  • Iguanodon is an creature found in Prehistoric Plateau. This creature is not attackable but is very friendly and will actually give you advice and help keep you safe.
  • Iguanodon was a large herbivore dinosaur from Europe. It was around 10-11m (Roughly 30ft) long and it owned five inches long thumbnails. Iguanodon lived in the Cretaceous era. The Iguanodon is included in the Dinosaur Digs expansion pack for Zoo Tycoon. It has not been included officially in Zoo Tycoon 2, but is available in the user-made expansions Cretaceous Calamity and Reptile Rage.
  • Iguanodon (meaning "Iguana tooth") is a genus of ornithopod dinosaur that lived roughly halfway between the first of the swift bipedal hypsilophodontids and the ornithopods' culmination in the duck-billed dinosaurs. Many species of Iguanodon have been named, dating from the Kimmeridgian age of the Late Jurassic Period to the Cenomanian age of the Late Cretaceous Period from Asia, Europe, and North America. However, research in the first decade of the 2000s suggests that there is only one well-substantiated species: I. bernissartensis, that lived from the Barremian to the early Aptian (Early Cretaceous) in Europe, between about 130 and 120 million years ago. Iguanodon's most distinctive features were its large thumb spikes, which were possibly used for defence against predators.
  • When the first Iguanodon skeleton was discovered it 1822, was believed to walk much like an iguana, on all four legs. Its thumb spike was believed to be a horn on its head (only one thumb spike was found). At one point it was also thought to have lived in trees, but this has been long since proven completly wrong.
  • Iguanodon was a plant-eating dinosaur that had a conical spike on each thumb. This 30-foot-long dinosaur lived during the early Cretaceous period, about 135 to 125 million years ago. Iguanodon was a dinosaur that had a horny, toothless beak and tightly-packed cheek teeth. On each hand, Iguanodon had four fingers plus a conical thumb spike on each hand (that was perpendicular to the other fingers). The thumb spikes may have been used for defense or in obtaining food; it ranged from 2 to 6 inches long. Iguanodon had a flat, stiff tail and three-toed hind feet with hoof-like claws. Its legs were much larger than its arms.
  • Iguanodon (meaning "Iguana tooth") is the name given to a genus of ornithopod dinosaurs, which lived roughly halfway between the early hypsilophodontids and their ultimate culmination in the duck-billed dinosaurs. They lived between 120 to 140 million years ago, in the Barremian to Valanginian ages of the Early Cretaceous Period, although one dubious species is from the Late Jurassic. Iguanodon's most distinctive feature was a large 'thumb spike', probably used for defense against predators.Additional resource: Ceratopsian crest as acoustic amplifier can be found in published work:

Wyprzedził go megalozaur. Razem z tym teropodem i z hileozaurem użyto go do stworzenia definicji dinozaurów.

Its thumb spike was believed to be a horn on its head (only one thumb spike was found). At one point it was also thought to have lived in trees, but this has been long since proven completly wrong. One of the more notable characteristics of the Iguanodon species is its "thumbs". Instead of a thumb it had a large spike that paleontologists believed Iguanodons used for defensive purposes, but could have also been used for getting food. The "pinky" finger of an Iguanodon is believed to have acted as its thumb. Palentologists belive that Iguanadon may have traveled in herds. In large herds of Iguanodons other dinosaurs, mainly the ankylosaur family, would join in the migrations to gain protection to the herd as a whole. It was mostly quadropedic, but could have stood up on its hind legs to reach tall plants or to run away quickly. They didn't have too flat of bills or like their hadrosaur descendents, but still had many teeth within its cheeked jaws and could chew tough food pretty easily. Iguanodon was perhaps the most successful dinosaur species, with it and its relatives being found on nearly every continent.

