  • A federation is a political entity characterized by a union of partially self-governing states or regions under a central federal government.
  • A "Federation" is a union (not to be mistaken with The Union) comprised of a number of partially self-governing states or regions united by a central ("federal") government. In a federation, the self-governing status of the component states are typically constitutionally entrenched and may not be altered by a unilateral decision of the central government. A prime example would be the early Human "United States of America".

  • A federation is a group of countries that have agreed to cooperate in defence related matters. Generally they share military resources and help each other in case of war. The assistance given during war is limited to the participation of the air force in defending a member country. Members of federations should realize that they can lose many of their aircraft during such military support operations and use thousands of missiles at a large cost. There are rules that govern the federations and all members must agree. Some issues are decided by voting. Any user can start a new federation and invite friends to join. Joining federations is always by invitation.
  • In general, three types of global government structures, short of a unified world state, are possible: alliance, confederation and federation. A federation is formed when two or more states or nations permanently transfer to the central government control over essentially common interests, such as defense, commerce, and currency, with the federating nations, or their people, retaining all other powers. In a federation the government generally levies its own taxes, and the citizens usually have direct representation in the federal government. Federal enforcement agencies can operate directly on individuals in all matters under federal jurisdiction.

  • The United Federation of Planets, (also known as the UFP or "The Federation") is a fictional interplanetary state depicted in the Star Trek television series and motion pictures. In those episodes and films, the Federation is described as an interstellar federal state with (as of 2373) more than 150 member planets and thousands of colonies spread across 8,000 light years of the Milky Way Galaxy, and taking the form of a liberal democracy and constitutional republic.[1] The Federation also maintains its own military and exploratory agency, Starfleet. The United Federation of Planets has existed as part of the Star Trek universe since the first season of the original series. The Federation is described as stressing, at least nominally, the values of universal liberty, equality, justice, peace, and cooperation.[2] The legislature of the Federation Council is depicted as being headquartered in a building located in San Francisco.[3] Several other bodies of the Federation have been depicted. There is an executive branch headed by a Federation President,[4] who keeps offices in the Place de la Concorde, Paris. There is a judiciary branch as well, the highest court of which is the Federation Supreme Court.[5] The Federation's scientific, diplomatic and defensive/military arm is Starfleet, depicted as being headquartered at the Presidio in San Francisco. The Federation is described as having come into military conflict at various times with the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire, the Tholian Assembly, the Cardassian Union, the Tzenkethi, the Borg Collective, the Dominion, and the Breen Confederacy. The Federation has also been in conflict with the Ferengi Alliance, the Sheliak Corporate, and the Talarian Republic, although the show's creators have never made it explicit as to whether these disputes amounted to formal states of war.

In a federation the government generally levies its own taxes, and the citizens usually have direct representation in the federal government. Federal enforcement agencies can operate directly on individuals in all matters under federal jurisdiction. Nations organized under a federal structure depart from the confederate realm of unlimited though vague commitments as to future collaboration, and enter into specific contractual relationship. A redivision of authority takes place. The national governments transfer limited but specific powers and responsibilities to the federal authority, and enforcement in the federal sphere operates directly on individuals in the same way that national and local laws operate within their respective fields independently of one another. The individual is brought into direct relationship with the new governmental structure not only because its laws operate directly on him -- not indirectly through national governments -- but because the duties and responsibilities he assumes towards the new authority, such as direct election of representatives to the legislative branch, the payment of taxes, and observance of world laws, involve a constant relationship of benefits and obligations to which he is already accustomed locally and nationally.

Usually federations are setup by groups of players who know each other or met by playing. Up to 25 countries can be members of a single federation. You can start a new federation or join an existing one. Click on "Federations" in the navigation bar or on the menu at the top of the page.

During the course of a single game, depending on what storyline the player chooses, the Federation either gains control of the Polarans and Aurorans, is reformed by the Rebellion or Vell-os, or is effectively eliminated as a unit by the Polarans (Although you can choose to destroy the Aurorans instead).
