Außerdem wurden bei Restaurationen zum Teil sogar Rätsel gelöst, und Mysterien aufzuklären hatte ich schon von Kindheit an vergöttert. All diese Geschichten - Legende oder Wahrheit. Mir war egal, worum es ging - Gräber, alte Schlösser oder verschollene Gemälde - hauptsache geheimnisvoll.

Gargoyles are known to hate freedom, supressing democracy in their "clans" in favor of tyrannical leaders. Goliath, named after the Biblical bully, is currently the despot of the Manhattan Clan, and he has been known to force his gargoyle subjects to fight American hero David Xanatos. While humans have managed to drive the down the population of gargoyles over the centuries, the Manhattan Clan has infiltrated the greatest bastion of humanity, America, to plague us all under their queen's command. But, this time they have human allies. Traitors such as the People For Interspecies Tolerance, and even worse, Elisa Maza who has taken it upon herself to couple with Goliath. There's little doubt people such as Eliza Maza and P.I.T. members are encouraging human-gargoyle relations in order to undermine humans' superior genetics through interspecies breeding. Thankfully, a new group of concerned citizens have formed a militia called the Quarrymen to oppose these creatures at every turn.

Ich holte mir nur meinen Rucksack von der Rückbank, dann ließ ich das Auto hinter mir zurück. Mein Vater rief mir noch eine kurze Verabschiedung nach, aber ich war schon viel zu vertieft darin, die Kirche zu begutachten. Alt sah sie zumindest aus, stellte ich fest. Aber sie sah eben auch wie jede andere alte Kirche in der Gegend aus und daher entschied ich mich dafür, erst einmal nach meinem Onkel zu schauen, der sich ja irgendwo hier herumtreiben musste. Das Rufen brachte mir äußerst wenig, denn wie sich bald herausstellte, war das Gelände größer als erwartet. Und mittlerweile war mir auch der Unterschied zu anderen Kirchen aufgefallen: Überall standen diese merkwürdigen Statuen herum - Gargoyles hießen sie. Furchterregende Kreaturen mit Reißzähnen am Oberkiefer und Flügeln mit Krallen am Ende - so hockten sie da auf ihren Sockeln und starrten einen mit lebensechten Augen an. Selbst ihre Füße waren mit scharfen Krallen besetzt und so wunderte es mich erst recht, warum eine Kirche, die ja nunmal ein Ort Gottes war, solche Monster aus Stein beherbergte. Doch die Gargoyles waren da noch mein kleinstes Problem, also versuchte ich mich einfach weiter auf mein Vorhaben - das Ausfindig machen meines Onkels - zu konzentrieren. Es war auf eine absurde Art und Weise eigenartig, ganz alleine in der Kapelle zu stehen, besonders, wenn ein leises Knarzen hinter einem ertönte, sobald die hölzerne Tür zufiel. "Hallo?", probierte ich es mit einem Ruf, doch es kam nur das Echo zurück, das von den Wänden der Kapelle in alle Richtungen hallte. Gerade als ich mich wieder zum Gehen wandte, ertönte jedoch ein Scheppern hinter mir. Zu meiner Erleichterung war es nur mein Onkel, der eine leere Farbdose umgeworfen hatte. "Na, wenn das nicht meine Lieblingsnichte ist!", rief er aus, als ich auf ihn zukam. "Hallo, Onkel Shawn.", begrüßte ich ihn so höflich es ging. Ich war noch nie sehr gut darin gewesen, mit Erwachsenen zu sprechen. Und obwohl ich meinen Onkel gut kannte, fiel mir ein anständiges Gespräch teilweise schwer. "Bist du bereit für deine erste Schicht als Restaurator? Na, am Besten zeige ich dir erst einmal alles!", fuhr mein Onkel fort, ohne mich wirklich antworten zu lassen. Also folgte ich ihm einfach schweigend, bis wir ein kleines Büro hinter einer Seitentür betraten. Überall auf dem Boden lagen verstreut Dokumente und Bücher herum. "Das hier ist mein derzeitiger Arbeitsplatz, der mir zur Verfügung gestellt worden ist." Als er meinen Blick über die Unordnung schweifen sah, huschte kurz ein Lächeln über seine Lippen. "Und im Moment ist es leider auch ein bisschen chaotisch." Dann führte er mich auch schon wieder in die Kapelle zurück, aus der wir gekommen waren. Mein Blick fiel wieder auf eine dieser schrecklichen Statuen - sie stand auf einem Sockel am Altar und zeigte mit ihrer krallenversehenen Hand auf die Reihen von Bänken, so als wolle sie die Menschen, die bei Gottesdiensten dort saßen, bedrohen. Der Anblick dieser Kreatur jagte mir einen Schauer über den Rücken, und so war ich erleichtert, von meinem Onkel aus der Kapelle und in ein kleineres Nebengebäude gebracht zu werden. Hier war ausnahmsweise keines von diesen Gargoyl-Abbildern aufgestellt worden, nur ein einfacher Jesus am Kreuz schmückte den Saal. Schon kurz nach dem Betreten dieses Gebäudes hatte ich