  • In the 12th century, Ireland was conquered by the English, brutally enslaving the country and the Irish for the next 800 years. In the 1500s, the Church of England changed from Catholic to Protestant, (after King Henry VIII wanted a divorce to have a younger wife). The Irish people's refusal to convert caused discrimination against them by the English to double ten-fold. In the late 1840s, Ireland was plagued with a potato famine that lead to a million Irish people starving to death due to the anti-Catholic British regime refusing to help. 3,000,000 Irish fled abroad to escape starvation and tyranny, most of them coming to the United States, such as the Stabler family. Ireland has been beset by violence known as "The Troubles", a conflict between the Provisional Irish Republic Army against the British army and loyalist paramilitary groups, most notable the Ulster Volunteer Force. Peace was eventually declared in 1998 with the Belfast Agreement. The ceasefire left many IRA insurgents out of work, so they became mercenaries. One example of a former IRA man becoming a hit man was Liam Connors. The history of organized crime in the United States started with potato famine-refugee Irish immigrants in the early 1800s before the Italian Mafia or Russian Mafiya came into existence. Jack McCoy, an Irish American whose father was an Irish cop in Chicago, took his co-worker and lover Diana Hawthorne to Ireland in 1991. (L&O: "Trophy")
  • The island nation of Ireland was usually described as one of King Arthur's dominions. It is ruled over in many stories by King Anguish father of Isolde.
  • The canonical structure in Ireland, Europe, is such that you have the country first, the particular province next, then the county, the city if it exists, and lastly the town. However, the province is not usually used for postal or spoken reference.
  • Holding 100 million, this is its lowest, with its highest 145 million by 1845 before the Great Famine of Ireland.
  • Ireland is the third largest island in Europe. Politically, the Republic of Ireland covers five-sixths of the island, with Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, covering the remainder in the north-east. The island was Christianised from the 5th century onward. Following the Norman invasion in the 12th century, England claimed sovereignty over Ireland. However, English rule did not extend over the whole island until the 16th–17th century Tudor conquest. This led to colonization of Ireland by settlers from Britain. In the 1690s, a system of Protestant English rule was designed to materially disadvantage the Catholic majority and Protestant dissenters, and was extended during the 18th century. In 1801, Ireland became a part of the United Kingdom. A war of independence in the early 20th Century was followed by the partition of the island, creating the Irish Free State, which became increasingly sovereign over the following decades, and Northern Ireland which remained a part of the United Kingdom. Northern Ireland saw much civil unrest from the late 1960s until the 1990s. This subsided following a political agreement in 1998. In 1973, both parts of Ireland joined the European Economic Community.
  • Ireland is the third largest island in Europe, and the twentieth-largest island in the world. It lies to the north-west of continental Europe and is surrounded by hundreds of islands and islets. To the east of Ireland, separated by the Irish Sea, is the island of Great Britain. Politically, the state Ireland (described as the Republic of Ireland in cases of ambiguity) covers five-sixths of the island, with Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, covering the remainder in the north-east. The population of the island is slightly over 6 million (2007), with 4.4 million in the Republic of Ireland (1.7 million in Greater Dublin and an estimated 1.75 million in Northern Ireland (800,000 in Greater Belfast).

  • Ireland is great for a number of things, Drinking, Guinness, Drinking Guinness, Dancin', Kev and Dancin' Kev. Ireland has beautiful countryside, great people and is cheap to get to by EasyJet. Unless you live in Northern Ireland, or Ireland itself, then it would probably cheaper to get the bus. A man called Tony Hawks once went round Ireland with a Fridge on his Skateboard.

  • Ireland is a small island nation, not considered to be part of the United Kingdom. Only Nothern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom. Though many people may not think of Ireland as a hotbed of spies and terrorists, the country's long and bloody conflict between those who wish for the whole of Ireland to be independent and those who want to maintain British rule over Northern Ireland has been a career starter for bombmakers like Fiona Glenanne and Thomas O'Neill, who would both end up practicing their trade abroad. The conflict has at times grown so bad as to attract foreign intervention, though the Irish patriots have not been well-known for their hospitality towards spies.

