  • The graphic novels in the canon consist of fifteen in print, a sixteenth volume complete and available and a seventeenth volume in progress on the web. Starting with the fourteenth volume, the story has now entered Act 2 and the volume numbers have started over at one. Volumes in Act 2 will be identified in the chronology by the act number, a dash, and then the volume number; for example, Act 2, Volume 1 will be numbered 2-1. Eventually, the volumes in the first part, Act 1, will be renumbered to match. For a partial timeline of the events in the comic, see Internal Chronology.

  • The monk blames himself for Lady Selnikov's death. He recounts how she searched the vaults for something and became increasingly frantic as she failed to find it. The Beast killed her as she released it. Agatha wonders out loud what she was looking for. The monk holds up a notebook that may hold the answer.
  • Father Gerät lists Ulm's many attempts on Agatha's life, and reveals that she was protected, not by the Almighty, but by Ulm's fellow monks, who saw right through his supposedly surreptitious assassination attempts. Ulm is surprised to learn that Father Gerät was aware Agatha was the Lady Heterodyne, but Father Gerät is surprised in turn to learn that the attacks on the Wyrm of Limerick were aimed at Lady Selnikov and not the Heterodyne.
  • The König wakes Dimo up to talk to him . He wants Dimo to take the Bears to the Master, the secret, hidden Master from Castle Wulfenbach. Dimo assumes this must mean Agatha, but it seems wise for the Reader to wait for further revelations.
  • Two voices have a discussion about being cold and hungry. They are coming from a small train station located near the intersection of the railway with a road. It is a snowy, wintry scene.
  • Higgs is still trying to subdue Vole, and finally succeeds, although he seems somewhat punch drunk. Gil orders Vole restrained, put on a drip feed, and asks that someone stay with him at all times to let Gil know the minute he wakes up. Higgs pulls himself together and volunteers.
  • Violetta detects someone hiding in the closet: Her Auntie Margolotta? Violetta's aunt professes her loyalty to Tarvek, as least as an alternative to Martellus. Apparently, the membership of the Tarvek fan club would be rather small.
  • A cola hucker is used to propel lumps of coal at the Armed Bears at very high velocity. The coal hits the bears, but doesn't have the desired effect.
  • Tweedle takes hold of Agatha's upper arm and she objects to being touched by him—strongly! Tweedle gets the point and agrees to never do it again. Agatha mentions that she still hasn't undone the She and Brother Matthias continue to plan how to defeat the Beast.
  • As Vole is removed from the "time-freeze field" something starts happening to him. He appears to be melting and his fangs grow. He is grabbed and immobilized. Gil decides they should leave, but this may turn out to be difficult.
  • Brother Gabriel and Father Gerät discuss the start of Brother Ulm's penance and the state of St. Szpac's defenses. As they speak, monks manning a large weapon fire on one attacking airship and destroy several.
  • The young monk and Brother Ulm discuss the state of High Alert and exactly how dangerous Agatha is. Brother Ulm reveals his concerns about how Agatha got to Clankshead. Brother Ulm calls, "All aboard!" and Dimo says, "'Bout time."
  • Gil takes out and activates a device that seems to be able to amplify and "tune" the mysterious voices. After apparently focusing on the wrong voice, Gil "tunes in" Castle Heterodyne. The device allows two-way communication, and Gil attempts to speak to the Castle, but Higgs cuts him off before he can do so. This seems to be a good thing, because the Castle doesn't seem to be very fond of the Wulfenbach family or its minions or allies at the moment.
  • Gil and Higgs are viewing the Red Cathedral from a distance. Above it hovers a very large apparition that, from its color and the associated electrical activity, seems similar in appearance to the time windows from early in the story. Within the "window" is/are strange being/beings that seem to be observing Mechanicsburg and reaching out into the space above it.
  • Rerich is quite amused at Tweedle's notion that Euphrosynia loved Andronicus. He says Adronicus would have had to wipe out the Heterodynes, if he had married Euphrosynia, since they were monsters. Tweedle shows he understands by finishing Rerich off.
  • Humongulus pulls the car carrying the party to the lift shaft and then starts to haul it up to the yards, bragging all the while. Zeetha expresses admiration for his spiky delts, pleasing Humongulus greatly. As they ascend, the Sparks work and a shower of molten metal falls around the car. A voice from above calls out a warning, and the Sparks respond enthusiastically.
