He was also a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. After the war Wilhelm Ahrens joined the Bundeswehr and retired in 1970.
