abstract
  • Under Yanayev's Administration, the Soviet Union had to deal with its uncontested role as the world's leading superpower. This included dealing with the squabbling new nations formed from the United States, including the most powerful among them, the reborn Confederate States. Yanayev also prosecuted the War on Terror against the Islamic Fundamentalist organization Al-Qaeda, and the ensuing Soviet Invasion of the Middle East against the various Middle Eastern countries after they refused to hand over the leaders of the organization. Yanayev also prosecuted Fourth World War against the Confederate States and allies from 2004 until 2009, and was succeeded by Gennady Zyuganov after his death in 2010. During the course of the Fourth World War, Yanayev was forced to juggle the responsibilities of prosecuting the war against the Allies with the responsibilities of the ongoing power struggle within the politburo. Gennady Zyuganov supported a more humane approach to the war, with relief packages for areas under occupation, while hardliners such as Alexander Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin supported a form of total warfare not seen since the Second World War. These hardliners forced Yanayev to appoint sympathizers to high-ranking military positions, such as Alexey Maslov in charge of the war in Europe, and Vladimir Boldyrev in charge of the American front.
