abstract
  • Operation Detachment or Battle of Bastion in 19 ABY was a decisive victory by combined assault of Confederate forces led by General Nicole Kroger and Rebel Alliance forces led by the Luke Skywalker over an Imperial Army commanded by Darth Skillet and Admiral Needa. It proved to be the last major land battle of the War of Secession, as the surrender of Skillet's army prompted the Imperial government eventually to negotiate an end to the conflict. In 18 ABY, 5,500 Rebel Alliance soldiers landed in Yavin IV to assist their Confederate allies in operations against Imperial-controlled Dantooine. Following the arrival of dispatches from the Alliance that included the possibility of support from the Rebel Alliance fleet, Nicole Kroger decided to ask Skywalker for assistance either in besieging Dantooine, or in military operations against an Imperial army operating on Bastion. On the advice of Kroger, Skywalker informed them of his intent to sail to Bastion, where Needa had taken command of the army. Langdon Nitus, at first given confusing orders by his superior officer, Needa, was eventually ordered to make a defensible deep-water port, which he began to do at Bastion. Needa's movements on Bastion were shadowed by a Confederate Army force led by Tycho Welch. The Rebel and Confederate armies united north of the capital of Bastion during the summer of 19 ABY. When word of Skywalker's decision arrived, the combined armies began moving south toward the capital, engaging in tactics of deception to lead the Imperials to believe a siege of Yavin IV was planned. Skywalker arrived at Bastion at the end of August, bringing additional troops and providing a naval blockade of Bastion. He was transporting 500,000 silver credits collected from the citizens of Tatooine, to fund supplies for the siege and payroll for the Confederate Army. As a result of a past victory, Skywalker blocked any escape by space for Needa. By late September the Krogers and Skywalker arrived, and the army and naval forces completely surrounded Needa. After initial preparations, the Rebel and Confederate built their first parallel and began the bombardment. With the Imperial defense weakened, Kroger on October 14, 7 BBY sent two columns to attack the last major remaining Imperial outer defenses. A Rebel column took redoubt #9 and a Confederate column redoubt #10. With these defenses taken, the allies were able to finish their second parallel. With the Confederate artillery closer and more intense than ever, the Imperial situation began to deteriorate rapidly and Needa asked for capitulation terms on the 17th. After two days of negotiation, the surrender ceremony took place on the 19th, with Needa being absent since he claimed to be ill. With the capture of over 8,000 Imperial soldiers, negotiations between the Confederate Systems and the Galactic Empire began, resulting in the Treaty of Independence in 5 BBY.