  • Ireland's gravity was quite high. As a result, everything was extremely short and dense.. The high gravity also resulted in deposits of extremely dense minerals. Gold was a prominent feature on Ireland. However, the Force was also extremely present on Ireland. Many of its native species were Force-sensitive, from the Leperchauns to the Children of the Green Planet, even to the Fourleaf trees. The Force was also naturally occuring in the planet's rocks and minerals until they were removed from the ground. Rainbow arches supported themselves against the gravity with the Force, and the planet's gold had the Force present in it in the form of luck.

  • Ireland is an island country off the northern coast of Europe, just west of Great Britain. In prehistoric times, early settles farmed and built stone structures on the island. Celtic people emerged on the island during the Iron Age. Later, Christianity spread to the island, followed by Viking, Norman, and English conquests. In 1801, Ireland became an integral part of the United Kingdom. Famine in the 1840s caused a severe population drop due to starvation and emigration (many going to the United States). By 1914, Ireland had earned Home Rule for their nation, but it was suspended during World War I. In 1916, an uprising at Easter in Dublin was violently suppressed, swaying public opinion toward independence. In 1919, three quarters of the island (all but the northernmost Protestant areas) had chosen independence, and war with the United Kingdom was fought. By 1921, independence for southern Ireland had been gained, with Northern Ireland choosing to remain with the United Kingdom. The Irish Free State fell into civil war, but eventually stabilized after World War II, becoming the Republic of Ireland. During World War II, Ireland was officially neutral, though many Irish enlisted in the British military, and Allied forces could use some Irish airspace, though there were pro-Fascist Blueshirt movements as well. The Irish culture is known for its contributions to literature, drama, and music in both the English and Irish languages. In the modern era, Ireland is known for being strongly Roman Catholic (except Northern Ireland, which is predominantly Protestant).

  • In Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, Victor Frankenstein seeks the seclusion of the Orkney Islands to finish creating a female mate for his creature. Consumed with anxiety over the idea of a second monster, Victor destroys this creation while his first creature watches. Victor packs away his scientific instruments, “determined to throw them into the sea that very night” (Shelley 133). Very early the next morning, he is rocked to sleep in his boat by the sound and motions of the sea’s waves. Victor wakes to find that the boat has drifted far from the Orkney Islands’ shore. Disoriented, he first attempts to change the boat’s course before constructing a sail out of his own clothes and maneuvering the skill towards the nearest visible land. Victor enters the harbor of a small coastal town, and upon landing ashore he is confronted by a crowd of people. Noting that the villages speak English, Victor engages in a conversation with them and discovers he has been swept to the coast of Ireland. “Ready to sink from fatigue and hunger” (Shelley 136), Victor is brought to a magistrate named Mr. Kirwin and told that the circumstances surrounding his arrival in Ireland are suspicious. Several gathered villagers reveal that a strangled body was found prior to Victor’s appearance, and upon seeing the body Victor identifies it to be that of his friend Henry Clerval. After sinking into a state of raving delirium for two months, Victor wakes in an Irish prison and finds that an old woman has been tending to him. Victor’s father arrives and accompanies him to court, where he is proven innocent. The two travel to Dublin and sail to Holyhead port. Currently, there are no adaptations of Frankenstein that travel to or are set in Ireland.

  • Among the earliest visitors to Ireland were the Phoenicians, who were reputed to travel annually to the south west of Ireland to mine copper at Mount Gabriel, returning home every winter. The bardic traditions of pre-Christian Ireland encouraged cultural travel between bardic schools in Ireland and centres of learning across Europe. This cultural and scholarly travel continued throughout the heyday of monastic learning, until the destruction of monasteries under the reign of King Henry VIII.

  • Ireland, winning-wise, is the most successful country in the Eurovision to date. Ireland holds a record of seven wins since 1970 including two wins for Johnny Logan, but however the United Kingdom have accumulated more points overall. Ireland have only missed two contests, 1983 in Munich (due to financial problems at RTÉ) and 2002 in Tallinn (due to relegation). All entries have been performed in English with the exception of 1972, which was performed in Irish instead. They also used one of the smallest host cities for Eurovision, Millstreet, which hosted the 1993 contest in County Cork. The country has never received Nul Points in competition despite being last twice and being relegated only once. Since the introduction of the semi finals, the country has missed out on qualifying for the finals on seven occasions (2005, 2008, 2009, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017) and has finished last in the finals twice (2007 and 2013).
