Scharf turned pro with the Jersey Devils in 1971-72. In 1972-73 Scharf jumped to the newly-formed World Hockey Association (WHA) and signed with the New York Raiders. He spent five seasons in the WHA, scoring 16 goals and 20 assists in 238 games and getting 343 penalty minutes. He retired in 1977.
