Schmaltz was a member of the gold medal winning USA team at the 2010 World Junior A Challenge. Schmaltz was drafted 25th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. His brother Nick, was selected 20th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2014 NHL Draft.