  • Ireland was founded by a guy name Floopity Ire Landson, which is where the name came from. He founded it because he loved beer and wanted to share his love by starting a country. He asked the queen of UnBritain if he could make one and the queen gave him Ireland. This land was original supposed to be her son's, so he hired Floopity's wife to kill him, and she did in 1671. In 1701, Floopity's great great great great grandson, Aedon, took over and introduced sheep to Ireland. These sheep caused many people to become rich of off sheep ears, and made Ireland the fifth richest country in UnBritiain. This is the reason many leperchauns have pots of gold. In 1831, Shoen Bobson became president of Ireldand and still is the president to this day. On January 14th, 1867, a sheep gave birth to a potato, starting the great potato craze, which still is going on today. An Irish guy known as Billy Billson invented the rainbow here.
  • Ireland was the third-largest island in Europe and the twentieth-largest island in the world. It was located to the northwest of continental Europe and was surrounded by hundreds of islands and islets. To the east of Ireland was Great Britain, separated from it by the Irish Sea. Since the 1,100s, Ireland was enslaved and brutally ruled by Great Britain for many centuries. During this time, constant rebellions would be crushed and followed by massacres of Irish Catholics by the English/British Army. Irish Catholics also faced harsh discrimination by the British Protestants. By 1750, Ireland was ruled by King George II.

They are the only country to host it consecutively. Amazingly, they hosted Eurovision every year after they won.

  • Not many people can recall the date of the Great Irish Famine because they all either died, ate the paper everything was written on, or buggered off to mainland Britain with the eldest fine young Catholic lady in the poorest, most desperate for money family in the area, this is how Ireland lost all genetic class. Not many people are aware of the fact that the famine was actually as much caused by the Irish refusing to eat substandard food as to their inability to work a twelve hour day until they arrived in a workhouse. When the famine was finally over, every smart person left Ireland, leaving only drunks, perverts and catholics to fend the British off.

The population of the island is slightly over 5.9 million people (2006); 4.2 million in the Republic of Ireland (1.6 million in Greater Dublin ) and 1.7 million in Northern Ireland (0.6 million in Greater Belfast).
  • Ireland or rather the Republic of Ireland is an island nation in Europe. The north side of the island which is called "Northern Ireland" belongs to the United Kingdom while the southern part often regarded as the "Republic of Ireland" is an independent state.
  • In 1769, the sea-faring vessel The Reliant sailed from Ireland to Baltimore, Maryland.
  • Ireland (or Éire) was a nation-state on the planet Earth, comprised of the island of Ireland.
  • Ireland, officially the Republic of Ireland (Esperanto: Respubliko Irlando; Irish: Poblacht na hÉireann), is a member state of the European Federation. Its capital is Baile Átha Cliath.
  • Ireland is the country in which all of the Darren Shan books are set in.
  • The episode The Irish Jig Is Up of the 1987 cartoon is set there.
