The cataclysm is the Greek expression for the Biblical Great Flood of Noah, from the Greek kataklysmos, to 'wash down' ('kluzein' wash - 'kata' down'). Erudite Bible studies drew it into the English language in 1633 and it has also been used to describe other biblical events such as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah or The tenth plague of Egypt. The modern usage of cataclysm is mostly confined to geological phenomena of high significance such as the destruction of Pompeii, the Tunguska event, 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake or the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collision with Jupiter.
- The Cataclysm (Great Destruction) was a catastrophic event that occurred when the Kingpriest of Istar demanded to be given godlike powers in order to eliminate evil from the world. The gods threw down a fiery mountain upon the Kingpriest and all of Istar for his impunity. The result of this destruction was the creation of the Blood Sea of Istar. Along with the loss of Istar, the rest of the continent was shattered by quakes and disease came with great pestilence. Perhaps the most tragic of all was that the gods of light receded, leaving the mortals to fend for themselves.

*While Cataclysm can be used to protect an objective or team members from harm directly, it is also possible to manage ranged threats by surrounding them with the skill instead of the players, then eliminating them individually as they are revealed by the shrinking sphere.
**Generally, this is disadvantageous when facing high concentrations of melee enemies, as it effectively provides them cover from the team until outside the sphere.
***Allies can be Banished so they can attack enemies within Cataclysm without them needing to go inside it.
**Using Cataclysm in this way is most effective when enemies are in open spaces or stationary. In particular, Corpus MOAs and the heavy units from several factions exhibit the tendency to stand in the open and fire while relatively stationary, leaving them vulnerable to this technique.
***Stasis can also be activated to keep enemies inside the Cataclysm.
**This method offers an alternative means of managing scattered groups of enemies without denying the use of datamasses in Mobile Defense, since players in the Rift cannot interact with consoles, even if they are carrying a datamass.
*When debating whether to emphasize Duration or Range mods in a Cataclysm-oriented build, consider that the Range will often dictate the "effective duration" of the ability, since it can often become smaller than is useful in the latter stages of its duration.
**Narrow Minded is a mod to consider carefully before equipping at high level, since it will not only decrease the maximum size of the sphere, but also the minimum size. This is especially important since Narrow Minded will also serve to prolong the skill's later stages in which it has shrunken considerably and may be less useful.
***This mod can also be highly advantageous when size is of less importance than duration, such as screening Defense, Mobile Defense, or Excavation missions objectives from harm.
**Since Range mods improve both the initial AND final range of the skill, it is possible to create a Cataclysm which never becomes too small to fight inside before it ends naturally, never requiring an early recast.

*Cataclysm's formation and collapse each deal 200 / 300 / 400 / 500 damage to enemies caught within the area of effect. Additionally, collapsing deals bonus damage based on the average health and shields of enemies caught in the explosion:

***Bonus damage further scales with Cataclysm's current range/duration, dealing 25% of its total when at its maximum and ranking up to 100% when at its minimum.
**Base damage from either explosion does not diminish with distance and is affected by Ability Strength, while the collapse bonus is not.
**Additionally, enemies caught in either explosion take 300 transitional damage upon entering or leaving the Rift plane.
***Transition damage is not affected by Ability Strength.
*Weapon attacks only apply when enemies and their targets are both present in the Rift. Otherwise, weapon damage, critical hits, and status effects have no effect on both parties.
*Warframe abilities can affect targets across the different dimensional planes.
*Rift Walking causes Limbo to enter the Rift plane, allowing him to damage enemies within Cataclysm.
*Cataclysm affects most bosses and objectives that are otherwise not affected by Banish, causing them to enter the Rift plane while within its influence.
*Enemies are visually coated in rippling energy and monochrome flames while in the Rift plane.

- In the final days of the Mage Wars, the Archmage Urtho was betrayed by one of his generals, Shaiknam, who sent a traitorous mage to assassinate him. The mage, Conn Levas, did succeed in fatally poisoning Urtho. Urtho had trapped his Tower and Gate network, to explode upon his death. He had hoped to use it as a final weapon against Ma'ar. With his death imminent, Urtho sent Skandranon off with a magical device to eliminate Ma'ar and his magic. He also completed the evacuation of his people and armies. When Skandranon set off the device in the throne room of the Royal Palace of Tantara, Ma'ar's current headquarters, Ma'ar's set spells were destroyed causing waves of destructive magic to move outward like ripples on a pond. Urtho's nearly simultaneous death, and the subsequent destruction of his magical network moments later caused a second set of waves, crashing into the first set. The explosions resulted in two massive craters where the palace and Tower once stood, which later became Lake Evendim and the Dhorisha Plains, respectively. The ripples of wild magic crashing into each other twisted the land between the two locations, forming the weirdness of the Pelagirs. The explosion caused ripples in the magic fields of the land, prompting what came to be called Mage Storms. Creatures caught in the Storms could be killed or changed in various ways. Thousands of years later, these waves echoed back over Velgarth in a second set of Mage Storms. In the wake of the destruction and havoc, there were no centralized governments left in the northern part of Velgarth. The largest level of organization was the small town or former army fortification. Some refugees made it as far as the Wtasi Empire located on the shore of the Salten Sea to the east. They sent back reports on the devastation and collapse of civilization in the lands Ma'ar had controlled. Some places, especially large cities, had been entirely dependent on magical Gates for food and other supplies. With the collapse of the Gates, the people starved. And with the onslaught of the surviving soldiers, chaos descended.

