The Birmingham franchise, whose nickname is never revealed, joined The League in 1937, when Judge Walker was forced to sell his interests in The League. • Birmingham was founded in 1871, just after the American Civil War, as an industrial enterprise. It was named after Birmingham, one of Britain's major industrial cities. Through the middle of the 20th century, Birmingham was the primary industrial center of the Southern United States. The astonishing pace of Birmingham's growth through the turn of the century earned it the nicknames "The Magic City" and "The Pittsburgh of the South". Much like Pittsburgh in the north, Birmingham's major industries were iron and steel production.
  • It is a city steeped in industrial heritage and generated wealth through this. The vast array of industries and factories within the city resulted in vast slums being constructed close to the city and the factories. It expanded at a rapid rate, requiring it to absorb massive amounts of surrounding land. Industry died down during the early 20th century but still retained a buzz.

  • Most of Birmingham is liberal and welcoming to ethnic or religious minorities, they are also welcoming if you don't believe in any religion. Unfortunately the Muslims are not always as accepting as the other people. In some parts of Birmingham anyone who says a bad word about Muslims risks having angry threatening looks in his/her direction. Some Muslims respect Free speech but by no means all. Intolerant Muslims think it is right for them to impose their beliefs and values where they can. The problem exists primarily in areas with significant Muslim population and Birmingham residents outside these areas may not know of the trouble. Two men decided on a sponsored charity walk wearing very little, they expected no trouble and brought their wives and Children. When these nearly nude walkers went through Sparkhill, a Muslim area they were surprised at the reaction. The walkers needed a Police escort after they were pelted with eggs, stones and threatened, their children were badly upset. Unfortunately less liberal Muslims do not consistently respect the beliefs and values of those who disagree with them, then their critics are accused of Racism. By no means all Birmingham Muslims are like this but a small number can be intimidating.

Residents and local councillors feel that the site on St Vincent Street is not suitable for the new Birmingham Aquatic and Leisure Centre and have earmarked the Ladywood Arts and Leisure Centre as the ideal replacement. Speaking at a public meeting last night, organised by the city council’s planning committee, it was clear that residents wanted the complex in the area – but just not on that site. The increase in traffic, the noise impact, design issues and the loss of open space were all issues of concern. “It is very sad that we have to oppose this site because we have been campaigning for a swimming pool for many years in this area,” said Ladywood Councillor Carl Rice (Lab). “With the National Indoor Arena, Broad Street, and Symphony Hall right on our doorstep, transport cannot cope. “If this goes ahead it will be absolutely horrendous – there will be absolute chaos. “If we could change the site perhaps we could all unite and support this move and help our kids become successful swimmers.” Residents were able to voice their concerns ahead of the planning application which is expected to be decided before Christmas. Chairman of the nearby St Marks Estate Resident Group, Michael Jones, said: “We welcome this with open arms, however we do feel that the wrong site has been chosen. “Parking in the area is terrible already especially when there are events at the NIA. If it was to go ahead it would just make it worse. “I think the planning committee should have a formal walk around the area to see what we have to endure. Then they would realise that the BALC should be built on another site that would be able to cope with everything that such a magnificent site needs.’’ Earlier this month it was revealed that the construction for the proposed site close to the NIA will not be completed before the London Olympics because the city council cannot find enough money to meet the tight timetable. Birmingham will host the US track and field team and the Jamaican athletics team, but an attempt to provide facilities for the Chinese swimming squad failed. In the current proposals it is stated that the multi-million pound investment will be able to provide major international events such as the Commonwealth Games, but local resident Graham Botley said this was simply not the case. “The prospect of the Commonwealth Games coming to Birmingham is nil,” he said. “The earliest possible time for the Games to be held here would be 2022 and anyway the facility is not adequate to host an international event. The best we could hope for is a national event, so the proposals need to change because they are misleading.”

It is one of the few places in the UK to have Sharia Law. It is one of many English city centres to be designed by Adolf Hitler, through clever use of bombing areas he didn't like. When this failed and he lost the war, the Adolf got his revenge by designing nightmare concrete buildings, utterly miserable public transport and sadistic traffic systems. For this reason Birmingham has been designated an IKEA World Heritage Site. The city's reputation was forged as a powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, a fact which led to Birmingham being known as "the workshop of the world" or the "city of a thousand trades". People from Birmingham are known as 'Brummies', a term derived from the city's nickname of Brum. This comes in turn from the city's dialect name, Brummagem, which is derived from an earlier name of the city, 'Bromwicham'. There is a distinctive Brummie dialect (distinct vocabulary and syntax) and accent (way of speaking), both of which differ from those of the adjacent Black Country.
