I could do this. I found the bear in an open field. The grass reached up to my ankles, and it tickled when it brushed against me. The wind was still. The sun was bright and warm. It was the kind of day I loved, but I couldn't enjoy it, knowing I had to face the bear. My legs were on complete autopilot as I approached the bear, who was sitting down, his back facing me, eating something. Probably his last victim. I gulped. I tiptoed over to the giant bear. His fur was midnight-black and shone in the sun. Suddenly, he turned to face me. His eyes were beady and completely fixed on me. We stood for a minute, staring at each other, each waiting for the other to make a move. I wanted so badly to just dash off, but I knew I couldn't. So instead I took a deep breath and began to speak. "Hi. My name is Jules Kensington. Three years ago, my father died fighting you. You killed him. I just wanted to say that I-" The bear was apparently in no mood for forgiveness speeches. He smacked me in the head with a paw the size of my face. The pain was unbearable. My forehead hurt like it was shot with a bullet. I let out a wail of pain and fell to the ground, defeated. The things that happened next were a complete blur. I could hardly see anything and the sounds echoed and surrounded me. I heard leaves crunching under someone's feet and sticks snapping. "Nick, I- OH MY GOSH! JULES!" I heard my little sister Sofie say, panic and concern in her voice. "IS SHE OKAY?!" my little brother Nick shouted. "NO! SHE'S LYING ON THE GROUND!!!" Sofie screamed. "JULES? JULES?!?!" Nick yelled at me. I tried to yell back, but I just couldn't. My mouth was clamped shut, and my voice was trapped at the back of my throat. I couldn't move. My body was heavy and weighed down. I couldn't see. My eyes were open, but what I could see was a blurry light green blob. "She's dead, I just KNOW she's dead! Why isn't she talking?!" Sofie cried. "SOFIE! IT'S THE BEAR! THE BEAR THAT KILLED DADDY!!" Nick screeched. "WE GOTTA GET IT AWAY FROM HER BEFORE IT EATS HER!!" My sister and brother started screaming and making loud noises to drive the bear away. I heard the bear stomp away, annoyed by the noise. "Jules? Are you okay?" Sofie asked quietly. That's the last thing I heard before I was gone. First I saw myself as a baby. I saw my mom cradling me and my dad kissing my forehead tenderly. I saw my dad throwing a ball with me when I was two. I struggled to catch the ball and wobbled back and forth on my chubby toddler legs. I saw me squeezing Nick tightly to my chest after he was born. My look of confusion when I found out Sofie was a girl and not a boy like Mom said she would be. My face when learning my dad was dead. So much more. I could see everything so clearly, as if it were happening right then. Every minute, every second of my life was flashing through my mind, all in just a blink of an eye. Then I was lifted up. It was like I was steel and the sky was my magnet. I was wearing a flowing milky white gossamer gown that just covered my ankles. My hair floated up around me. I looked at my back. Huge snow-white feathery wings sprouted out of it. The whole thing felt so real that I was sure it wasn't a dream. Just then, a familiar face poked through a cloud. "Sweetie," my dad said, his eyes sparkly with fresh tears and his loving goofy grin on his face. Just seeing his face again, just hearing his voice made my heart leap. I swam through the sky towards him, with so much excitement that it was all I could do not to squeal with happiness. He held me close to him, and just being embraced by him made me feel relaxed and warm inside. His always-present scent of pine trees comforted me. The twinkle in his eyes made my smile even wider than it already was. Having all these things back was almost overwhelming, but it was truly amazing. "You're back," I said, a small tear running down my face. Dad pulled me closer, and I wrapped my arms around him. After a minute, my dad let go and took my hand. "Come on. I have to show you a few things," he said. Dad pulled me up into the clouds. We stepped through the giant pearly gates, and everything hit me at once. The first thing I saw were the colors. There was a rainbow overhead, but instead of seven colors, there were thousands. Every shade imaginable (and some that weren't) were visible in just a glance at the rainbow. Next I noticed the animals. There were tons of species, some of which I had never seen or heard of! Among the hundreds of animals, I noticed one that I had been wanting to see for a long time. I cradled the chipmunk in my hands. "Hey, buddy," I said soothingly. "Look, I've been wanting to say this for a long time... I am so sorry for killing you! It was a total accident. I was just trying to make an invention to spew out delicious acorns... I had no idea the machine poisoned them! I've always wanted to apologize for that, ever since that day. I'm really sorry." The chipmunk rubbed his head against me as if to say 'I forgive you.' "Thanks, buddy," I said, my smile only getting bigger. I set the chipmunk down on the soft cloud floor and looked around some more. Thousands, no, millions of people were walking and flying around. Children were playing, adults were laughing, and everyone was having a great time. I saw a tall tree that looked just like mine. I turned towards my dad. He nodded and smiled. I dashed to the tree quickly and climbed into it. I was instantly incredibly serene. My old blue rug was there, too, except it was clean and new. I sat in the tree for a few moments, listening to birds singing their songs that were even more beautiful in this place than on Earth. Then I grabbed a branch and swung down, landing on the ground with a soft thump. I laughed and ran to my dad. "So, do you like it here?" he asked, ruffling my hair. "No," I said. I let my dad look confused for a minute before I said, "I LOVE it!" "So do I, Jules. Now just hold on a second. You have to try this." My dad glided over to an apple tree and picked off two