The Taungs, later known as the Mandalorians, were a warlike Near-Human species that dominated the planet Coruscant thousands of years before the rise of Humans. Los taung y las trece naciones nativas humanas, los Batallones de Zhell, terminaron luchando por el control de Coruscant. A pesar de ser casi exterminados por una explosión volcánica, los zhell lograron expulsar a los taung de Coruscant. Debido a los dos años de oscuridad provocados por la ceniza, los taung se llamaron a sí mismos los Guerreros de la Sombra (Dha Werda Verda). Mais au fil des générations, leur espèce déclina et ils commencèrent à recruter des guerriers parmi d'autres espèces, au sein d'un corps d'élite de la planète Mandalore, appelé "Croisés mandaloriens", qui finit par devenir une nationalité à part entière. Au temps de l'Ancienne République, pendant les règnes d'Exar Kun et d'Ulic Qel-Droma, quelques Taungs survivaient encore au milieu des Mandaloriens, mais leur nationalité était devenu plus un mode de vie qu'une race. Mando'ade era uno degli appellativi con cui successivamente ci si riferiva ai Taung, ovvero Figli e Figlie di Mandalore. Riconosciutisi dunque come Mandaloriani, i Taung cominciarono una vera e propria opera di conquista dei pianeti presenti nel loro sistema, iniziando una sorta di crociata rivolta all'esterno del proprio mondo che però non fece altro che portare sull'orlo della crisi le proprie basi. Sotto la guida del Mandaloriano Indomabile, un altro signore della guerra Taung che discendeva dalla tradizione del Primo Mandaloriano, essi cominciarono a mischiarsi con altre specie senzienti, portando così la propria razza ad una graduale trasformazione che avrebbe portato alla costituzione del Mandaloriano così com'è conosciuto oggi. Tale disposizione raggiunse il proprio apice durante le Guerre Mandaloriane, quando l'Ultimo Mandaloriano guidò il proprio popolo contro gli eserciti della Repubblica Galattica. Vicini inizialmente alla vittoria, con l'intervento del Cavaliere Jedi Revan ed i suoi seguaci però la guerra voltò a sfavore dei Taung, culminando con la devastazione del pianeta Malachor V. Durante la guerra essi subirono numerose ed importanti perdite, tanto che verso la fine si pensò che essi avrebbero subito nel proprio destino l'estinzione, ma di sicuro la loro leggenda nonché le loro gesta non sarebbero morte all'interno della cultura mandaloriana, tanto che essi sarebbero stati riconosciuti come i Progenitori.
