Text
  • Anarchist and proponent of birth control and draft obstruction, Emma Goldman was born in Lithuania and raised in Russia. At 17 she moved to the United States, where she soon became involved with anarchists. Arrested several times for inciting riots, she was convicted of interfering with US preparations for World War I and sent to prison. Deported in 1919, she went to Russia but disapproved of the Soviet regime and moved on to England and later Canada. Late in life, she took an active role in the Spanish Civil War. Her role in events on Mars is clouded in mystery.

She played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the 20th Century. Goldman was probably well meaning but she was sometimes unrealistic. No communist system has ever been successful long term and all had to be enforced through a dictatorship. No anarchist society has ever been achieved. Goldman's support of other issues like Birth control and women's equality was more reasonable.

She was lionized as an iconic "rebel woman" feminist by admirers, and derided as an advocate of politically motivated murder and violent revolution by her critics. Goldman played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in the United States and Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. In particular she incorporated gender politics into anarchism which, if at all, had only been hinted at by earlier anarchists. She immigrated to the United States at the age of seventeen and was later deported to Russia, where she witnessed the results of the Russian Revolution. She spent a number of years in England and in Southern France where she wrote her autobiography, Living My Life, and other works, before taking part in the Spanish Civil War in 1936 as the English language representative in London of the CNT-FAI.

Aftwerwards, she came into conflict with the law regularly. It is unknown why she was in the capsule when it was launched by sabotage, but once on Mars, she quickly fell to the lies of Raxachk speaking through Rasputin. The Avatar found her in Argyre in Martian Dreams, where she proved herself to be totally convinced of Raxachk's ideas... at least, until the point when Raxachk, after the Avatar had cornered him, killed everyone else and fled Rasputin's body, leaving a disturbed Goldman behind. Back on Earth, Goldman would continue her anarchist cause, until being arrested in 1917 for trying to hinder the draft for World War I. In 1919 she was expelled back to the USSR. While this expulsion was not official, she was a person non grata in 1925, when she left the USSR. She traveled extensively and wrote several books, before dying in 1940.