  • Our heroes escape from Professor Bosewichte's surprisingly–poorly-tied ropes and Elmira provides a history lesson.
  • Dimo suspects that Brother Ulm knows he and the other Jägers are there. Fearing for Agatha's safety, he decides to go along, leaping onto the roof of the moving train. This comes as no surprise to his companions.
  • Gil is in his Time Borer Lab, talking to the laboratory staff. He is planning on pulling someone out of the Mechanicsburg "time-freeze bubble," despite the apparent dangers to himself and the subject.
  • Gil and Higgs spot something, like nothing they have ever seen before, looming over the Red Cathedral. The Castle says that they have come before, surprising Gil and Higgs, and talks about the planes and angles of time. Gil concludes that the being is heading for his father.
  • A large, muscular, half-naked man, dressed in a fur loincloth and "primitive" jewelry, has apparent already accosted two young men who now lie prostrate on the ground and is questioning a third, Mr. Frey, asking what place he is in. He identifies himself as "De Ht'rok'din." When he finds out there is a long line of Heterodyne descendants, he demands to be taken to a map and tools. Mr. Frey promises to obey.
  • The sanctuary cars land and the passengers disembark. Brother Ulm seems prepared to stop Agatha at any cost, but is knocked out by a brother monk before he can use the gun-like object he has just produced from his robe. Apparently, the Abbot is waiting impatiently.
  • Tweedle and Tybalt describe how they ended up in the vaults. Brother Matthias explains that they plan to use magnetism against the Beast and displays a Manual Magnetic Field Shaper; Tweedle approves. Agatha and the monks prepare to deal with the Beast, and Tweedle joins them.
  • They continue to travel through the vaults, some of which are in ruins. Brother Ulm begs for quick action. Agatha is confident that they can stop the Beast before it does much damage. Tweedle appears and startles Agatha. Unbeknownst to everyone , they are being stalked by a Dreen.
  • Lady Selnikov forces a monk to lead her to certain vaults in St. Szpac at gunpoint. We find out that the Lady was behind at least some of the attacks on the railway as a means of getting her into the Fortress Depot of Saint Szpac.
  • Agatha boards the train. She confesses to Brother Ulm, who doesn't like what he hears. Agatha's Wasp eater peeks out through a hole in her hat.
  • Brother Ulm demands a status report on the sanctuary cars from another monk. One passenger is still missing. It turns out to be Lady Selnikov, who hurries into view. The second monk blathers about about how glad he is to see her, while Brother Ulm orders him back to his post. A loud sound rings out! An impact? But they aren't even moving.
  • Higgs is looking at Vole, who is suspended in a containment field. Gil quizzes Higgs on his knowledge of Jägermonsters and Higgs has some interesting answers.
  • Brother Ulm tells Agatha there is trouble on the line behind them as well as in front. She goes off to help Brother Matthias fix the tracks over the bridge, while Dimo asks some smart questions.
  • Brother Ulm explains that the Beast was built by Agatha's grandfather, Saturnus, and that, while the Corbettites respect existing towns, local sentiment, borders, etc. when they lay tracks, the Beast, like its creator , respects none of these things, going where it wishes and taking whatever it needs to do it.
  • The monks start dragging Agatha toward the train as she expresses puzzlement. The armed bears attack, sending Dimo flying with one blow. They roar out a battle cry as their blank expressions change to savage fury. Agatha decides discretion is the better part of valor and starts running away, now dragging the monks after her.
  • Higgs and Gil walk down the shaft bored through frozen-in-time Mechanicsburg. They discuss the advancement of science. Higgs is pushing a cart with a large grabber claw. Gil checks on the rate of fall of a cup in the frozen-in-time zone. And then the voices start.
  • Krosp reveals himself and promises to behave.
  • Tweedle's sparkhounds have hunted down Rerich, another Jäger acting as an Agatha decoy. Rerich is dying, but has already taken out six Sparkhounds. Tweedle fumes and questions Rerich, who jokes and refuses to reveal Agatha's whereabouts.
  • Agatha and Violetta are looking out the window of the flying sanctuary car. Agatha is enthusiastic about their new mode of transportation, but Violetta seems uneasy about it. They discuss Moloch von Zinzer's current whereabouts and future plans. Zeetha shows up and seems even more delighted with being on a flying train than Agatha.
