The Fearless was Michael Owens's first assignment out of Starfleet Academy. He became flight controller in 2356 at which time the starship and its crew had garnered a reputation as being one of the best in the fleet. A posting on the Fearless was considered a great honor and a guarantee to be part of great discoveries. In 2361 Fearless discovered the planet Tenaria during a deep space survey mission. Lieutenant Owens was chosen to stay behind to cultivate relations with the cordial Tenarians. (The Star Eagle Adventures) Richard D. James was assigned to Fearless as the lead flight controller in 2362. He would transfer off of Fearless to the USS Venture in 2366. James would eventually be transferred back to Fearless as a lieutenant commander and Chief Operations Officer in 2370. (Star Trek: The Quarterdeck Breed: "The Sacrifice of Agamemnon") Fearless would eventually return to Federation space and receive a warp drive upgrade in 2364. (TNG: "Where No One Has Gone Before") Fearless ferried a group of entertainers from Earth to Starbase 6 on Stardate 43398 (2366), where they would eventually transfer to USS Farragut. (Star Trek: Full Speed Ahead: "Eight The Hard Way" ) In 2367 the vessel conducted a planetary mapping mission in the Beta Mahoga system. (TNG: "Brothers") Fearless was commanded by Captain B. J. Simpson from at least 2370. Fearless served within Starfleet's Exploration Command. Executive Officer Lieutenant Commander Richard D. James transferred from the Fearless to serve as executive officer of the Apollo-class USS Agamemnon on Stardate 53441.4.