  • Ireland was also the name of a country on this island. The island was divided for some time, with the north-east being held by Old Britain. In 2024, Ireland was reunifed as a result of violence used as a political instrument. This event became known as the Irish Unification of 2024. (TNG: "The High Ground" ) Ireland's flag was three vertical bands of green, white, and orange. (ENT: "First Flight") In 2143, the Ariane 1 assignment patch, which was on display in the 602 Club, bore the flag of ESA member Ireland. (ENT: "First Flight") In 2151, the students of the Worley Elementary School in the Irish town of Kenmare sent Captain Jonathan Archer and his crew aboard Enterprise NX-01 letters with questions about day-to-day life and operations on the ship. (ENT: "Breaking the Ice") Kevin Riley was born in Ireland. While under the influence of the Psi 2000 intoxication, he demonstrated his national pride by singing and making situationally inappropriate remarks. (TOS: "The Naked Time" ) Finnegan was an Irishman who bullied James T. Kirk at Starfleet Academy around 2252. (TOS: "Shore Leave" ) Miles O'Brien was born in Ireland in 2328. His family lived in Dublin when O'Brien served aboard Deep Space 9. (DS9: "Homefront", "Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places") O'Brien claimed to be a descendant of the Irish king Brian Boru. (DS9: "Bar Association") In 2373, Enrique Muniz told O'Brien that Ireland did not have mountains, it had hills. (DS9: "The Ship") Kathryn Janeway's dog Mollie was an Irish Setter, a breed of dog native to Ireland. (VOY: "Caretaker", "Shattered") In 2376, Kathryn Janeway and other members of the USS Voyager crew enjoyed visiting Fair Haven (Cuan Soineanta in Irish), a holodeck creation of a 19th century Irish village. Tom Paris created the simulation. Janeway stated that she had interest in Irish culture. Neelix was considering several Irish dishes for the occasion, such as blood pudding, creamed cabbage and mutton. (VOY: "Fair Haven")
  • Fionnula Flanagan, who plays Eloise Hawking, is from Dublin.
  • Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the UK. In 1949, Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland is gradually being implemented despite some difficulties. In 2006, the Irish and British governments developed and began to implement the St. Andrews Agreement, building on the Good Friday Agreement approved in 1998.
  • The Irish Times reports one case of the new strain of H1N1 in Ireland, in a man who had recently returned from Mexico [1].
  • Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland, which covers just under five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, a part of the United Kingdom, which covers the remainder and is located in the north-east of the island. The population of Ireland is approximately 6.4 million. Just under 4.6 million live in the Republic of Ireland and just under 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland. Relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain epitomizes Ireland's geography with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild but changeable oceanic climate, which avoids extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered the island until the 17th century. Today, it is one of the most deforested areas in Europe. There are twenty-six extant mammal species native to Ireland.
  • Ireland was one of the four nations that comprised the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Its capital was Dublin, which was the centre of British administration on the island.
  • Ireland is a medium sized, rain-swept island on the western fringe of Europe, which looks a bit like a teddy bear (imagine it in the profile, looking away from Britain). It is also the name of the country that covers four fifths of that island, the rest being covered by Northern Ireland (part of the UK). For Hollywood clichés about Ireland, see Oireland. For more about Northern Ireland, see Stroke Country and The Troubles. A note on the name. The official name of the country is simply Ireland in English, but "Republic of Ireland" is the official description (The Republic of Ireland Act, 1948). Both are acceptable, though using the latter in casual speech will probably get you odd looks in Dublin (not hostile, just odd). Éire (aer-rha) is technically legitimate but for various complicated reasons involving Stroke Country is not used casually. Ireland (the country) is the second most Catholic country in Europe after Poland, though the influence of the Church has waned in recent years, especially in the wake of a sex abuse scandal and coverup, but it is still enough that Ireland got an agreement in the Lisbon Treaty that its ban on abortion would not be touched. It was also up until recently one of the poorest countries in Europe, classified as a third-world country, but this has been completely reversed over the past decade and now the country is one of richest states in the world. Irish economic success lead to the country being dubbed the Celtic Tiger - like the Tiger economies of Asia - and is mostly derived from a lot of financial investment through Ireland's EU membership. Ireland's reliance on foreign investment and large debts came back to haunt it during the international economic crisis, and it is