apples. He floated back over to me. "Here," my dad said, handing me an apple. It was bright red and shiny. I sank my teeth into the fruit. The tart yet sweet flavor of the juice and the crispiness of the apple made it luscious. "These apples are incredible!" I told Dad. "Yes. Yes, they are," he said, biting into his. I wolfed down the rest of my apple in a few bites. "What should we do now, Dad?" I asked him. "Well, Jules... um... as much as I hate to say this... I think you should go back down to Earth now," he said nervously. "What?! But I just got here! And I can't leave you! Don't make me go back," I sobbed. "I know, and I don't want to leave you either, baby. But think about Nick and Sofie! They look up to you, sweetie. They love you. And your mom." "Mom doesn't love me," I muttered, annoyed. "Jules, honey, I know your mom can be a bit... er..." Dad said, fishing for words. "Cruel. Foul. Malicious. Vile," I offered. "Yes, that, but she really does love you. No matter what you think, she really wouldn't trade you for anything." "Do I really have to go back?" I asked, looking up into his eyes. "You do," my dad said sadly. "I don't want to leave you... I can't lose you again," I said, my voice wavering, tears streaming steadily down my face. "I'm not lost, sweetie. I'm always right up here, watching you. So don't do anything bad, because I'll know about it," he said with a wink. "And you'll see me again someday." I hugged him tightly, not wanting to let go. "Bye, Dad. Thank you so much," I choked out through my tears. "Bye, Jules. I love you," he said, giving me one last squeeze. I snapped open my eyes to find my siblings hovering over me. "H... hey, guys," I said quietly, my voice rough. "JULES!" they shouted simultaneously, hugging me so tightly that I could hardly breathe. "I thought you were never gonna come back... we thought we had lost you forever," Sofie said, and I could feel her teardrops on my chest. "You saved my life, guys. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have come back," I said gratefully. "Where were you?" Nick asked, his chubby cheeks pressed up against mine. "Well, it's a long story, but I think you're gonna like it," I said. "I love you too," I whispered, looking into the sky.

  • At Air Temple Island, Pabu approaches a sleeping Naga and starts to play-hunt her tail, biting it in the process. Hearing Pepper groan upon its descent, Naga immediately perks her head and, seeing Korra enthusiastically wave at her, takes off in pursuit of them, with Pabu hanging off her tail. As soon as Pepper lands, Korra jumps off welcomes Naga with open arms; the ecstatic polar bear dog momentarily lifts Korra in the airs with her snout before they start to cuddle. While the three airbending children run up to their parents, with Meelo loudly announcing that they have returned with the Avatar, an excited Bumi, now donning an airbender wingsuit, is the first to greet Korra; running up to her with Bum-Ju in tow, he engulfs her in a bearhug and tells her that both of them missed her. Tenzin compliments his children on their work, and Meelo asks if he could have his tattoos in exchange. To Pema's amusement, Tenzin immediately declines and drops the subject. He approaches Korra and hugs her, welcoming her home. Asking them what happened in Zaofu, a downcast Korra glances to the side, and Opal tells him Kuvira, who had brought her entire army, has captured her mother, father, and brothers. Korra adds that she thought she was strong enough to defeat Kuvira but now feels like a failure. Tenzin tries to comfort her, saying she was not expected to face Kuvira alone, and ends by saying they are all just glad to have her back. Bumi asks Opal where Bolin is, not believing he would still be on Kuvira's side. Opal answers that she believes he, after seeing Kuvira's actions against her family, would abandon the Earth Empire army but admits that they do not know where he is. Meanwhile, an exhausted Bolin, panting with exertion, carries a disheveled-looking Varrick on his back through a forest. He suggests that Varrick walks on his own for a while, to which Varrick responds that, upon his escape from the Republic City Prison, Zhu Li carried him twenty miles in one day, even after she sprained her ankle. Angrily reminding Varrick that Zhu Li is not there, Bolin dumps him on the ground, where he remains. He despondently tells Bolin to leave him for the worms to eat, believing himself to be deserving of death. Bolin scolds Varrick for wanting to take the easy way out and reminds him that he is responsible for the creation of the spirit-energy weapon, which has the capacity to cause mass destruction. Varrick yells back that he does not want to be reminded of it, declaring himself to be a horrible person for having invented it in the first place. Bolin, calming down, tells Varrick that both of them were fooled into doing Kuvira's "dirty work" and that they have a duty to return to Republic City to warn the citizens of the impending threat the weapon poses. Varrick, inspired by Bolin's speech, takes his hand and gets to his feet, telling him that he has a way with words. He even offers to carry Bolin for a while. Bolin, relieved, jumps on Varrick's back, and Varrick, struggling under Bolin's weight, takes one slow, painful step but immediately triggers a booby trap on the ground, and they are pulled high into the air. As they come to rest hanging from a tree limb, trapped in a hanging net, Bolin shouts in disbelief to nobody in general. Asami sits in a waiting area at a restaurant in Republic City, reading a magazine with a Future Industries advertisement on the back cover. Korra walks up to her and says that she hopes Asami has not been waiting long. Immediately putting her magazine away, Asami stands up and embraces Korra tightly, telling her that she "only" waited three years. They both tell each other how good it is to see the other again, and Asami compliments Korra's new hairdo, earning herself a compliment about her general