  • This version of Lois Lane is based on the Smallville TV series (2001-??) as seen on the CW.
  • Lois is the daughter of General Sam Lane and an unnamed mother. She spent her formative years as an army brat, following her career military father around the world. Her mother died when Lois and her younger sister, Lucy were both very young; Lois was six at the time. Later, Sam sent Lucy to boarding school, while Lois traveled around with him during her youth. She also had a school romance with Wes Keenan, who was also an army brat. Lois Lane is a fledgling journalist working for the Daily Planet and the bold, outspoken, older cousin of Chloe Sullivan. She has worked a variety of jobs over the years: campaign manager for Jonathan Kent when he ran for Kansas State Senator, chief of staff for Martha Kent when she took Jonathan's position in the State Senate, and reporter for the Metropolis Inquisitor. Since living at the Kent Farm for most of what should have been her freshman year of college, Lois has grown quite close to the Kents, even seeing Martha Kent as the mother she never had. Her relationship with Clark Kent is full of teasing that sometimes gets the best of them; however, they also look after each other and offer each other advice. She also dated Oliver Queen for a short, finding out that he is the famous Green Arrow. Lois was the Maid of Honor at Chloe's wedding in November 2008. During the wedding, she started to show her feelings toward Clark and they almost shared a kiss until Lana Lang showed up and interrupted them, leaving Lois devastated.
  • Lois was part of a military family as her father, Sam Lane, was actively enlisted in a branch of the military. From the uniform he is seen wearing, it can be inferred that he was in the Air Force. It is also inferred that the family lived on a military base. Lois seems to have had a close relationship with her father based on dialogue in the series. Further, he seems to have trained her in the martial arts as she defended herself directly on at least one occasion and as she said "daddy was a black belt". Lois was not above taking risks to get a story as well as using aggressive tactics to accomplish her goals. She is an an award winning reporter who has traveled a great deal and can be easily classified as the Daily Planet's star reporter. Lois liked to be on top, even if it included regularly beating her fellow reporter Clark Kent to a story.

Befriending the superhero, Lois also gained a new partner, Clark Kent, whom she initially disliked; seeing him as a rival, but eventually fell in love and married. Only later did she discover that Clark and Superman were one and the same person.
  • Lois Lane-Kent is the primary love interest in the DC Comics’ Superman stories. Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, she first appeared in Action Comics #1 (1938). Lois' physical appearance was originally based on a Model (person) hired by Siegel and Shuster named Joanne Carter, who would later marry Siegel. Lois's personality was based on Torchy Blaine, a female reporter featured in a series of films from the 1930s. Siegel took her name from actress Lola Lane, who portrayed Torchy in one of the middle entries. Lois is Superman's chief romantic interest and, in the current DC Continuity (fiction), his wife. Like Superman’s Alter ego Clark Kent, she is a reporter for the Metropolis (comics) newspaper, The Daily Planet. Depictions of Lois Lane have varied since her character was created in 1938 spanning the 70-year history of Superman Comic book and other media adaptations. During the Silver Age, she was the star of Superman, a comic title that had a light and frivolous tone. However, the original Golden Age version of Lois, as well as versions of her from the 1970s onwards, portray Lois as a tough-as-nails journalist and intellectual equal to Superman. One thing has remained throughout the character's 70-year history, however: she has always been the most prominent love-interest in Superman's life and is seen by many fans as the archetypical comic book love interest.
