abstract
  • The Mission-class was a Federation class II courier starship in Starfleet service in the 23rd century, entering service on reference stardate 1/9101. A mark II uprated configuration was introduced on reference stardate 1/9112. The Mission was created in the early 23rd century as a courier spaceframe design created for modification into a research vessel or transport. Mission-class vessels with low priority missions could be commanded by an ensign with a complement of eight crewmen, with room for up to five more passengers, specialists or officers. Additionally, the basic Mission-class vessel could carry 100 standard cargo units of freight, and the mark II vessels were uprated to carry 150 cargo units. The vessels weighed 6,000 metric tons unloaded, measured 31.5 meters in length, 24.8 meters in width and 12.5 meters in height. The Mission had one standard (3-person) personnel transporter stages and a single cargo transporter. The Mission warp engines were FWA-1 type, rated to cruise at warp factor 7.5 and max out at warp factor 9. The Mission impulse engines were of the FIA type. The Mission weapons consisted of a single forward-facing phaser bank, and defenses were by FSC model deflector shields. Considered by many to be a highly versatile ship, the Mission design was constructed by the dozen, with (by the late 23rd century) over 306 mark I vessels and over 372 mark II vessels having been built, with many sold into private service and ownership. The courier vessels of this type commissioned into Starfleet were usually named after famous diplomats of history, with registry numbers generally falling in the range between NCC-13500 to NCC-13999. Starfleet's Mission-class research vessels were named after scientists and had registries in the range of NCC-16600 to NCC-16999, and transports were named after military navy personnel of history and were generally registered in the range of NCC-61000 to NCC-61399. The many Mission-class vessels that eventually came to be held in civilian ownership or corporate service were frequently modified with new technology that was not included in the original design.