appearance in return from a blushing Korra. Asami leads Korra into the restaurant, where Mako stands leaning against a wooden pillar near a booth, waiting for them. Mako and Korra embrace briefly, but their reunion is cut short by the sudden appearance of Prince Wu, who immediately begins flirting with Korra, much to her dismay. He leads her into the booth and orders for everyone. Meanwhile, Asami and Mako seat themselves opposite from Korra and Wu. Asami, in a heated whisper, asks Mako why Wu is with him, to which Mako replies unhappily that he could not get Wu to leave him alone. He adds that Wu promised to behave cordially, but at that moment, Wu leans over to Korra and asks her to enter the Avatar State so he can see her eyes glow. He is put out by Korra's immediate refusal, and Asami takes control of the situation by asking Korra if she can enter the Avatar State again, telling her she was worried when Korra told to her she could not. Before Korra can answer, Mako, suddenly suspicious, asks how Asami knew that. The two women share a look, and Korra confesses that she wrote letters to Asami while she was absent and asked her not to tell Mako and Bolin, a revelation that deeply frustrates the firebender. Korra apologizes for not staying in touch and changes the subject, asking Asami and Mako what has been going on with them. Asami tells them that she has visited her father in prison for the first time, as he had been writing her letters and she finally felt ready to try and forgive him. When Korra wonders aloud if she can trust Hiroshi, fearing that he might try to manipulate Asami again, Asami snaps back that she knows what her own father is capable of and that Korra, having vanished for three years, has no right to act like she knows what is best for Asami. Feeling conscious about her absence, Korra says that she never planned to be gone for three years; it was just something she needed to do in order to heal. Wu interrupts the trio's tense exchange by announcing he needs to go to the bathroom and snaps his fingers to spur Mako to action, desiring him to stand guard. Mako adamantly refuses, telling Wu to go on his own "for once". In the bathroom, an attendant offers to freshen Wu up with a spritz of cologne. Wu requests a double dose, and the attendant covers his mouth with his towel before spraying Wu with knockout gas. Yelling to Mako for help, Wu drops unconscious to the floor. Back in the Earth Empire, Bolin and Varrick are still trapped in the net. Failing to break out, Bolin notes that he wished Pabu was there with him, as the fire ferret could have chewed through the ropes for them. Varrick, feeling melancholy, tells him that Zhu Li could have done the same thing. That moment, they are found by a group of escaped prisoners, who were responsible for placing the trap. Bolin asks them to release them, but Ahnah, the leading woman of the group, wonders why they would free a couple of "lowly Earth Empire soldiers". Varrick objects this assessment and tells them they were part of Kuvira's inner circle. Bolin is quick to emphasize the past tense of that loyalty and reiterates his request for freedom. Baraz, the male leader, says he has a plan for "Kuvira's top men" and cuts them down using his firebending. Back at the restaurant, the food is served, and Mako wonders about Wu's longer-than-usual absence. Commenting that the prince is not one to miss out on lunch, he goes to check on him in the bathroom. Korra and Asami stand outside the bathroom, and Korra, noticing the bathroom attendant walking past with a cart full of laundry bags, decides to follow him. As he dumps the laundry into the back of a van, she asks him if he has seen Wu, and he tells her he has not. His casual denial is debunked by a semiconscious Wu rolling out of the laundry bags. The attendant attacks Korra by surprise, launching her against the ceiling with his earthbending, and jumps into the van. Mako and Asami come running outside, and Korra, having regained her bearings, shouts that Wu has been taken in the van now speeding away with screeching tires. Telling them to get the car, she goes after them on foot. The van leaves the alley next to the hotel, and Korra bends a fissure in its way, but the van jumps over it and keeps driving. Asami and Mako pull up next to her with a sports car; Korra jumps in, and Asami speeds off after the van. Asami expertly swerves between the other cars and quickly gains on the van. However, the van turns down another alley and the attendant bends up a wall, blocking the way. Asami continues straight, and Mako tells her to turn right at the next block. She disregards his suggestion, saying she knows the streets better than he does, having built some of them. Driving up a bridge, they catch up to the van again, riding parallel to it on the elevated street. Korra stands up in the car, jumps with airbending onto the van, and metalbends the roof open, but finds the van to be empty save for the bathroom attendant, who is now driving. She tears him away from the driving seat with her airbending and stops the van next to a couple of spirit vines. Korra drags the attendant out of the van as the others join her and tells them the attendant was the only one left inside the truck. Mako grabs the attendant and slams him into the van, demanding to know where the prince is. The driver answers that Wu is halfway to Kuvira. A police car comes and Mako instructs the driver to relay the news of Wu's kidnapping to Lin Beifong. The car leaves and Asami and Mako are worried about where Wu could be. Korra touches the spirit vines, using them to search for Wu's energy; catching a glimpse of him, she tells the others Wu is being taken to the train station. Asami wonders how she knows that, and Korra tells them she will explain on the way, jumping in the car and telling her to drive. Back in the Earth Empire, Bolin and Varrick's captors have the two bound as the waterbenders of the group refill their water skins by a river. Bolin asks what firebenders