  • Agatha criticizes Wooster for screaming at the sight of her en dishabille. Wooster criticizes Agatha's plan to scare off intruders by being clad only in a towel with an armed Krosp as a backup. The unidentified woman comes out of hiding and realizes Agatha is the Heterodyne Girl.
  • Agatha explains the towel—and her plan—to Zeetha, who seems a bit perturbed. There is a knock at the door. Agatha opens it, expecting room service, but finding a smoke knight with a knife instead. The knight has just been knocked out by a Corbettite monk, as part of their service. Now Zeetha understands—it was
  • The Abbot leads Tweedle to Saint Szpacs's general, Brother Vadaxxus, who is also the cook. While Tweedle is taken aback at this, he is unwillingly impressed by the military and strategic acumen of Brother Vadaxxus, who obviously gets the better of Tweedle in their exchange.
  • The train pulls into the station.
  • Everyone in Agatha's compartment is worried about the train's sudden stop and Agatha rushes out into the corridor to find out what's going on. Agatha then rushes back into her compartment to get dressed, having forgotten she is wearing only a towel. Eventually everyone in Agatha's party gets off the train to discover it was stopped by an avalanche; obviously no foul play is going on, after all.
  • The Ulster Men prepare to hold off the attackers while the passengers are moved to the three sanctuary cars at the end of the train for transport to the Corbettite depot fortress. However, Brother Ulm seems determined to prevent Agatha from being brought there at any cost.
  • Bang enters the lab. She doesn't recognize Vole at first and offers to "help" finish him off. Before she can, Gil points out that he is the one she liked. It turns out she likes him even more after his makeover.
  • Wooster makes introductions. Lady Selnikov begs to not be killed. Wooster tries, and fails, to reassure her.
  • Wooster notices the time, removes his disguise, arms his weapon, and enters Agatha's compartment. She is in a state of dishabille, but he seems more frightened of her than she is of him.
  • Agatha and company are having some drinks while they wait to get to their destination. No, look! They're already there: the Fortress Depot of Saint Szpac.
  • As the time-borer lab staff ready the equipment, Gil and Higgs are briefed by Frau Doktor as they prepare to enter the time-borer shaft.
  • Seffie has a conversation with Gil and rates some things. Her political marriage to Gil: good. The current state of Europa: bad. Agatha's prospects: worse. The chances of Gil ever seeing Agatha safely again: downright terrible.
  • Wooster freaks out. Auntie Margolotta and Violetta have a conversation about Tarvek, Agatha, and Gil. They realize that Gil may have been after someone/something other than Agatha in Mechanicsburg.
  • Agatha has finally lost patience with Brother Ulm's nonsense and demands to know what's going on. Brother Ulm says he'll tell her, right after they get to a safe place. Brother Otto argues that the tunnels are safe enough, just before the wall comes crashing down on him. What appears to be a huge, glowing eye is seen, and an ominous voice is heard, through the gap.
  • Bang is reporting to Gil. She says that she has narrowed down the search for Agatha to seven possible candidates. Gil grabs the list, immediately chooses one, and says they are going after her.
  • Father Gerät tells Violetta, Agatha, and company that he wants them to stay well away from Lady Selnikov. We learn a bit of Corbettite history, about how the order came to acquire some of the horrors in their vaults. Father Gerät tells Agatha he knows she is the Lady Heterodyne and that Brother Ulm will be looking after her now.
  • Agatha seems to recognize the notebook as the one by Moxana. Violetta recognizes her aunt as the one laid out on the floor. At first Violetta doesn't believe she's dead, but a closer look convinces her. She then reminisces about the good old days with Auntie Margolotta.
  • Room service shows up expectedly. Wooster smalls a rat, but is reassured, until Krosp smells poison. But it's just Violetta , hiding under the cart.
  • Agatha, Tweedle, and their parties finally confront the Beast face to face.
  • Agatha heads to the sanctuary cars and finds her companions are already aboard. The Ulster Men hold off the bears, but with great difficulty. Count Wolkerstorfer approaches them and once again displays his obsession with magnets.
  • The engine sounds a warning signal, opens its mouth, and emits an energy blast at the avalanche. Brother Ulm tells Agatha the problem is "over here."