bemerkt, dass wir nicht alleine waren. Scheppernde Geräusche drangen an mein Ohr und ein undefinierbarer Schatten tanzte die Wände entlang. Ehe ich meinem Onkel Bescheid sagen, geschweige denn realisieren konnte, zu wem dieser Schatten gehörte, verschwand er auch schon wieder. Dabei erkannte ich allerdings noch, dass er unmöglich von einem Menschen stammen konnte: Die Konturen, die ich von dem etwas, das wohl für diese Erscheinungen verantwortlich war, erfasst hatte, deuteten darauf hin, dass diese Person einige Meter über dem Boden hätte schweben müssen. Mein Onkel schien von der ganzen Sache nichts mitbekommen zu haben. Er sprach mich weder darauf an, noch wirkte er in irgendeiner Weise alarmiert. Ich überlegte kurz, ob ich es ihm erzählen sollte, aber dann schlug ich mir diesen Gedanken wieder aus dem Kopf. Am Ende würde über mich sowieso nur gelacht werden - oder aber es würde behauptet werden, dass ich mir alles nur eingebildet hätte. Vielleicht hatte ich das ja auch wirklich... Es wäre nicht das erste Mal gewesen, dass meine Fantasie mit mir durchging. Nach diesem kleinen Schockmoment beruhigte ich mich langsam wieder und wandte mich vorsichtig meinem Onkel zu. Der sah sich mittlerweile nachdenklich um, so als würde er jemanden suchen. Tatsächlich bewahrheitete sich meine Vorahnung und er rief nach einer anderen Person - einem gewissen Devin. Ich überlegte kurz, ob ich diesen Devin vielleicht sogar kannte, aber der Name sagte mir rein gar nichts. Auf den Ruf meines Onkels hin drangen einige raschelnde Geräusche aus einem anderen Teil des Saales. Schritte ertönten und kurz darauf erschien ein junger Mann hinter der kleinen Orgel, die in diesem Gebäude Platz gefunden hatte. Er schien nur einige Jahre älter als ich zu sein, hatte blonde, strubbelige Haare und trug verschmutzte Arbeitskleidung. Obwohl er einfach nur stumm dastand und bisher noch nichts getan hatte, war mir dieser Devin sofort unsympathisch. Wahrscheinlich lag es an seinem gelangweilten Gesichtsausdruck, mit dem er zu mir und meinem Onkel herüber sah... Mein Onkel hatte mir inzwischen einen Arm um die Schulter gelegt und führte mich nun zu der Orgel nach vorne, wo sein Helfer immer noch mit belangloser Miene ausharrte. "Devin," hob er mit einem fast stolzen Lächeln an, "das hier ist meine Nichte. Sie wird uns in den nächsten zwei Wochen etwas unter die Arme greifen." Ich nickte dem jungen Mann kurz zu und brachte ein unsicheres "Hi..." heraus. Devin schien sich nicht sonderlich für mich zu interessieren und erwiderte meine Geste nur stumm, während seine merkwürdig leeren Augen durch mich hindurchstarrten, als befände er sich gerade gedanklich in einer Parallelwelt. Mir lief eine Gänsehaut über den Rücken und ich wandte meinen Blick von ihm ab. Genauer wollte ich diesen Devin lieber nicht kennenlernen. Viel Zeit blieb mir dazu aber sowieso nicht, denn mein Onkel war bereits dabei, mir den - laut ihm - "schönsten Platz des gesamten Geländes" zu zeigen. Dafür mussten wir den kleinen Friedhof am Rande der Kapelle überqueren und noch ein Stück näher an den Waldrand, der sich dahinter befand. Hier war ein einzelner, großer Grabstein aufgestellt, auf dessen Vorderseite die Worte "Gestorben als Opfer der Teufelsepidemie 1853" eingemeißelt waren. Hinter diesem Grabstein aber kam erst die wahre Verzierung dieses Grabes zum Vorschein. Auf einem Sockel thronte eine von diesen grässlichen Statuen - diesmal jedoch gab es einen entscheidenden Unterschied: Es waren zwei Figuren, die eng beieinander standen. Eine von ihnen war eine Frau mit vor Angst verzerrtem Gesicht, die Hände erschrocken an den Mund gepresst. Das andere Bildnis verkörperte einen Gargoyle mit aufgerissenem Maul und die Klauen nach der Frau ausgestreckt. "Eine äußerst beeindruckende Statue, nicht wahr?" Mein Onkel riss mich mit seinen Worten aus den Gedanken. Verwundert sah ich ihn an. Fand er diese Darstellung etwa auch noch gut? "Sie stammt aus der Zeit der Teufelsepidemie. Als diese hier im Dorf um sich griff, gab es viele Tote. Die Krankheit war dafür bekannt, selbst die kleinsten Wunden, die die Opfer sich zuzogen, innerhalb kürzester Zeit verfaulen zu lassen. Außerdem kam es häufiger vor, dass Kranke Körperteile verloren, vergleichbar mit Lepra. Symbolisch wurde die Teufelsepidemie meist als solches Monster dargestellt, wie du hier eines sehen kannst." Mir stellte sich die Nackenhaare bei dieser Geschichte auf. Der Gedanke an Menschen, denen Körperteile aufgrund dieser Krankheit abfielen, war einfach nur abstoßend... Nichts desto trotz zwang ich mich dazu, meinem Onkel zurück zur Kirche zu folgen. Er