  • Lois Lane is (of course) the Romantic Interest of Superman. She first appeared in Action Comics #1 (June, 1938), the first published Superman story. As such, she's the Trope Codifier for (a type of) superhero love interest- the one who doesn't realize that the hero she loves is also someone close to her. The characters inspired by her are countless. Over the decades, Lois has been a symbol both for and against feminism; while she is a career woman (an Intrepid Reporter) who speaks her mind and goes for the big scoop regardless of danger, she has also been the object of mockery for not noticing that her fellow reporter Clark Kent is Superman. On this front she is normally joined by Clark Kent's other close friends, but she is closer to either of them than anyone else who does not know they are the same, and even in Lois and Clark where she does figure out the fact that Clark Kent is Superman before he tells her, she has made out with him on at least one occasion under both identities before that. She also gets marked down by some since she is constantly getting in trouble that she needs to be rescued from. However at least in some incarnations this often involves her as a bold, fearless attacker who will grad whatever large object is around and go after the local evil force, at times when such a force is in the process of defeating Superman without the use of Kryptonite. During the Silver Age of comics, Lois had her own series, titled Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane. Which lasted for 137 issues, from March-April, 1958 to September-October, 1974. In this series, which had a more humorous tone, Lois became a shrew who constantly tried to prove that Clark was Superman on the assumption that he would *have* to marry her then. Instead of, you know, simply courting him the regular way. (Note that Superman himself was openly courting her, but Lois apparently felt that she still needed to prove herself smarter than him. No wonder she became a target of his Super Dickery so often. It should also be noted that this was how most superhero love interests flew anyway). To be fair, they DID truly love each other, both just had a lot of quirks to overcome. Eventually, an adult version of the character of Lana Lang (originally created to serve the same role as Lois but in the Superboy series) also joined the cast, in order to force Superman into a Love Triangle (though Lana had pretty much the same personality as Lois, making you feel even sorrier for him.) Other stories had Lois fall in relationships with other superheroes, including (in one Time Travel story) Superman's own father, Jor-El. Mostly she was just trying to make him jealous, or just happened to attract the attention of other Superman-like characters. Those stories always ended with Lois and Superman back in their original situation by the end, often because The Paolo turned out to be evil/a shape-shifting ameoba/from a planet with a toxic atmosphere/all of the above. Sometimes she became a superhero herself, also only briefly. In some "imaginary" stories (meaning, not intended as part of the official canon) Lois did get to marry Superman, though almost always with bad consequences for her (having to hide from criminals, raising bratty superpowered kids, etc.) In one such story she married a (reformed) Lex Luthor instead! By the 1970s, her series attempted to modernize: Lois no longer tried to rope Superman into a wedding, dressed less conservatively and the stories tackled more serious subjects. Unfortunately, one of them was racial injustice, which it tried to explore by... having Lois be transformed into a Black woman for one day. While the intention was good, the story felt very awkward, especially towards the end when she asked Superman if he would still love her if she never changed back. Lois was eventually allowed to finally marry Superman; the first time, it was the original Lois Lane (the one from the 1940s comics) since that version was declared to exist in a Parallel Universe and was not the "current" version. Ironically, in this story Superman (due to a magic spell) forgets he's a superhero and marries Lois as Clark Kent. But then she discovers he's really Superman and helps him regain his memory. She expects him to declare the marriage null, but instead, he marries her again, this time as Superman (in a private ceremony.) The modern Lois also got to marry Superman in the 1990s, first in the TV show Lois and Clark and then in the comics. This was the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths version, who was the 1970s version only more so. Most notably, her relationship (before she learnt his identity) was clearly with Clark, not Superman, in keeping with the Post-Crisis Superman's belief that "Superman is what I do, Clark Kent is who I am". There had been elements of this in the Bronze Age, but it was still mostly presented as "Lois is dating Clark because she suspects he's Superman". As of the New 52 reboot, Lois is no longer married to Clark, and is dating someone else. The first Lois died during the events of Infinite Crisis (as did the first Superman) only for both to be brought back during the Blackest Night crisis as Black Lanterns. Neither marriage had children, so far (except for her son in Superman Returns.) You also could count the adoption of Christopher Kent, a young Kryptonian boy who turned out to be the son of General Zod.) Lois continues to be an inextricable part of the Superman mythos and appears in virtually every version of the character, be it comics, movies or animation.