and waterbenders were doing in one of Kuvira's re-education camps, and Baraz and his friend, Ahnah, clarify that it is more of a prison, one to which Kuvira had been sending anyone not of Earth Kingdom origin. They are confused to realize the two of them are not aware of what she was doing, as they were a part of her inner circle, but Bolin reiterates that they were only part of the inner circle for about a day. Varrick demands to know where they are going, and the escapees explain that they intend to use the two of them to get past the security detail at the border; only then will they consider letting them go. Varrick shoots Bolin a quick look, and as the former dives away from his captors toward the latter, Bolin knocks them down with earthbending, then lavabends to separate them from the fugitives. He apologizes to the fugitives for what Kuvira has done, but restates that he and Varrick are no longer aligned with Kuvira; Varrick adds that they cannot risk crossing the border checkpoint without himself or Bolin being recognized. Baraz tells them that the checkpoint is the only way out, as the wall surrounding it is constantly patrolled. Ahnah objects to their allying with Bolin and Varrick, telling Baraz that she does not trust them, but she relents when Baraz reasons that if Bolin could have buried them in lava, killing them, if he wanted. Having heard Baraz's argument and plan, Bolin chooses to trust him out of necessity, and asks where the border crossing is. Back in Republic City, as Team Avatar drives the streets, Mako asks Korra how she was able to discern Wu's location. She explained that she learned it from Toph Beifong herself, who learned to connect with the outside world using spirit vines in the Foggy Swamp, to her friends' amazement. Arriving at the train station, they split up to find Wu. Meanwhile, Bolin and Varrick lead the escapees to the border checkpoint, telling the guards that they captured the group of fugitives and are taking them to a secure facility. The checkpoint guard asks where the prisoners escaped from, and Bolin names Camp 14, which, the guard promptly points out, is in the wrong direction from them. Bolin lies that he is acting on Kuvira's orders, and the guard asks for his transfer papers. Varrick, pulling the guards' focus away from the papers, promptly goes into a tirade, ranting about all the wild animals he has had to face (one of which, he asserts, ate the papers), his poor hygiene, and the size of his blisters, and threatens to report the guard if he does not let them pass. The guard finally acquiesces, signaling the other guards to open the gate; as they are walking through, however, Bolin and Varrick are recognized as wanted deserters based on several wall-poster mugshots, and the Earth Empire soldiers quickly surround them, sparking a fight. Varrick sneaks away from the melee; spotting a generator inside the guard station, he manages to fashion a makeshift electromagnetic pulse device, disabling the guards' mecha suits. Varrick subsequently calls to Bolin to flee with him, but the latter refuses to allow Baraz's group to be captured, and uses lavabending to drive the soldiers away from them. Baraz, knowing that Bolin did not need to come back for them, thanks him for his help. At the Central City Station, Korra again uses Toph's spirit-vine technique to find the train Wu is on. Team Avatar is able to board it as it departs; as they pass through the passenger compartment, Mako asks Korra if she is sure that Wu is on the train. Irked, Korra yells at him for not keeping a proper watch on Wu, as was his job, unaware that Kuvira's agents have overheard them. As Mako and Korra make their way into the baggage car, they find Wu stuffed into a suitcase, but two of Kuvira's agents attack them. Korra deflects their metalbending attacks before airbending them into the roof of the car; as two more agents approach from opposite ends of the train car, Korra shuts the doors and metalbends a hole into the roof. Wu refuses to go outside, foring Korra to airbend him out; Kuvira's agents promptly begin to metalbend the roof of the adjourning car, peeling it back toward the Avatar's group and intending to trap them between themselves. Seeing no other option, Korra yells at her friends to jump over the side, which they do; Korra airbends them roughly, but unharmed, to the ground. Once safe, Wu emphatically thanks Mako for saving him, stating that he will probably get a raise; the latter insists he thank Korra for his freedom. In exchange for her efforts, Wu offers to take Korra on a date, and again, she bluntly refuses. She turns to Mako and Asami and the three of them turn nostalgic, remarking that their adventure was "just like old times". They share a group hug, in which Wu tries to include himself, but Korra holds him back at arm's length. She asks what they should do about Wu, thinking it to be too dangerous to return him to the hotel, a sentiment Wu wholly agrees with. Mako decides to hide him at Asami's mansion, where his family has been staying since the fall of Ba Sing Se. Upon bringing him there, Mako's grandmother Yin swoons upon seeing Wu, who desperately runs to find a bathroom, having been unable to relieve himself all day. Bolin and Varrick's group, having left the border behind, reaches the shore of the Mo Ce Sea. Bolin apologizes to the escapees for what Kuvira has done to them, and Ahnah offers to give him and Varrick a boat ride north, toward Republic City. Varrick, noting the dingy, rickety-looking boat they are using, initially declines the offer, but a nudge from Bolin prompts him to change his statement. Having traveled with a portion of the army to the Foggy Swamp, Baatar Jr. uses a probe to test the spirit vines of the banyan-grove tree, and determines that they are more powerful than the samples taken from Republic City. When he relays this information to Kuvira, who stands near him, she orders her men, equipped with mecha suits, to harvest every last vine, leaving nothing behind.

