  • Amir Alhabi was the unfortunate soul whose American Dream transitioned into the long goodnight, when he was selected as a patsy by a group of "patriots" in need of a Middle Eastern scapegoat for their terrorist attack. His body is the eponymous "Setup" of the selfsame episode, and as his story unfolds, it becomes clear that this was a highly intelligent, hard-working family man, the epitome of the values his killers claim to represent. The perceived threat level jumps exponentially, and there is suddenly cause to fear a WMD.

Amir has a wife, Nazihah and a baby daughter, and was in business, as a cabbie, with his cousin Jamal. In order to supplement his income, since he owned his own medallion, Amir also rented out shifts in his cab to Kevin McCann, another cabbie, who worked around Amir's own use. Amir, however, was not a simple immigrant, if such even exists, and as Beckett and Castle delve into his past, they discover another, very different, life - that of an extremely accomplished Syrian nuclear physicist. The perceived threat level jumps exponentially, and there is suddenly cause to fear a WMD. When Amir's cousin, Jamal, is caught on camera moving an extremely heavy, bulky load out of a storage area Amir visited just before his death, Castle's nightmare scenario no longer look like works of fiction. However, and as ever, things are not what they seem, and not only is Amir innocent of any part in the bomb plot, he was in fact killed trying to stop it. Kevin McCann, whose real name is Radford Hayes is a former member of military special ops who, with like-minded friends, has decided the US needs a second wake-up call. He has built a dirty nuke to devastate New York in an attack which, he is certain, will be blamed on Amir's family, and so on Middle Eastern terrorists, thus igniting a general war between the US and the Arab world. Unfortunately, before McCann's plan could be enacted, Amir caught onto what he was doing, and McCann sent his two friends to kill him and steal all evidence of what they were planning.
