Sein Sohn Henry Surtees stieg ebenfalls in den Rennsport ein. Am 19. Già dal primo mezzo di trasporto per bambini piccoli (il seggiolo della pappa) John dimostra di avere ottime capacità velocistiche, riuscendo a scappare dall'orribile pappa della madre, fatta di sterco di orsa e grano marcio ( i conquistatori non avevano lasciato niente agli indiani, ma questa è storia). Dopo aver conquistato abbastanza sulla prima ruota, battendo in continuazione sua madre che gli tentava di dare quella pappa orribile, John arriva in Moto gp dove senza gare spettacolari, senza vittorie, senza sorpassi e senza nemici conquista la bellezza di sette titoli sulle due ruote e se ne va soddisfatto, come viene confermato anche dalla Perfida e decide dopo aver conquistato le tre ruote di andare in Formula 1.