wollte mit seiner Arbeit fortfahren und mir währenddessen noch ein paar wichtige Dinge beibringen. Als wir uns jedoch gerade dort eingefunden hatten, stieß mein Onkel einen kurzen Fluch aus. "Was ist?", fragte ich alarmiert. Er schüttelte verärgert den Kopf. "Eigentlich wollte ich mir noch den Code des Grabsteins aufschreiben! Wir nummerieren alle Artefakte, die wir restaurieren, um immer genau zu wissen, woran wir noch arbeiten müssen. Aber ich habe mir die Nummer dieses Grabsteins noch nicht notiert. Sie steht nur auf dem Nummernkärtchen, das wir am Grabstein selbst befestigt haben." Mein Onkel sah mich bittend an und ich ahnte schon, was er von mir wollte. Ein Seufzen entfuhr mir."Du möchtest, dass ich zurück gehe und die Informationen des Nummernkärtchens für dich aufschreibe?" Er nickte lächelnd. Um ehrlich zu sein, hatte ich nicht gerade das Bedürfnis, noch einmal zu diesem Grabstein und dem makabren Denkmal zurückzukehren. Andererseits wollte ich meinen Onkel auch nicht abweisen. Und so stapfte ich kurz darauf den Pfad entlang, der zu der Statue führte. Auf diesem Wege konnte ich zumindest noch ein paar Fotos davon schießen - immerhin war ich in meinem Bekanntenkreis nicht die einzige, die sich für Historik interessierte. Und vielleicht wusste ja auch jemand, was es mit dieser Teufelsepidemie auf sich hatte. Als ich die Grabstätte erreichte, fand ich zunächst alles so vor, wie mein Onkel und ich es verlassen hatten. Deshalb hockte ich mich direkt vor das steinerne Monument und holte mein Handy aus der Hosentasche. Ich fotografierte sowohl die beschriftete Grabplatte, als auch die Statue, dann steckte ich es wieder zurück. Während ich mich langsam aufrichtete, meinte ich, aus dem Augenwinkel eine Bewegung wahrzunehmen. Doch bei genauerem Betrachten fiel mir keine Veränderung an der Statue auf. Ich zuckte ratlos mit den Schultern. Am Ende siegte meine Vernunft über meine zu lebhafte Fantasie. Es war Zeit, von diesen Hirngespinsten abzukommen. Ich nahm das Nummernkärtchen, das vor mir am Grabstein befestigt war zur Hand und begann, alles nötige auf einem losen Blatt Papier zu notieren. Immer wieder hatte ich das Gefühl, aus dem Augenwinkel etwas gesehen zu haben. Auch ein leises Knacken ertönte hier und da. Als ein besonders auffälliges Geräusch an mein Ohr drang, entschied ich mich dazu, für einen Moment aufzuschauen. Eigentlich hatte ich mich noch ein wenig umsehen wollen, aber sobald ich den Blick hob, bemerkte ich, dass etwas nicht stimmte. Die Statue vor mir hatte sich verändert. - In the days when the Immortals still roamed the lands freely and Lord Deori was still doing wondrous deeds of creation, Vagma came to Him and demanded that He be allowed to create something for the lands as well. Lord Deori, knowing the evil that lurked deeply in Vagma's heart, decided to allow him to create a race of beasts. Vagma left to begin His work. In the fullness of time, Vagma returned to Lord Deori to show Him His new creation. They were strong like the very rocks of the foundations of the earth and ranged in size from small to huge. "They are called Gargoyles, Lord Deori", Vagma told him. As the eons passed, the gargoyles became the guardians of the lands. Their great hearts were fierce for the care of the lands and its inhabitants and soon even the Immortals gave them care over their most prized beings and possessions. They loved to roam their mountain home of Wyrm Spine and let the sun warm their thick rocky skins. No race was more loved....or trusted. But Vagma had other plans for them. Unknown to Lord Deori, the gargoyles had been formed from the tainted mountain rock of Vagma's home. When He deemed the time was right, He went among them in disguised form and began to whisper words of discontent. The deeply buried taint began to take root and grow in some of the gargoyles, and soon the whisperings became murmurings and grumblings. One elder gargoyle, Slate by name, began to grow angry with what He percieved as the enslavement of his race. He listened to the whisperings of Vagma telling him he should be equal with the Gods themselves. As his arrogance grew, so too did the taint in his heart. He gathered all the others who had allowed this taint to fester and began having meetings to make plans to rise up in power against the Gods. Vagma and Takara came to Slate and told him they would help him with his plans if he helped them. Slate agreed and so the pact was made between them. Lord Deori in the meantime, unknowing what was going on in the deep mountains, grew more and more pleased with His creation and His children. He decided