  • Violetta, Agatha, and company are taken to see the Abbot of St. Szpac, Father Gerät. After he asks Violetta about her relationship to Lady Selnikov, we find out that other Corbettite railway lines are also being attacked by people looking for Lady Selnikov because she stole a key and a book.
  • Bang makes Gil explain what Klaus did to him. When she finds out that Gil allow Klaus to use mind control on him, she know who to hit. .
  • Wolkerstorfer is distracted from his mission by a kitty and starts to babble. Oömfumf tells him to shut up. Wolkerstorfer and Oömfumf attack each other, which ends with Oömfumf's apparent death. In the middle of his victory rant, Wolkerstorfer completely forgets what he is doing.
  • Would-be assassin #2 tries a desperate, last-ditch escape scheme, but is foiled by another Corbettite monk. As an apology for the near failure of the assassin-disposal service, the monk gives Agatha chits for free drinks in the dining car. There is much rejoicing. But, before their good fortune can be taken advantage of, the train brakes unexpectedly, and everyone is thrown off their feet.
  • A loud commotion is heard coming from inside the fortress. The Abbot reacts with dismay; Tweedle orders his forces to be at the ready. The Abbot doesn't want help; Tweedle insists. The Abbot accuses Tweedle of deliberately releasing the Beast. Tweedle denies this, but likes the way the Abbot thinks, and offers him a post as advisor.
  • Brother Ulm watches in horror as the bears tip over the engine. The other railroad cars fall one by one, like dominoes, as the other Corbettite monk races to disengage the coupling to the sanctuary cars before they too fall over, making escape impossible.
  • The Ht'rok'din retrieves one of his old weapons from a smashed museum display case. Elmira and Theodessa stop him temporarily, but Professor Bosewichte gets the drop on them and leaves them and the Mr. Frey student tied up, while he runs off with the Ht'rok'din.
  • Agatha and Krosp wait at a small, otherwise deserted train station in the snow. As Krosp argues about whether the train will ever arrive, it just pulls into sight.
  • As the party flees, Brother Ulm describes what they're fleeing from, and Agatha becomes excited at idea of a self-fueling locomotive that doesn't need tracks. As she expresses her enthusiasm, she finds that Ulm definitely doesn't share it and realizes that the Beast is a Heterodyne creation and this is why Ulm has been trying to kill her.
  • Everyone proceeds to the lift, the motive power of which is provided by a very large clank named Humongulous. Tweedle warns them about the Beast's ability to manipulate even nonferrous metals. The Sparks are distracted by this, but Wooster helps them focus. Agatha thanks Tweedle for the warning.
  • Krosp appears, asking why they aren't trying to get out of the trap the train has been placed in. When Brother Ulm replies there's nothing to be done, Krosp confronts him with a Corbettite map of all nearby obstacles, which shows an escape route. This route leads to a Corbettite depot fortress, but Brother Ulm is adamant that no outsider will be allowed to go there, especially Agatha.
  • Tweedle requests a parley with the Corbettites and meets with Father Gerät. Tweedle explains the benefits the Corbettites would have under his rule as Storm King, but Father Gerät demurs.
  • Wooster confronts Brother Ulm about his attempts on Agatha's life, wondering why he made them. Ulm is surprised to have been found out and confesses it was because she was a Heterodyne and might be one of the bad ones. Just then a loud crash or explosion and monstrous bellow ring out, seeming to confirm Ulm's worst fears.
  • Count Wolkerstorfer crushes the Rail Gun and is warned about the perils of messing with the Corbettite Railway. But he doesn't seems worried. After all, it's not as if he is all by himself, he says, as his troop comes into view.
  • Brother Gabriel questions Agatha and company about their involvement in the attacks on the railway. Violetta explains that Lady Selnikov is her aunt and that more of her family is probably involved. She says they should see the Abbot and the monk agrees.
  • Tweedle struggles to avoid the Beast's magnetic pull as Tybalt appears. The Beast attracts the knight's armor, but Tweedle orders Tybalt to shed it and help him. Tybalt not only sheds his armor, but his human form as well! He seemingly becomes a sparkhound. Now free of the Beast's pull, Tybalt rescues Tweedle.
