- Sir Albert Noel Campbell Macklin (October 28, 1886 - November 10, 1946) an Australian-born British hockey player who went on to become an innovative car manufacturer and boat designer. He won a gold medal with the British national team at the 1910 European Championship.

Although Herbert Rossoff believed that making it a dream undermined the story, Pabst did not take his opinion into consideration. Russell based the character of Miles O'Brien on Macklin.