Its legs were much larger than its arms. Iguanodon averaged about 30 feet long (9.3 m), 16 feet tall (5 m), 9 ft (2.7 m) tall at the hips, and may have weighed 4 to 5 tons.Iguanodon lived in the early Cretaceous period, about 135-125 million years ago, toward the end of the Mesozoic. The supercontinent Pangaea was breaking up at this time, but Iguanodon managed to spread to all the continents except Antarctica. Among the contemporaries of Iguanodon were Baryonyx, Brachiosaurus, and Hypsilophodon. Iguanodon was probably a herding animal, as evidenced by bonebed discoveries in Belgium. In these bonebeds, dozens of Iguanodon fossils were found together, suggesting that they congregated during their lives. Iguanodon was an herbivore, a plant eater. It probably nipped cycads and other prehistoric plants with its tough, toothed beak. It had no teeth in the front of its mouth, but had strong teeth (about 2 inches long) in the side of its jaw (cheek teeth) which it used to grind up tough plant material.Iguanodon was an ornithopod, whose intelligence (as measured by its relative brain to body weight, or EQ) was midway among the dinosaurs.Iguanodon could run on two legs or walk on four; it was a relatively fast dinosaur. British paleontologist David Norman showed that some mature Iguanodons were quadrupedal. Iguanodon may have travelled as fast as 15-20 km/hr (according to D. Fastovsky and D. Weishampel in "The Evolution and Extinction of the Dinosaurs"). Dinosaur speeds are estimated using their morphology (characteristics like leg length and estimated body mass) and fossilized trackways. Iguanodon was named by Gideon A. Mantell in 1825; its teeth and a few bones were found in 1822 (perhaps by Gideon Mantell's wife, Mrs Mary Mantell) in Sussex, (southern) England. Mantell recognized the similarity between Iguanodon's tooth and that of the modern iguana, except the Iguanodon's was much larger. Iguanodon was the second dinosaur fossil named, and Mantell named it Iguanodon, meaning "iguana tooth." Hundreds of Iguanodon fossils have been found around the world, especially in Belgium, England, Germany, North Africa, and the USA. The type species, I. bernissartensis , was named by Boulenger and van Beneden in 1881. Iguanodon belonged to the: * Kingdom Animalia (animals) * Phylum Chordata (having a hollow nerve chord ending in a brain) * Class Archosauria (diapsids with socket-set teeth, etc.) * Order Ornithischia - bird-hipped, herbivorous dinosaurs * Suborder Ornithopoda - bird-footed, beaked, bipedal, herbivorous dinosaurs * Family Iguanodontidae - the family of large, bipedal, long-toed herbivores with thumb spikes, that included Ouranosaurus, Probactrosaurus, and others. * Genus Iguanodon * species: The type species is I. anglicus. Other Iguanodon species include: I. atherfieldensis, I. bernissartensis, I. dawsoni, I. fittoni, I. hoggi, I. lakotaensis, and I. ottingeri. These species differ in size and snout shape. There are another 17 dubious species (they are probably other dinosaurs, but were originally placed in the genus Iguanodon). * A brief Iguanodon fact sheet - or a printable fact sheet. * An Iguanodon coloring/information page to print. * Print out a K-3 level Iguanodon page to color! * An Iguanodon quiz * A first-grade level Iguanodon subtraction activity print-out. Together with Megalosaurus and Hylaeosaurus, it was one of the three genera originally used to define Dinosauria. A large, bulky herbivore, Iguanodon is a member of Iguanodontia, along with the duck-billed hadrosaurs. The taxonomy of this genus continues to be a topic of study as new species are named or long-standing ones reassigned to other genera. Scientific understanding of Iguanodon has evolved over time as new information has been obtained from the fossils. The numerous specimens of this genus, including nearly complete skeletons from two well-known bonebeds, have allowed researchers to make informed hypotheses regarding many aspects of the living animal, including feeding, movement, and social behavior. As one of the first scientifically well-known dinosaurs, Iguanodon has occupied a small but notable place in the public's perception of dinosaurs, its artistic representation changing significantly in response to new interpretations of its remains.
