Hanna started out in junior with the hometown Sydney Steel Kings and then switched to the Trois Rivieres Flambeaux. Turnng pro in 1955, he played for three years in the minors as the property of the Montreal Canadiens. They traded him in 1957 to the New York Rangers.

He also played 66 games in the World Hockey Association (WHA) with the Cleveland Crusaders. Hanna started out in junior with the hometown Sydney Steel Kings and then switched to the Trois Rivieres Flambeaux. Turnng pro in 1955, he played for three years in the minors as the property of the Montreal Canadiens. They traded him in 1957 to the New York Rangers. Starting in 1958-59, Hanna played three years as a regular with the New York Rangers. In 1961, he was traded for Albert Langlois to the Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens brought him up for six games in 1963-64. Aside from that he played in 15 games for the Philadelphia Flyers in 1967-68 after they picked him up in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft. He played until 1975, mostly in the minors. He did play the 1972-73 season with the Cleveland Crusaders of the World Hockey Association. Hanna was the player-coach of the Jacksonville Barons in 1973-74. In 1974-75 he was the head coach of the Syracuse Eagles and then the Cleveland Crusaders. Hanna then coached the Tidewater Sharks in 1975-76 and the Springfield Indians in 1976-77. His last coaching job was with the North Iowa Huskies in 1986-87. In 198 NHL games he scored 6 goals and 26 assists.