currently on the decline again, Ireland being the first country in Europe to officially declare itself in recession, as well as being one of the PIGS economies (along with Greece, Portugal and Spain). Speaking of recessions, Ireland was very heavily hit by the recession. An Bord Snip Nua deals in cutting Ireland's strained budgets and everyone seems to be protesting. Luckily, as the whole Dáil is on holiday, some of these cuts have yet to be made. As of now, most of the cuts have been made to children (especially those with special needs), the elderly, and those below the poverty line... Don't speak ill of farmers though! If visiting Ireland, never mention the fact the farmers claim to be scraping the last two cents together, yet they can freely leave their farms and go up to Leinster House in 100 grand '08 tractors (and, yet, they are still getting grants!) One of the fastest growing too - Ireland has one of the highest fertility rates in Europe and is in the middle of an immigration boom. Ireland is also known for its agriculture, having more sheep than humans in its territory. The massive failure of the potato crop in the late 1840s led to about a million deaths and a further million emigrating. The Irish are the smartest people in the world. Don't believe me? Just ask Mensa. Ireland is also famous for its dead writers (most of whom left Ireland as fast as possible), its lack of snakes, its dancers, its poetry and love of drink. Plus the world's second highest percentage of redheads(10%), behind Scotland(13%). As such this has become a stereotype outside of Ireland (especially in the states), thus any Irish character is very likely to be sporting red hair, despite the reality that most Irish are brunettes and also more likely to be blonde too. Politically, Ireland is best described as non-aligned. It's a member of the European Union, but not of NATO. It does, however, allow Shannon airport to be used for refuelling by US military flights (which caused controversy in the lead-up to the Iraq War) and Soviet aircraft refuelled there during the Cuban Missile Crisis. During World War Two, it was officially neutral, but helped the Allies out a bit and suffered rationing due to the German blockade. Dublin was bombed once on 31 May 1941 by a German aircraft, killing 34 people, for reasons that aren't clear to this day, with various arguments for navigation error, reprisal for Dublin sending rescue personnel to Belfast, a warning not to enter the war or a result of the British radio beam "bending". The Germans apologised and offered compensation. There were two other attacks by the Luftwaffe during the war. Its military is relatively small, unlike many other neutral states, though it is still larger than a few similarly sized-states such as New Zealand (and in per-capita terms Ireland has a higher percentage of soldiers than Canada or Australia.) Since 1958 its main active function has been involvement in UN peacekeeping operations. The current Irish Taoiseach [tee-shock] (think 'Prime Minister', but don't actually say it) as of the 9th of March is Enda Kenny of Fine Gael [fee-na gale], and his Tánaiste [tawn-ish-teh](Deputy Prime Minister) is Eamonn Gilmore of the Labour Party. His predecessor was Brian 'Biffo' Cowen. 'Biffo' is a mildly pejorative but mostly affectionate nickname that stands for Big Ignorant Fecker From Offaly (the somewhat polite version). Prior to the recent election he announced his retirement from politics, and was the first Taoiseach in the history of the state not to stand for reelection. File:Nude brian cowen underpants.jpg Prior to that it was Bertie Ahern, but he stood down on 6 May 2008 for reasons involving alleged corruption (let's just say he was very good at guessing who won at the races). His daughter, Cecilia, wrote the original novel for P.S. I Love You, which has been made into a feature film. She's also the co-creator of Samantha Who. There are a large number of accents audible in modern Ireland, for example: "real" Dublin, "D4" Dublin, midlands, Traveller, Cork, Kerry, Clare, Connacht ... and these are just the main ones. Researchers have found that there's a different accent for roughly every 5 miles you travel. That's basically a new accent for every single town on the island. Fiction set in Ireland (unless it involves The Troubles) will either take place in Dublin or in a tiny village in some undefined part of the countryside. Virtually nothing takes place in other cities or towns. Exceptions are few enough to list: * The Butcher Boy (Monaghan) * Angela's Ashes (Limerick) * Pure Mule (several towns in Offaly) * The Wind that Shakes the Barley (Cork) * Heroes (part of volume 2; Cork) * Single Handed (Galway) * The Field (the geographically vague west coast) Famous Irish people: * Actors Colm Meaney, Pierce Brosnan, Richard Harris, Gabriel Byrne, Cillian Murphy, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Liam Neeson, Stuart Townsend, Colin Farrell, Daniel Day Lewis, Brendan Gleeson, Ciarán Hinds, Colin Morgan, Robert Sheehan and Ardal O'Hanlon. * Actresses Maureen O'Hara, Saoirse Ronan, Evanna Lynch and Katie McGrath. * Sir Arthur Wellesley, The Duke of Wellington. * Michael Collins, independence activist. * Edmund Burke, political theorist and philosopher. * Far too many great writers and