Soviet occupation authorities began transferring administrative responsibility to German communist leaders in 1948, and the GDR began to function as a state on 7 October 1949. Until 1989, political power in the GDR was monopolized by the Soviet-backed communist party, the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). Other parties functioned within the SED-aligned National Front of Democratic Germany. The Stasi security force was used to repress dissent.

The GDR claimed Berlin (effectively limited to East Berlin) as its capital. The USSR recognized this claim, but NATO did not, asserting that neither German government had ever been allowed to retake administrative authority over Berlin from the Allied occupation. The GDR was a one party state, ruled by the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, and governed largely on the Stalinist model, with carefully staged elections that were not open and free. In 1961, the government built the Berlin Wall, fortifying the country's western border. While East Germany's planned economy was the most successful economy in the Eastern Bloc, it was still far behind West Germany's. East Germany ceased to exist with the reunification of Germany 1990.

The United States responded by flying in and out of West Berlin with supplies, including food, fuel, clothes, etc. This continued for a year, until the USSR decided to stop because the blockade wasn't working. In Earth year 1961, East German and Soviet officials put up a wall between the western and eastern sector of Berlin, creating a wall that continues here to this day.
  • The German Democratic Republic (GDR; German: Deutsche Demokratische Republik, DDR; more commonly known in English as East Germany) was a self-declared socialist state (but often referred to in the West as a "communist state") in the Eastern Bloc created in the Soviet Zone of occupied Germany and the Soviet sector of occupied Berlin. The German Democratic Republic existed from 7 October 1949 until 3 October 1990, when its re-established states acceded to the adjacent Federal Republic of Germany, thus producing the current form of the state of Germany. In 1955, the Soviet Union declared that the Republic was fully sovereign. However, Soviet occupation troops remained in GDR territory, based on the four-power Potsdam Agreement, while British, Canadian, French and American forces remained in the Federal Republic of Germany in the West. Berlin, completely surrounded by GDR territory, was similarly divided with British, French and U.S. garrisons in West Berlin and Soviet forces in East Berlin. Berlin in particular became the focal point of Cold War tensions. East Germany was a member of the Warsaw Pact and a close ally of the Soviet Union. Following the initial opening of sections of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, new elections were held on 18 March 1990, and the governing party, the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, lost its majority in the Volkskammer (the East German parliament) soon after. On 23 August, the Volkskammer decided that the Republic would recreate the five pre-war states (which had been dissolved in 1952), which would join the Federal Republic of Germany on 3 October 1990. As a result of the reunification on that date, the German Democratic Republic ceased to exist.

East Germany does not allow any form of government protests. Its armed police forces work quickly at "dissolving" any and all government protests. It's borders are closed to all forms of immigration. Free speech is considered taboo in East Germany. The government of East Germany has no compassion for other people of the world and does not contribute to foreign aid. The government of East Germany will trade with any other country regardless of ethical consequences.

The team competed in many international competitions, including several in which they competed with the top teams for medals, but managed to win only the European Championship bronze medal in 1966. The only time they competed in the Olympics was in Grenoble in 1968. They scored 13 goals in 7 games, but didn't manage to win any games leaving them with no points in the standings. From that on the team refused to participate in Olympic hockey, but participated in other tournaments. The team folded in 1990 just before the German reunification. 1. * First Game: East Germany 3-8 Poland January 28, 1951 2. * Biggest Win: East Germany 20-0 France March 12, 1980 3. * Biggest Loss: Czechoslovakia 25-2 East Germany October 17, 1951 In 1951 the Oberliga started with 7 teams : Einheit Berliner Bär, VOPO Berlin, Wismut Frankenhausen, Vorwärts Crimmitschau, BSG Chemie Weißwasser, Einheit Dresden and Fortschritt Apolda. In 1969-70 The GDR finished 5th in the World Championship Pool A. East German politicians decided that ice hockey was no longer 'worthy of being supported' as the teams did not get enough medals in their international competitions. The Oberliga was reduced to the two teams : Dynamo Berlin and Dynamo Weißwasser. All other clubs continued as amateurs. All artificial ice rinks were reserved for figure skating and speed skating.

Other parties functioned within the SED-aligned National Front of Democratic Germany. The Stasi security force was used to repress dissent. The economy was centrally planned, and predominantly state owned. Its population declined from more than 18 million in 1950 to 16 million in 1990. A subsidy system was used to keep down the prices of a large range of basic goods and services. Although the GDR had to pay substantial war reparations to the USSR, it became the richest economy in the Eastern Bloc. Nonetheless it did not match the economic growth of West Germany. Emigration to the West was a significant problem — as many of the emigrants were young well-educated people, it further weakened the state economically. The government tried to stop people leaving by fortifying its western borders and in 1961 by establishing the Berlin Wall. Several hundred people were killed by border guards. In 1989, a peaceful revolution in the GDR led to the destruction of the Berlin Wall and emergence of a government committed to liberalization. The following year, free elections were held, and international negotiations led to the signing of the Final Settlement treaty on the status and borders of Germany. The GDR was dissolved and Germany was reunited on 3 October 1990.