- The Cataclysm (Great Destruction) was a catastrophic event that occurred when the Kingpriest of Istar demanded to be given godlike powers in order to eliminate evil from the world. The gods threw down a fiery mountain upon the Kingpriest and all of Istar for his impunity. The result of this destruction was the creation of the Blood Sea of Istar. Along with the loss of Istar, the rest of the continent was shattered by quakes and disease came with great pestilence. Perhaps the most tragic of all was that the gods of light receded, leaving the mortals to fend for themselves.

It is unclear to what degree the cataclysm affected the world. Only the effects on Daventry and the surrounding land are seen, but it is suggested that the trouble affected the entire world. In fact, much of the world appears to have disappeared leaving only a small flat disk centered on the continent of Daventry, both water and lava flow off the edge of the world. It is explained that the Frozen Reaches lie to the northern edge of the world, and naught lies beyond.

- The Cataclysm was a major event in the history of Atreia. In an attempt to end the Millennium War, Lord Israphel called for peace with the Dragon Lords , making an offer to lower the Aetheric Field . However, this would leave the Tower of Eternity vulnerable and was hotly debated among the Empyrean Lords, who were divided on the issue. One group, led by Lady Ariel, supported Israphel’s call for peace and argued that lowering the Field would be a gesture of good faith and could open the door for discourse and possibly an end to the war. Lord Azphel had a different view. He was of the opinion that lowering the Aetheric Field was foolish and showed weakness on their part--weakness that the Dragon Lords would surely plan to use to their own advantage. In the end, the Aetheric Field was lowered and the Dragon Lords arrived. As the conversation began, an unknown assassin attempted to take the life of a Dragon Lord Beritra. In reality however the Archdaeva and those who loyal to him, saw a chance to destroy the Balaur threat once and for all. A fierce battle started with the Archdaeva giving orders of a charge against Fregion and the balaur accompanying him. The Tower of Eternity was shattered, breaking Atreia apart with it. It is now as it was then. This tragic event is known today as the Cataclysm. In Aion 5.0, it was revealed the two Tower halves were simply frozen in time by Siel. She succeeded to stop the collapse, but with a price and it was only temporary. Aetria is facing complete destruction once again, as Siel's aetheric field is starting to weaken.

Furthermore, Cataclysm was forced to exterminate his fission-brother, the Cub, for his failure in the trial that would dictate the Cub's ascension to the position of Herald of Shokaract. When Antagony did not return from ancient Earth, Cataclysm was chosen again to secure the Dark Essence. However, his travel to the past via Transwarp portal was interrupted by Windrazor, the fused form of the Cub and the Veteran, and Cataclysm was defeated, his component molecules scattered across the timestream. When Shokaract himself journeyed to ancient Earth to secure his source of power, he brought both Antagony and Cataclysm back to life to fight the Covenant of Primus while he attempted to protect the Dark Essence from attack by Megatron. Cataclysm was destroyed yet again, this time by Apelinq and members of the Covenant, and once the Dark Essence was destroyed, he was presumably erased from time along with all that Shokaract had created.

- The Ferines once dominated Shining Blue, worshiping the entity, Nerifes, until the Orerines arrived on a giant, island-like ship named the Legacy. This new race soon created land upon the surface of the world by using the power of Nerifes and Ferines to do so. Because of this, hatred began to grow among the races until it fully escalated into a war. The Orerines won and the Ferines fled aboard the Legacy. By using the Wings of Light onboard the Legacy, they established the Kingdom of Terises. However, after the birth of a new Merines, the Ferines again used the power of the Wings of Light, as well as the Merines's life, to eliminate a large portion of the mainland that was created when the Orerines first arrived. When the Wings of Light activates, it causes the tower where it is located to shine vibrantly. A huge glyph resembling a flower then surrounds the ocean where the Legacy is, and finally, a large tidal wave sinks the glyph area beneath the sea. During the events of the story, this event is remembered more as a myth than anything else, although the truth of its occurrence is recorded in the four elemental monuments of the Quiet Lands. It is later revealed that the Cataclysm was an effort by the Ferines to restore the planet to its original state, in which Shining Blue was entirely covered in ocean before the arrival of the Orerines.

- Ayla and Chou use Cataclysm as an example of a major supervillian. Cataclysm has creepy tentacles; otherwise he (she, it) is never described. Cataclysm has lots of throwaway mentions in Ayla's inner monologue. At some point Cataclysm attempted to set off underwater disasters to create tsunami's all over the Pacific Rim. Lady Astarte and her teammates prevented much of the disaster, but 4000 people in the South Pacific still died. Apparently, there's a Cataclysm Fan Club.

- The Cataclysm was the name given to a global war which took place on an unnamed planet sometime prior to 2376. This conflict was apparently fought with nuclear weapons, and evidence suggests chemical and biological weapons may also have been employed. The Kornak Armed Forces emerged as the victors of this conflict, though it had the effect of creating widespread illness and birth defects due to radiation and other types of poisionings. The Cataclysm had severe social ramifications to the Cardassian (then "Hebitian") people. A poorly-organized governmental response to the people's mass suffering exacerbated the long-simmering discontent of individuals who disagreed with the religious-based government. A revolution led by Tret Akleen eventually toppled the Hebitian government and led to the establishment of the dictatorial Cardassian Union.