poets to list, including James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw, Bram Stoker, William Butler Yeats, Oscar Wilde, Samuel Beckett, Seamus Heaney, Christy Brown (played by Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot, for which he got an Oscar)... * Bands/singers including U2, Thin Lizzy, My Bloody Valentine, The Boomtown Rats, The Cranberries, Van Morrison, and Sinead O'Connor, Boyzone, The Script, Westlife and Jedward. * Robert Boyle, scientist of Boyle's Law fame. * Francis Beaufort, creator of the Beaufort Scale. * George Boole, father of the transistor. * John Philip Holland, pioneer of the modern submarine. * TV/Radio presenter Sir Terry Wogan. * Comedian and Mock the Week host Dara Ó Briain. * Graham Linehan and Arthur Mathews, creators of Father Ted. * Celtic Woman and Celtic Thunder: A Girl Group and Boy Band who sing a mix of traditional Irish songs and more modern songs (at their most recent concert Voyage, Celtic Thunder sang a few traditional songs alongside Billy Joel and Garth Brooks.) Useful Notes: * Irish Political System * Prime Ministers of Ireland * The Celtic Tiger * Irish Newspapers * In Dublin's Fair City * The Irish Question * Irish Names * The Troubles * Irish Travellers * The New Irish * The Irish Diaspora * Celtic Mythology * Irish Revolution
  • Ireland is a country in north-western Europe. The modern sovereign state occupies about five-sixths of the island of Ireland, which was first partitioned on 3 May 1921. It is bordered by Northern Ireland - part of the United Kingdom - to the north, by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Irish Sea to the east and the Celtic Sea and St George's Channel to the South and South-East. The legal name of the state is simply "Ireland", but its legal description "the Republic of Ireland" is sometimes used to differentiate the state from the island. On 29 December 1937 Ireland became the successor-state to the Irish Free State, itself established on 6 December 1922. Ireland is a member of the EU, the OECD, and the UN. Ireland's policy of neutrality means it is not a member of NATO, although it does contribute to peacekeeping missions sanctioned by the UN.
  • The Republic of Ireland is an island nation in Europe, part of the British Isles.
  • Ireland is a large island off the coast of Europe. It was settled by the Celts around 300 BC and had varying degrees of influence from foreign powers over the centuries, most notably the United Kingdom when it annexed Ireland in 1801. The island nation is home to two separate countries with the Republic of Ireland in the south and the Northern Irish in Ulster still loyal to the British Government and strong loyalties to the British Crown.
  • Ireland (Irish: Éire) is a European island in the Atlantic Ocean, and next to Great Britain. It is divided into four provinces (Leinster, Ulster, Munster, and Connacht) and 32 counties. The Simpsons once visited Ireland when Grampa told them he wanted to visit a pub he used to go, the O'Flanagan's Pub. While Homer and Grampa were at the pub, Marge, Bart, and Lisa visited the Blarney Castle, the Giant's Causeway and the Guinness Brewery. Ireland's official languages are English and Irish.
  • Ireland (or Eire) was a nation-state on Earth, comprising the island of Ireland, one of the British Isles off the northwestern coast of Europe. Great Britain first invaded the Ireland in the 12th century, and held dominion over it for centuries, often marked by rebellion. In the 1920s, the island was divided, creating the Irish Free State (later the Republic of Ireland) and Northern Ireland (which remained part of the United Kingdom). In 2024, Ireland was reunited as a result of violence used as a political instrument. This event became known as the Irish Reunification of 2024. (TNG: "The High Ground") People or things originating from Ireland are described as Irish. Irish culture flourished and spread, as evidenced by the annual Irish Harp Festival. Ireland is also the home of Irish whiskey. (TOS novel: Enterprise: The First Adventure; Star Trek: Early Voyages comic: "Flesh of my Flesh"). Miles O'Brien was born in Ireland in 2328. His family lived in Dublin when O'Brien served aboard Deep Space 9. O'Brien claimed to be a descendant of Irish king Brian Boru. (DS9: "Homefront", "Bar Association") The Bringloidi were colonists of Irish descent. (TNG: "Up The Long Ladder") The Aldebaran Prime colony was also founded by Irish and Australian settlers. They named the planet's six moons after the six counties of Northern Ireland. (Kal-Dixas Spaceport, Star Trek: Pendragon, Star Trek: A Call to Duty) Kathryn Janeway's dog Mollie was an Irish Setter, a breed of dog native to Ireland. (VOY: "Caretaker") In 2376, Kathryn Janeway and other members of the USS Voyager crew enjoyed visiting Fair Haven (Cuan Soineanta in Irish), a holodeck creation of a 19th century Irish village. It is a free island state, based around anarcho-primitivism and as a result, Ireland has little-to-no modern conveniences, only a very limited access to the Wire, and is only connected to England by a ferry which sails once a week from Liverpool. Ireland thrives mostly on attracting people stressed and bored by their life in the megacities, and longing for a more primitive lifestyle in touch with nature.
