  • During the ice age, it formed the alps which were today, though there were celts and germanics here later on, the metallurgy was arrived in northern Europe about 3000 BCE. About 46 BCE or so, the southern part was owned by the Romans and later they decline and became barbaric again, they became christian about later after the barbaric kingdoms sacked Rome itself.
  • Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. The Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995 have altered the meaning of this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the EU Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. In January 2009, Austria assumed a nonpermanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2009-10 term.

The Danish flag, said to be the oldest national flag "in continuous use", is at least a century younger, if you discount the legends of it being used in 1219, because the earliest recorded use of it was in the 1300s. Beyond their immediate borders, there are other matters for the Hapsburgs to consider. The Spanish branch of the family is now close to extinction, as Charles II has failed to produce an heir, among his other problems. Perhaps Spain should remain a part of Hapsburg domains, but this might lead to confrontation with France. And then, of course, there are the pan-Slavic, Christian Orthodox ambitions of the Russian Tsar to consider…

  • Called Petersfriedhof in German it is the oldest graveyard in the city. It is an operating cemetery and is a worthy attraction in the city. It's quite beautiful and the grave markers are very decorative. They are usually wrought iron along with the gates. Many residents of the city use the cemetery as a short cut when it's open. Many notable members of Salzburg society are buried there. Including Mozart's sister Nannerl and the younger brother of Joseph Hayden. The sides are enclosed with family crypts, which was the inspiration for the cemetery scene in The Sound of Music. The catacombs are above the cemetery carved into the Monschberg. There are no graves there, so the name is a misnomer. There is a small fee to enter the catacombs, but the walk is nice, the view is great and the small rooms are wonderful for contemplation.

Whether Austria was a Nazi conquest or willing Reichsgau is a sore issue, especially given Adolf Hitler was technically an Austrian (although admittedly he never liked Austria that much, especially not the multicultural empire). There is still a certain amount of denial going on about it. After the war, the country was divided like Germany into zones, but the British, US, French and Soviet armies all agreed in 1955 to leave if the newly-reconstituted Austrian Republic swore to remain neutral. Following the end of the Cold War, Austria joined the European Union in 1995. Austria today Austria is most famous for its mountains, the western part of the country being Alpine. Curiously enough, many younger Austrians in rural areas go back to wearing lederhosen when going out drinking. The reason? They are durable and it is completely accepted if you smear your dirty hands all over them. Yet, one should not forget the feud that is going on between southern Germany (Especially Bavaria) and eastern Austria. Well yes, it is usually a rather mild-mannered feud (shining through mainly in sports and other competitions)... but its origins can be traced as far back as the Thirty Years War. It's a Long Story. The long and short of it is that neither side likes it to be compared to its counterpart. Indeed, people are more likely to know its aristocratic personification than those movies. * Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart * Visitors anywhere in Austria, but particularly in Salzburg, can hardly move for racks of Mozartkugeln, a chocolate and marzipan confection bearing his picture. * Note that unlike Hitler (see below), Mozart was not an real Austrian. His hometown Salzburg was annexed in 1805, years after his death in 1791 and he never saw himself as an Austrian, either. It did not stop the present-day Austrians claiming him as an Austrian. * He didn't like Salzburg all that much, either, much like other famous "sons" of the town. * The Mozart family originated from Swabia and Leopold, Wolfgang's father, was born in Augsburg (then a Free City, now part of Bavaria). * Adolf Hitler * Austrians are less proud of their other most known son.
