But Watson ran much better in the race, falling a number of laps down but driving to a solid 14th place finish. It did not go so well for Watson when he returned to Macon in 1971. Starting 30th in the field of thirty-two, Watson suffered from an oil leak early in the race and finished a disappointing 31st.