  • Ireland was a country in Europe. G-2 was one of Ireland's major intelligence agencies. (CTU Operations Manual) The paramilitary group known as the Irish Republican Army was known to have committed several terrorist activities for at least a decade prior to the events of One Shot. • Ireland (Dutch: Ierland) is a constituent nation of the United Provinces of Clinkham Wood in north-western Europe. On 29 December 1937 Ireland became the successor-state to the Irish Free State, itself established on 6 December 1922. In 1949, Ireland became a republic and left the British Commonwealth. It had already ceased to participate in that organisation, however in 2008 the nation reunified with Northern Ireland to become part of the United Provinces. Ireland was one of the poorest countries in Western Europe and had high emigration but in contrast to many other states in the period remained financially solvent as a result of low government expenditure. An economic crisis led Ireland to start large-scale economic reforms in the late 1980s. Ireland reduced taxation and regulation dramatically compared to other EU countries.

  • Ireland is an island and consists of the Republic of Ireland, on the south, and the Irish portion of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Ireland was the country of origin of the McFly family after Harold McFly moved there from England. Seamus McFly and his wife Maggie lived in Ballybowhill before moving to America. The DeLorean DMC-12 originated at the DMC automobile factory in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland. The car's stainless steel construction made it a good choice for its conversion by Doc Brown into the DeLorean time machine, because it aided the flux dispersal. Because of their Irish heritage, most members of the McFly family were harassed by non-Irish, particularly by Tannens.

  • Ireland is the emerald island near Europe, and also a republic that covers most of the island. Prior to the coming of Christianity, the pagan religion of Ireland was a form of Druidism. In 431, Pope Celestine appointed Palladius as the first Bishop of Ireland, establishing Christianity on the emerald isle. Two years later, in 433, Saint Patrick became the second bishop, and is remembered as the patron saint of Ireland (feast day March 17). Ireland is 94.1% Christian. The demographics break down as: Roman Catholic 90.4%, Church of Ireland 2.95%, Presbyterian 0.5%, Methodist 0.25%, Jewish 0.05% other 0.27% (2002) The Republic of Ireland is officially 90.4% Roman Catholic. However there has been a massive decline in adherence to Roman Catholicism among Irish Catholics. Between 1996 and 2001, regular Mass attendance, already previously in decline, declined from 60% to 48%. (It had been 90%+ in 1973.) All but two of its priest-training seminaries have either closed or are expected to close soon. The Roman Catholic Church was hit in the 1990s by a series of sexual scandals, including the resignation of one bishop who had fathered a child by a divorced cousin and the notorious case of child sexual abuser Fr. Brendan Smyth. In recent years, another bishop has been forced to resign over his incompetent handling of paedophile priests in his diocese. The second largest religion, the Church of Ireland (Anglican), with a largely elderly membership, had until recently been in decline. It had been forced to close down many of its rural churches, and even some in urban areas. However, recent immigration of thousands of African Anglicans has buoyed the Church's following. A similar phenomenon is also affecting the very small Jewish community in Ireland, which is ageing and sees many of its younger adherents emigrating to Israel. The religions showing major growth are Islam (See Islam in Ireland) and small born-again Christian faiths associated with Ireland's growing immigrant communities. The country also has a small Jewish community with 1,930 members, according to the census of 2006.
