  • Humanoids from Barkon IV in Romulan space. Discovered on the fringes of the Empire in 2364, they were annexed within a year. Considered subjects of the Romulan Empire, the Barolians industrial and commercial base is built around supporting the Romulan Empire. Barolian's have a limited interstellar capacity with only a few dozen freighters mainly used for commerce with the Romulan Empire. Several rogue or pirate ships have been sighted. Barolians are humanoids with unusually photosensitive skin and wear grey or brown robes in public. They have the ability to see many infrared frequencies, thus allowing them to work normally in very low light.
  • The Barkonians were a humanoid species from Barkon IV. In 2370, the Barkonian were at a pre-industrial level of development. (TNG: "Thine Own Self") They were a species that could become zombies if they suffered from a specific illness. The IJN Eidolon crew purportedly abducted one in order to find a cure to their zombie illness. (RIS Bouteina: "Eidolon")
  • The Barkonians were a pre-industrial society from Barkon IV. Barkonians were humanoid in appearance, with a distinctive patterned forehead. One of their beliefs was that the basic elements of the universe were rock, fire, sky, and water. These elements were found in every object, person, animal, or anything.
  • First contact with the Barkonians occurred by accident when a Federation probe containing radioactive material crashed on the planet's surface in the year 2370. Lieutenant Commander Data, an android crew member of the starship USS Enterprise, was sent to retrieve the remains, but suffered damages and memory loss while on the surface. He was found wandering around by the magistrate of a Barkonian village and was taken care of in their society, but neither Data nor the Barkonians were able to explain who he was and where he had come from; neither could them recognize the danger of the radioactive material he carried.

Living among the Barkonians, Data was given the name Jayden and was told that he was probably an "Iceman" from the Vellorian Mountains. The radioactive material caused sickness in many of the village inhabitants, who later blamed the stranger for the disease and formed an angry mob to pursue him. At this point, "Jayden" had figured out a cure, and was able to administer it to the village's water supply, so that it would be consumed by the sick. The mob misunderstood his intentions, however, and attacked the android, leaving him for dead. Although he was later recovered and repaired by the Enterprise crew, Data retained no memory of the time he spent on Barkon IV.

In 2370, a Federation deep space probe went off course and crash landed on the planet, causing some Barkonians to suffer the effects of radiation poisoning after exposure to probe fragments. The Barkonians also had their first contact with alien life, when Lieutenant Commander Data was dispatched to retrieve and salvage the probe's components before they could contiminate the planet's biosphere. Damaged by the probe, Data suffered from memory loss, and spent several weeks living among the Barkonians. (TNG: "Thine Own Self" )
