  • "Go in quest of knowledge, even all the way to China." Ever since the beginning of Man's thirst for knowledge, there have been people who specially devote their time and money to the pursuit of further knowledge. This elite caste of men were, and are still held in high esteem. They are scholars, and form an integral part in the growth of civilisation, as human existence itself cannot continue or flourish without their input. Scholars are "bought" at the University, where they begin actively collecting information from the moment of their creation. Each scholar in the University normally adds +5 to the amount of Knowledge gathered per minute. They are a necessary part of any civilisation as without them, the civilisation would stay stagnant in the Dark Age, and cannot progress. You cannot buy Knowledge from the market nor trade it with other civilizations, so the scholar is the way to obtain Knowledge (that or building and razing Universities repeatedly, which is neither economic nor convenient). However, note that the cost of recruiting scholars is extremely high, so you will needs tonnes of bullion just to keep an army of scholars even to upgrade leather-clad spearmen into fully mailed knights, backed by powerful weapons of mass destruction. Nevertheless, the number of upgrades and units produced by scholars means that they will be highly valued and also made a prime target. If playing against the Japanese, always be wary of their ninja which can raze a university before slaying its occupants to impede your opponent's progress. Many people assume that the post-Roman era was one of scientific ignorance and religious bigotry. Many people, in fact, are often wrong in saying so. Contrary to the Western concept of the "Dark Ages", the Old World at the onset of the 10th century represented years of continuous prosperity and progress. The concept of a European Dark Age characterised by superstition and intellectual sloth, often commonly held in Anglocentric spheres, is usually the result of ignorance of the cultural splendour and technological progress of the Chinese, Indian, Byzantine and Muslim civilisations. In Europe itself, a re-discovery of Latin literature and Roman culture was taking place, particularly in the Frankish empire of the 9th century. This was the first Roman renaissance, and while it would be thwarted by the social chaos of war-torn Europe, it would represent the first feelers of European society towards reclaiming the prestige and glory of the Roman world for her people.
  • A Scholar's job is to study many things in the Matoran life. They required peace and quiet, sending messengers on important errands for them.
  • A scholar in Eberron may study in any number of places and specialize in myriad forms of knowledge. The great universities and arcane collectives are the most renowned however.
  • The Scholar is a Mystic class with a bias towards Item use and healing. It is one of the very few classes granting the Safety skill, and one of the two highest Rank Mystic classes with the Medic skill. It is also the only class that starts with the Safety skill; all others must reach a higher upgrade level before they get it. How to Obtain: This is one of the hardest classes to obtain in the game, probably because its benefits way outclass its Rank. To change to Scholar from a non-Mystic type, you either need INT significance or a perfect balance between Weapons, Items, and Mystic skills, with Mystic being higher than the other two but by less than 10%. From Mystic types you can either achieve the above balance as well, or you have to establish the Item/Mystic balance before reaching INT41. Trying to get the balance after that will likely result in changing to a hybrid or an Item-related class instead. Using any Item skill other than Potions also runs the risk of losing this class as soon as the stat requirements for the Rank 5 Item-related classes are met. Upgrade Options: The next Rank of the Mystic classes requires three Mystic skills to be developed: * Sage: highest Mystic skill is Hexes and at least 3 Mystic skills trained to level 7+, INT47+ * Thaumaturge: highest Mystic skill is Invocations or Evocations and at least 3 Mystic skills trained to level 7+, INT47+ Failing that, there are other Mystic classes: * Commander: highest Mystic skill is Wards, INT53+ * Warlock: requires all Arcana learned, INT59+ Since Mystics are already established as significant, developing another skill group will open up these options (PC only): * Paladin: highest Mystic skill is Psionics, STR47+ or INT47+ * Cleric: requires Quad Wield 13, STR47+ or INT47+ * Deathknight: requires Dual Power Grip 16, STR53+ or INT53+ * Ataraxian: requires Dual Two-Handed 17, STR53+ or INT53+ * Ninja: requires Dual Wield 22 and Katana 19, STR59+ or INT59+ Since the Item/Mystic balance likely already establishes Items as a significant skill group, Item-related classes are also an option: * Guardian: requires Item>Mystic, One-Handed 13 or Power Grip 13 or Two-Handed 13, Herbs 6 or Lotions 6, STR47+. This can be tricky as the Item significance also qualifies the unit for all Item and Item+Combat classes. Weapons will likely have to be trained to become the only significant skill before meeting the Item requirement. On the X360, it's much easier as only Items>Mystics is needed. * Thief: highest Item skill is Explosives, STR47+ or INT47+ * Alchemist: highest Item skill is Shards, STR53+ or INT53+ Item + Combat (PC only) * Scout: highest Item skill is Herbs, STR41+ or INT41+ * Hunter: highest Item skill is Lotions, STR47+ or INT47+ * Wanderer: highest Item skill is Traps, STR47+ or INT47+ * Assassin: requires One-Handed 15 and Sword 13, STR53+ or INT53+ Going to the other side of the spectrum, Combat classes are an option, but will require extensive grinding: * Guardian: requires Item>Mystic, One-Handed 13 or Power Grip 13 or Two-Handed 13, Herbs 6 or Lotions 6, STR47+. This can be tricky as the Item significance also qualifies the unit for all Item and Item+Combat classes. Weapons will likely have to be trained to become the only significant skill before meeting the Item requirement. On the X360, getting Items above Mystics is all that's needed. * Gladiator: requires Mystic>Item, Power Grip 16, highest Mystic skill is Wards, STR53+. X360 requirements are more lax, requiring only Mystic>Item. * Ordainer: requires Item/Mystic balance, all Weapon Types level 19+, STR59+

  • Time Taken: One round to several days. Specialization: Particular field of study — archaeology, Jedi lore, history, geology, physics. This skill reflects formal academic training or dedicated research in a particular field. Scholar also reflects a character's ability to find information through research. Characters often choose a specialization to reflect a specific area which they have studied. Specializations are subjects often taught at the great universities throughout the galaxy, including archaeology, botany, chemistry, geology, history, hyperspace theories, and physics. Specializations can also be topics a character can research on his own. Scholar represents "book-learning," not information learned from practical experience. A character can know the various hyperspace theories inside and out, but this doesn't qualify him to fly starships through hyperspace (that's covered by the astrogation skill). He might know the physical principles which make a blaster fire, but that doesn't make him a better shot. Gamemasters can choose to allow players a limited benefit under certain circumstances — the character is applying theory in a real-world situation. For example, a character with scholar: military tactics (the history of tactics) normally doesn't get a bonus to tactics rolls, but under certain circumstances, a good scholar: military tactics roll might merit a small (+ ID or so) bonus to tactics. Gamemasters should allow players to choose their own scholar specializations — new ones can be created at the gamemaster's discretion. When determining a character's background, players should explain why and how they gained such academic training in a field. Like many other Knowledge skills, the difficulty is based on the obscurity and detail of the information sought.