My father remained in the area until my teenage years and then relocated to his home country of South Africa. He called me right before my 18th birthday and then I never heard from him again. Over the years I have felt numerous emotions..anger, hate, hurt, love, etc. I didn't even know if he was dead or alive. During the moments I missed my father I searched for him online with no luck. Finally 2 years ago I decided to forgive him in order to move on with my life. In Sept 2006, I decided to email the South African embassy, but got no results. On February 17, 2007, I watched the Secret. On February 23, 2007, I received a voicemail message from a cousin from South Africa who said she was visiting the US on business and wanted to meet me. On March 2, 2007, my cousin came to visit. She said she had been looking for me for 2 years. For his own reasons, my father never gave her our contact information. Nevertheless, on March 3, 2007, I spoke with my father on the phone. He was happy to hear from me and would like to reunite soon. I have aunts, uncles and cousins who are awaiting our visit. I have already made a vision board which includes pictures of South Africa. I am happy and grateful that I will travel to South Africa by May 2007!!! The first week after I watched The Secret I was excited about getting parking spaces and dates!! Who would have thought I was going to reunite with my father? I didn't even have him on my vision board. But he was always in my thoughts. I was a believer in The Secret from the beginning, but this reunion truly makes me believe that anything is possible. H S

  • Panting, Strongheart surveyed the blood-streaked ground. The battle had been hard but swift. Within a few minutes, the GreenClan cats were sent packing. Now, the Hidden cats looked at each other over the messy battleground. With a cry of joy, Silverbreeze hurled herself at Reedfur. A smile spread across Strongheart's face as he bounded over to his friend and licked him on the ear. "You're okay." "Yep, looks like it," Reedfur said with surprising cheeriness. Relief flowed through Strongheart as he took in each member of the mission patrol: Wetstream, Brightsong, Cinderdapple, and Ivyfleet. The latter looked incredibly tired and sad; her normally bright sea-blue eyes were dulled and grayed with exhaustion. And not just physical exhaustion, he knew. "What happened to Ivyfleet?" he whispered to Reedfur. The black tom grimaced. "It's a long story. I'll tell you on the way back." Silverbreeze nudged him gently. "We should make sure everyone's ready to go." With a nod, Strongheart turned to face the others. He took them in quickly. There were several cuts and bruises to be seen, and Cinderdapple was limping slightly; he wasn't sure if they could make the journey back right away. Before he could ask them though, Brightsong cut in. "What are we waiting for? Let's get back home." A cheer that left no doubt about the verdict raised up. Strongheart grinned at his friends. "Well, I guess that settles it. We're going back to the Tunnels right away." Side by side, the three best friends took lead of the group. Silverbreeze and Strongheart listened intently as Reedfur poured out all the events the secret patrol had faced: meeting Flowerburst and Spidertalon, crossing the river, and finally, Tornadoheart's sacrifice and death. When he was done, Strongheart remained silent for a minute. "I can't believe he did that..." he trailed off helplessly. "We certainly misjudged him," Jaywalker mewed quietly. After a few moments of silence, filled with tangible sorrow, Reedfur said, "So, how have things been in the Tunnels?" "Well, we had a few arguments over things," Strongheart said helplessly, not wanting his friend to know what kind of chaos had enused following his departure. "It's hard to get along with so many cats all packed in the same place." Reedfur nodded understandingly, green eyes attentive. "But we kind of sorted out," he explained. "I mean, when we heard you guys were in trouble, you wouldn't believe how worried everyone was. It was hard picking just a few cats to come. Finchnose wanted to come, but she had to stay back because she's medicine cat, and we needed her there." Reedfur's expression was warm. "That's okay. I can't wait to see her though." For a little while, they all stared at each other. Each of them knew what was coming, but none of them wanted to be the first to bring it up. Finally, Strongheart said, "We need to talk." "Yes, we do." Nevertheless, she couldn't stop the tide of darkness that washed over her sleeping mind. When it cleared, she was standing in a large canyon. She recognized it; the last time she'd been here, her friends were locked away in a poisoning chamber, and she had been desperate to save them. It had been when they had discovered Aquatail's treachery. As if on cue, a familiar voice came from behind her. "Well, well, well. Looks like an old friend has stopped by." Finchnose closed her eyes. "Aquatail." The ebony she-cat slunk down a small rocky rise and sat down in front of her. She stank of Dark Fire, blood, and evil. Finchnose's nose smarted at the terrible combination of smells; the made her want to throw up. Instead, she said, "What are you doing? What do you want?" "I've risen in GreenClan ranks while you've been off playing," Aquatail said. Her hiss was as low and dangerous as a snake's, and it sent shudders down Finchnose's spine. "Viperstar admired me for my work. And now that Tornadoheart has foolishly turned tail, he realizes the true worth of a spy." "Tornadoheart turned tail?" Finchnose repeated in disbelief. The she-cat waved her tail impatiently. "He's dead because of it, the fool. And you will be soon too. Beware, Finchnose. You and your friends' days are numbered." Breathing hard, Finchnose clambered out of her nest. In the inky blackness, she could make out the sleeping shapes of the rest of her friends. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she wished desperately that Strongheart, Silverbreeze, and Reedfur were here. Their presence made everything so much easier. Suddenly, the enclosed darkness of the Chamber was too much for her to bear. She ran headlong out the moss curtain, down a hall, and slammed into a very surprised Bramblepath. "Finchnose! What are you doing up so late?" "I couldn't sleep," she admitted, still panting, half from her run and half from fear. The tabby cat smiled understandingly, her green eyes soft with sympathy. "I get it. Sometimes it's just too much, isn't it? I had guard duty; Angelcloud relieved me, but I couldn't go back to sleep, so I was just walking." Realizing that she had no one else to turn to now, Finchnose said quietly, "I had a bad dream. A warning from StarClan. In it, I saw Aquatail, and she said that our days were numbered. That she had risen in GreenClan ranks. Bramblepath, she holds a solid grudge towards us. She'd have the motives and means to exact some real damage. And..." Suddenly, Finchnose paled. The ground swung out from under her. Of course! How stupid could she be? "She knows where the Tunnels are." Panic tinged her voice. "Oh Bramblepath, what shall we do?" She was in near hysterics by now. Soothingly, Bramblepath laid her tail across Finchnose's back. The medicine cat relaxed under her touch. "It's okay. There's not much we can do except hope that the patrols get back before Aquatail can plot an attack. If she attacks while Strongheart and the others are out, I don't know how we'll hold our ground." Knowing she was right, Finchnose sent up a silent prayer. As the sun rose over the horizon, Silverbreeze yawned and stretched, feeling her cramped muscles pop and her claws sink into the warm earth. Around her, her friends were breaking camp as well. "Who's going to hunt?" she asked. Frowning, Strongheart glanced out over the plains. They had camped out at the border between woods and grasslands, the same as they had last time, when they were heading back to the Tunnels after the incident in the canyon. Now Silverbreeze's paws ached just as much to be back in the Tunnels. She was shocked at how much the Tunnels had come to mean to her. Before, she had just regarded them as the only place where they could have their headquarters, but now she had come to think of them of as much of a home as BreezeClan had been. It was strange how things worked out like that. "Can we just try to get back to the Tunnels as quickly as possible, and then eat there?" Wetstream asked. "I can't wait to get back there." Silverbreeze grinned. "I'm fine with that if the others are. What do you think guys? Was last night's dinner enough?" "I think so," Cinderdapple said. "Besides, I really need to have this paw looked at by Finchnose, so the quicker we get home the better." The others murmured agreement, so they struck off at a quick pace without bothering with eating. Padding along next to Reedfur, his fur brushing her shoulder, Silverbreeze felt much better. All of the worry and exasperation of the last few days faded away. And yet they still had things to discuss. The main subject at the table was what they wanted for the Hidden group now. Silverbreeze had told Reedfur - without mentioning Strongheart or Bramblepath's names, but the ginger tom had owed up that it was him anyway - that some cats wanted to take the offensive in the battle, while others thought it was more important to protect the Tunnels. Reedfur had listened to all this with his normal level-headedness, and said he needed time to think about it. Now, they awaited his opinion. "Well..." he said softly, as if not wanting to break the precious silence of the dawn. "I think we should wait till we get back, and involve everyone in our vote. I mean, everyone will be affected, so..." "Good idea," she said. "Now I hope we can get there soon." Strongheart nodded in agreement. "I'm going to see how Cinderdapple is doing," he said, dropping back. That left Silverbreeze alone with Reedfur, a thought that both thrilled and terrified her. Not knowing what else to do to phrase her joy at having him back, she buried her face in his shoulder and murmured into his familiar-scented black fur, "I missed you." His chin rested gently on her head for a minute. "I missed you too." Their gazes locked for a moment, and then Strongheart was back, channeling a void between them with his bulk. For some reason, Silverbreeze felt guilty whenever Strongheart caught her and Reedfur together, as if she was doing something wrong. It made no sense, she knew, but she couldn't help it. Now, the tom's amber eyes flicked over her briefly, unreadable. He didn't say anything though. With that, Silverbreeze pointed her toes towards the seemingly endless plains, watching for the spires of rock that hid the Tunnels. Watching for her home. "There!" The word sent a blast of relief through Reedfur. He broke into a swift run, legs eating up the ground. His friends did the same. "Just warning you, we have a new addition. His name is Ducksplash. He's a bit cranky, but his heart is in a good place." Cinderdapple managed to pant all this as she limped alongside him. He nodded to show he'd heard her, then skidded to a stop in front of the boulders. As one, he and the others stepped into the Tunnels. Cries echoed through the darkness, and seconds later the hall was filled with rejoicing cats, and calls of, "You're back! You're safe!" Finchnose leaped at him, and he wrapped his tail around her tightly. Then, she was off again in a flit, hurrying towards Cinderdapple and clucking her tongue like a mother hen. Hiding a smile, Reedfur turned to Bramblepath and Birdsong. Both she-cats were smiling broadly. "It's good to see you guys again." "Same," Birdsong said. She was never one to give into too much emotion, but there was geniuine happiness in her sharp amber eyes. "Reedfur?" Turning, he found Finchnose next to him, the look in her hazel eyes plaintive. "I need to talk to you guys." He, Strongheart, and Silverbreeze followed her to a secluded part of the tunnel and waited expectantly as she sat down in front of them. "Aquatail is back." "What?" This was the last thing Reedfur had been expecting. Even his normally calm interior couldn't stop from a little jolt of shock. Finchnose nodded. "She's risen in GreenClan ranks, and she wants revenge on us. I found out in a dream." Plainly, he could see the others were on the verge of pure panic, so he cut in, reminding himself that he was the sensible one. They needed him to calm them down. "Well, this settles it then." They looked at him as if he were crazy. "We're taking the defensive. We need to stay here and protect ourselves from Aquatail. She knows where the Tunnels are, which means we need to guard them night and day. Everyone stays here." "Agreed. But for now... We're together. And that's all that matters." Silverbreeze placed a paw on Silverbreeze's, the other on Strongheart's, and linked her tail with Reedfur's. Purring, he leaned into the circle, breathing in the scent that was his friends. It was the best reunion he'd ever had. With his friends by his side, he knew he could face whatever disasters came. And he knew they would come. But he'd be ready.