Her relationship with Clark was initially full of teasing that sometimes got the best of them; however, they also looked after each other and offered each other advice. Eventually Lois and Clark became each other's closest friends outside of Chloe, but their teasing continued without fail. [citation needed] Lois was the Maid of Honor at Chloe's wedding in November 2008. During the wedding, she finally was willing to show her feelings toward Clark and they almost shared a kiss, until Lana Lang showed up and interrupted them, Lois was upset and disappointed and found herself talking to Oliver, who called her out on her feelings toward Clark. The wedding ended disastrously when a raging monster kidnapped Chloe and severely injured Chloe's husband, Jimmy Olsen. Jimmy was transferred to Star City for care and Lois accompanied him, stating that she would stay with him until she heard from Chloe again. She finally returned a month later, after Jimmy was well and Lana's departure. After that, she got closer to the Red-Blue Blur by temporarily disguising herself as a superhero named Stiletto. Clark decided to help Lois feel better about herself and her work after a dry spell at work. She spoke to the Red-Blue Blur before he confronted Doomsday and arranged to meet with him face-to-face, but she got into a fight with Tess Mercer and found the Legion ring Clark had left behind, which transported her a year into the future. Clark was shown to be a broken man after Jimmy's death and Lois' disappearance, only showing any connection with his human side when it involved looking for Lois. Three weeks later, Lois returned with no memories of her trip other than a vivid dream. It was at this point in time Clark's feelings were shown as really beginning to change where Lois was concerned, showing that the romantic feelings were not as one sided as they originally were. After five years of friendship, Lois and Clark fell passionately in love and decided to become a couple. Around the same time, Lois started helping the Blur, and came to the realization that she wanted to feel a higher purpose in life. Everything was seemingly fine for a while, but as time went on, Lois and Clark both continued to hide things from one another and their relationship began to strain. When Lois saw that Clark didn't seem to understand her need to do something important with her life, she decided to break up with him for the time being. While she loved him, she needed time to figure out what to do with her life. Later as Zod was masquerading as the Blur, he revealed his identity to Lois and started to manipulate her into believing that Clark was a threat and was in possession of the Book of Rao. Clark tried to warn Lois about Zod, but when he refused to admit to the secrets he was keeping from her, she launched an investigation of her own. Lois gave Clark one more chance to come clean, telling him that Perry White asked her to go to Africa for work, hoping Clark would just be honest with her and ask her to stay. Clark did not tell her the truth about the Book of Rao and his involvement with Zod, instead he told her to go to Africa, upsetting her. Lois stole the Book of Rao from Clark while they were saying goodbye, intending to give it to Zod. Lois then discovered that Zod was not the Blur when he couldn't answer a question that the real Blur would know. Zod then tried to kill Lois, but she was saved by the Blur. Lois encountered the real Blur who shared a very passionate kiss with her in a darkened alley, after which she realized that Clark and the Blur were the same person. After the kiss that opened her eyes to the truth, Lois made the decision to not tell Clark that she knew who he was. Instead, she found ways to not notice what Clark was doing so he could run off if needed. She was also acting as a supporter for Clark's alter-ego, telling Clark how great the Blur was and how much she needed him; trying to give Clark more confidence in himself while he was surrounded by anti-hero sentiment. When it became clear to her that Clark didn't realize that she knew the truth and that she was a weakness for his enemies to go after, she decided to go to Africa to work with Perry. After a couple weeks of staying in Egypt, Lois returned to Metropolis, much to Clark's delight. The duo became partners at The Daily Planet again, and it was obvious that they wanted to resume their romance as well, but both were afraid to do so. Lois and Clark have since admitted their love, followed by Clark revealing his secret to her. Clark received his own startling revelation that Lois already knew. Clark proposed to Lois, declaring his lifelong commitment to her by placing a ring on her finger after she happily accepted.

  • Lois Lane attended Metropolis U and learned absolutely nothing. Except possibly bad fashion sense. (Example: that white skirt in Superman: The Movie. Geez.) Perry White would like you to think she is a super terrific reporter. That is an elaborate, poorly constructed front. Just like that sentence. In all of her incarnations, she has failed to: * make a connection between Clark Kent and Superman * remove the parsley from between her teeth * smile straight * stand straight * have a good hair day * quit smoking cigarettes However, it is a little beyond the pale to accuse her of being the only one who hasn't made the connection between Superman and Clark Kent despite the fact that several bellboys and a pizza deliverer have sworn to have seen a bespectacled man rushing out the doors of the headquarters of what Perry insists on calling the greatest newspaper ever and pulling off his clothes in a telephone booth to reveal thermals underneath. Very bright thermals... Puzzling indeed is Lois' inability to put two and two together and see quite plainly that Clark Kent and Superman have the same height, knowledge, periods of endless flatulence, ridiculously optimistic views about saving the world and an annoying tick with the left eye when they spot the hot dog stand from across the street. Some viewers become quite irate that Lois is incapable of discerning that both Clark Kent and Superman use the exact identical sweep of the hand to remove hair from her face - usually at a 90 degree angle. It may well have been that Lois was lousy at mathematics at school or she just may be lousy at most things. From a strictly legal perspective Superman's male gaze can shoot lasers so really Lois is always in a state of legal duress and a judge would rule her unable to verbally consent to sleeping with Superman in much the way Steve Trevor is always somewhat afraid of Wonder Woman crushing him to death during sex. If Lois did sleep with Superman she could also be charged with bestiality as she has human rights and he does not. In many places lying to obtain sex is considered rape by deception which means if she could out Clark had been lying about being human she could sue the bright red shorts off of him and the cape off his back.