to gift his son Zir with the sole offspring of his Stallion, Minion Star. Minion Star was a beast of magic who had come from the stars themselves as did his son, Azyhier by name. Lord Zir loved the stallion Azynier with all the passionate nature within him. Fierce was his pride and joy in the mighty stallion and great was the love the stallion had for Zir. Vagma and Takara, the once beautiful Queen of Woodtop, plotted together to destroy Zir by destroying all that which he loved....including His very heart, for Zir loved Takara before she lost her heart to darkness and evil. Each year the Immortals gathered with Lord Deori to discuss how the lands were proceeding. The Immortals would all arrive and leave their mounts and belongings in the care of the loyal and loved gargoyles. It was at one of these gatherings that Vagma and Takara put their plan into action. Slate, who now called himself the King of the Gargoyles, arranged it so that only his own followers tended to Lord Zir's Stallion. Midway through the meeting, a scream suddenly rang out. A scream of agony and anger both. Lord Zir recognizing Azyhier's voice, jumped up and ran for the door only to find it blocked by thousands of enraged gargoyles with blood in their eyes and death in their hearts. The Immortals battled the gargoyles and they fell in piles, dead. Suddenly a scream raged from just outside the door and in ran Azyhier. He was bloodied and his skin hung in shreds while hundreds of gargoyles clung to him with fang and claw. He fought with hoof and teeth and they fell at his right and left, hundreds upon hundreds as he raced to guard his beloved friend and Master, Zir. In a rage of fury and unfettered bloodlust, Zir slew every single gargoyle he could find. When they were all dead, He knelt by the side of His fallen friend and wept as Azyhier died in His arms. He swore a blood vengeance on every gargoyle in the lands and raced out to track down Vagma and Takara and exact revenge on them as well for their heinous plot. Lord Deori, grieved at what had been done to his son and to his beloved creatures, also knew that punishment had to be dealt out, not only for their safety but for the safety of the other creatures of the lands. Speaking mighty words of power, he banished all the gargoyle race to the depths of Wyrm Spine Mountains and their self-proclaimed King, Slate, to an underground cavern for all time. He also took one of their greatest pleasures from them for the taking of Azyhier from Zir...He declared that they would nay ever be able to walk in the warm sun and feel its heat warm their skin. They would have only the cool of the night for their own and as the sun's rays first spread across the lands, they would treturn to the stone from which they came from. They would have only bare seconds as the sun they so loved rose, to see and feel its heat before the cold of stone overtook them again. So it would stand for all time and for all eternity. Some there were however who had not given themselves over to the taint and evil of their brethren. Deori gave unto them the care of the others of the lands during the nighttime hours. When you look up to a building, or wander the stone gardens of the druids and see the ugly visage of a gargoyle perched there gazing down at you...know that this was one who had remained true in their heart and who even to this day watch over Deori's creatures in the darkness of night.
- Gargoyles are living stone ornaments that can be seen throughout the land of Albion in Fable II. They have small, light grey faces with sparkling eyes, and are renowned and reviled among the people of Albion for their habit of mocking and insulting any and all passersby, including the Hero of Bowerstone. Their unique, heavily-accented Scottish banter is a dead giveaway as to their presence. The gargoyles will remain silent until the Hero learns the Aimed Ranged Attack. At this point, any gargoyles encountered will harass the Hero and can be shot with a ranged weapon. After shooting the first gargoyle, the Gargoyles quest is activated, and the Hero will receive the Gargoyle Map, which leads to the legendary Gargoyle's Trove beneath the bridge in Bowerstone Market. This lengthy quest involves destroying all fifty gargoyles in Albion, in exchange for periodic rewards (for every ten gargoyles destroyed), as well as a final reward, The Rammer, a legendary crossbow.

John Costanza did the lettering for the Gargoyles comics published by Marvel Comics and in the Disney Adventures magazine. Gordon Purcell did the pencil art for Gargoyles #6 for SLG Comics.