  • The sun beat down on Ihoni Skychaser as she trudged up the packed dirt road. Sweat gathered in the small folds of her body, slid along her fur and dripped. It was mercilessly warm, but in the body of the horned bear, it wasn't as bad as it could have been. She panted quietly as she followed the road from Camp Taurajo. It helped to keep her cool, and she made use of the natural mechanism happily. It had been a start, feeling the mind of a bear where her own should have been clear and rational. The druids had said it would be like that, though, and so, instead of fighting it, Ihoni learned to operate within it. She was pleased to learn that the mind of a bear was blissfully uncomplicated. Eat, sleep, rest, walk. If she concentrated, she could make it think of other things, like the fact that the Tauren in the camp were friends, not food, or that it would be a long walk to the Crossroads where she had been sent. Now, though, Ihoni was content to let it wander freely, only pausing now and again to nudge the great, lumbering body north. She drifted in and out of pointed consciousness, happy to let her Tauren mind wander as the bear continued on. When the shape appeared on the road ahead, the bear edged off it in a survival instinct as old as time. Ihoni came back to herself quickly and stared through the bear's eyes. The Tauren walked past with the long, loping stride of a man on patrol. Ihoni recognized that stride; it was the kind of long-legged lope that let Tauren walk for miles without pausing. It ate up ground without exhausting energy, something the wanderers had learned long before Ihoni's time. She turned, tracing his steps. As she came up behind him, sensitive nose picking up the scent of oiled metal and sweat, a gnome darted past. The bear growled instinctively, growled again as the gnome vanished along the road and the Tauren turned. He studied her as she circled him. "Can I help you, druid?" he asked politely. Help her? Help her! She'd show him help. Ihoni padded so close that she could smell the soap he'd used earlier in the day. She bared her teeth, reared back on her hind legs, and let the full of her heavy, muscled weight fall against him. He yelled as he hit the ground. "What the--?!" He fell quiet as she stood over him. She dropped her face to within inches of his, peeled back her lips from her wicked, fish-tearing teeth, and dropped her cold, wet nose against his cheek. She went "whuffle" with a breath, smearing her cold nose all over his face. The bear lumbered back, and with the breathtaking speed of transformation, Ihoni stepped free of the dust that surrounded her Tauren body. Her smile stretched from ear to lifted ear. Roshanar Skychaser pulled himself to his feet, his eyes wide. "Ihoni?" She beamed. "Hello!" "Ihoni!" He reached her in a single stride and pulled her into his arms. She nestled in to the tight hug with a laugh. "What are you doing out here? And a druid, no less!" He whistled over her head. "Does Beram know?" She hesitated. "Yes?" At his look she added carefully, "He knows I came to be with you." "Ah, I see." He sighed. "'Honi, why did you leave Thunder Bluff? It's dangerous out here." Ihoni picked at the heavy leather belt around her waist. Although she knew a lecture was unavoidable, she wasn't ready for it so soon. She sighed at the leather, unconsciously mimicking his own sound. "I know it is. I want to experience it for myself, I'm not a calf anymore." "What if something happens to you?" "Then I'll learn," she said stubbornly. "Shan, I want to learn!" "I've been out here," he replied, equally as stubborn. "You could die." "Then I'll die knowing I was trying what I wanted to do," she shot back. Her face crumpled, tears gathering in her eyes. "You got the chance, how come I can't?" He closed his eyes, hid the answering shine there. "What if I didn't want that chance?" She gestured wildly. "Well, I do! Am I supposed to run back home and live the life you wanted, while you live the one I want? That's not fair!" He shook his head slowly. "Please don't send me back!" she pleaded, her words all but falling over themselves as she hurried to get them out. "I told him that I was going to find you because you're our brother and I didn't want to get married only he said you weren't, so I went to do it anyway and ran away because I don't want to be a shaman, and you are." Roshanar's expression glazed over. "What?" Her jaw set mulishly, and she raised her head. "I said I won't go back." His chuckle was warm, sudden, and soothing. "Okay, Ehawe, I know that look. Come talk with me." He searched around them, and spying a wide, shady tree, he led her to it. She balked, her eyes suddenly razor-sharp. "Who is Ehawe?" "What?" "You called me Ehawe," she said again. "Who is she?" Roshanar cleared his throat. "Oh! Ah, Miss Ehawe is a druid, too. A friend." He sat on the ground without worry for his armor, and she followed suit. Before she could explore any further, he asked, "What have you