- A cenotaph is an "empty tomb" or a monument erected in honour of a person or group of people whose remains are elsewhere. It can also be the initial tomb for a person who has since been interred elsewhere. The word derives from the = kenotaphion (kenos, one meaning being "empty", and taphos, "tomb"). Although the vast majority of cenotaphs are erected in honour of individuals, many noted cenotaphs are instead dedicated to the memories of groups of individuals, such as the lost soldiers of one country or empire.
- The Cenotaph is an ancient, monumentally large pillar of black rock which rises from a cliff on the southern tip of the mountains that mark the Hold of Belkzen's western border. The main feature of this enormous rock is the huge pair of fifty-foot-high doors that bar entrance to whatever lies within. The Cenotaph is usually associated with the Whispering Tyrant for it was he who marched legions of his army through the yawning gates of this citadel. No one knows why he did this, and with the Whispering Tyrant's defeat the doors to the Cenotaph swung shut and have not been opened since. Despite this association, the Cenotaph was actually built before the rise of the Whispering Tyrant, a fact which has lead to much scholarly debate over its true origins.

If the player fails one of the riddles, Cenotaph will 'punish' the player by casting harmful magic and summoning Imps. The player can choose to smash the statue at some point, which will cause it to change into Jailer of Love. In November 1980, Albert Tatlock laid his own wreath at the Cenotaph in memory of his pal Monty Shawcross who had served with him in the Lancashire Fusiliers and who had died a week before, full of plans to travel to London for that year's Remembrance Sunday parade. Albert wanted to go to London in honour of Monty but, unable to raise the funds to go that far, opted to pay his respects more locally instead.