been doing?" She thought about it. Explaining everything just seemed so terribly messy right now... She sighed. "I did some things for Bloodhoof Village, and then they sent me here. I have to go somewhere called the Crossroads." "Where did you go for two weeks?" Again, she hesitated. Had he known she was gone? Who had told him? More, why didn't he try to find her? She picked at the grass beneath her fingers and said in a small voice, "Camp Narache." She pressed on before he could, "Greatmother Hawkwind and Chief Hawkwind took me in and helped me, so you can't tell Beram or else I'll--" What would she do? She shook her head. "You can't." "Okay, okay," he said, laughing lightly. "I won't tell Beram. Why did you choose to become a druid?" Grass crumbled beneath her fingers, dry and straw-like from the heat. Abandoning the near-dead blades, she turned to poking holes in the dry dirt instead. "Being a shaman was hard." At his look, she smiled a rueful, tiny smile. "I felt so small compared to all the other shaman. They were so good, and I felt so tiny..." "Aw, 'Honi." Roshanar reached over and put an arm tightly around her shoulders. For the first time in a long time, Ihoni felt better. She smiled up at him as he said, "You're not small at all. Look at you! On your own, and a druid!" "Beram doesn't like druids." There wasn't much either of them could say to that; it was true. Beram didn't trust them. Then again... "They have elves," she added with an expression of dislike. "Everywhere." "Well, you'll have to get used to that," he said. "You're a druid now. And if I always did what Beram wanted me to do, well... Imagine what I'd be doing?" She could. In her imagination, Roshanar would still be home, would never have left. She looked down at her fingers, dusty with the bone-dry earth. "I suppose. What have you been doing, anyway?" The sun passed overhead as they spoke. Roshanar told of his time with the Night Vanguard, and she listened intently with rapt interest. She laughed as he spoke of the Kodo Wrestler, and he pointedly outlined the dangers of the world outside of the bluffs. She ignored it. "And there's the zeppelins," he continued. "I bet you've never seen those! They fly through the air with machines and balloons." She gaped. "Flying machines? In the air?" She winced. "Do they ever crash?" He shrugged. "It's not unheard of, but I've never seen it." Her heart started to thud unhappily in her chest. She shifted, shaking her head. "Oh. That's very helpful, thank you." "I thought you said you were ready to face danger?" "When I said 'danger', Roshanar Skychaser," she replied severely, "I didn't think you meant flying machines thousands of leagues in the sky!" "'Honi," Roshanar said with a stern look. "Am I going to have to send you back?" She smiled radiantly. "You can't. You said you wouldn't!" Smug triumph filled her face as he snorted. "So I did." "Besides, I'm not a calf anymore," she said again, with a thrust to her jaw. "I can handle it! And I'll be with you. I'll cook and clean your tent and you'll never regret it!" He winced. "I hope." She grabbed his hooves and tried to shake them, unsuccessfully. "You'll be proud of me, Shan, you'll see. I'll make you proud." "I already am," he answered with a rueful smile. "Now, I better return to my patrol. Should you be off to your--where is it?" "Ah!" She leapt to her feet and brushed the dust off from her leather pants. "I have to go talk to someone named Sera. Sergra. Srega." She pinkened beneath her dusty hide. "An orc at the Crossroads." His laugh rumbled out of his chest and wrapped around her like a comforting blanket. Ihoni smiled with happy relief. "I'm sure you'll find her," he said, amused. "I live in Orgrimmar now. Will you come there when you're done?" "Okay," she agreed readily. "Oh, and before I go..." She took two steps closer to where he sat, drew back her hand, and thumped him solidly on the chest. It went 'clang'. She tucked her hands behind her as he stared in surprise, discreetly shaking out the sting that went all the way to her elbow. "Four years!" she yelled. "Four years, you never even wrote! Not one letter! No word!" The humor drained from his face, and he looked suddenly sad. "I'm sorry, 'Honi. I'll make it up to you." "It's all right." She straightened her leather vest and grinned. "I wouldn't have written back anyway, then. I was upset. I'm glad to have found you, Shan." He rose, and again, he wrapped his thick arms solidly around her. She burrowed in against his armor and felt a rather startling urge to purr. She wasn't sure she knew how, so she settled for a sigh. "Missed you too," he said over the sound. "Be careful." "I will," she said easily, and wasn't sure if she'd be able to or not. But she left it at that, setting off again down the road. She turned to wave, walking backwards. "Earthmother bless you!" she called. His shadow mimicked his wave, and her brother turned toward Camp Taurajo. Ihoni hummed as she followed the dusty road.