  • We discover that the airships just destroyed by the Corbettites were part of Tweedle's fleet. He angrily demands to know who fired, against his orders. Tweedle's advisor smugly claims responsibility. Tweedle shows his displeasure by defenestrating him with dispatch.
  • Dimo admits "schmot pipple" don't let a Heterodyne into their secret fortress. He examine the Corbettite map Krosp acquired and evaluates their options. Approaching sounds indicate the fight below the bridge is over. The apparent victor is a Spark almost entirely encased in brass musical instruments, Count Oömfumf. Now Dimo really wants to see "dot odder guy."
  • The unconscious Ulm is revived by Father Gerät. He scolds Ulm for his homicidal plans toward a certain passenger. Ulm is astonished that Father Gerät knew about his plans, but apparently he wasn't as sneaky as he thought.
  • Gil is determined to keep Vole alive for the sake of science! He asks Dr. Scantrontb if she is getting readings and asks her to send in Captain DuPree . Gil tells Higgs that Vole has already aged hundreds of years as Vole seems to recognize someone.
  • Brother Matthias, the engineer of the Wyrm of Limerick, yells at Agatha when she suggests that being late isn't such a bad thing. Dimo appears and chides him for this. Matthias apologizes. Agatha thanks Dimo and greets him as if he were a stranger. She invites him to join her and her party for free drinks, but Brother Ulm says he might need their assistance.
  • In a scene apparently set in the future of the current story, TPU student Elmira performs a forbidden experiment in Transdimensional Harmonics, to the dismay of her friend, Theodessa, and the outrage of Professor Bosewichte. This experiment seems to have something to do with the Heterodyne, but which Heterodyne?
  • Count Oömfumf demands to be told the location of Lady Selnikov. Dimo and Krosp are puzzled. A very large clank rises behind Count Oömfumf and threatens him. Dimo starts to wonder out loud why anyone would want Lady Selnikov when Lady Heterodyne is right here, but Krosp bites his finger to shut him up.
  • Night is falling. The avalanche has been cleared by the blast from the engine, revealing the "problem over here" to be that the bridge is out and a couple of "things" are fighting in the darkness below it. Brother Matthias, who turns out to be a Sparky engineer who likes his job, says he and his lads will get train over the missing bridge in no time. Brother Ulm is in no hurry to leave. He doesn't want to miss a good fight. So what's the problem?
  • Gil shoots Vole full of "feeds" - apparently intravenous lines. He then tries to place Vole in restraints. Doesn't he know by now that never works? Next, he tries to distract Vole from tampering with the feeds by allowing Vole to fling him across the room and slam him into some equipment hard enough to dent it. Gil calls on Higgs to join him. Higgs seems a bit critical of Gil's strategy.
  • Father Gerät finally forces Ulm to reveal why he was trying to kill Agatha: He fears she will free the Beast, a creature that nearly destroyed the Corbettites some time ago. But Ulm has no proof that Agatha even knows the Beast exists and Father Gerät dismisses his fears.
  • Zeetha leaps at Tweedle with swords drawn, but is blocked by Tybalt. Tweedle proposes that he and Agatha should be working together to defeat the Beast. Agatha asks what will happen after they succeed; Tweedle respond that of course he will help speed her on her way to Paris.
  • Zeetha and Agatha discuss what happened to Agatha when she went missing. The "door" that took Agatha to Martellus' fortress reminds Zeetha of a magic gate in Skifander, and she says she'll want to examine it when they free Mechanicsburg. Agatha expresses a bit of doubt that they ever will. Zeetha corrects her.
  • Bang comes up with a good solution to the "Vole problem" that Gil didn't think of. This discomfits Gil and makes Bang gloat. But a moment later she confronts Gil, asking him to explain his recent odd behavior.
  • Brother Matthias stops Agatha and company as they head towards the armory, telling them it has been completely destroyed by the Beast. Agatha suggests that they go find something to use against the Beast in the vaults. The monks find the suggestion unthinkable until they are informed that the Beast has destroyed the kitchens. Then they cry as one man, "To the vaults!"
  • The woman who burst into Agatha's compartment a moment ago begs Agatha to let her stay and hide there because she is fleeing from assassins. Krosp objects, but Agatha, who is suddenly holding what seems to be a Sparky weapon, says the woman can stay until it's safe. Being confronted with a talking cat and Agatha's Sparkiness seems to make the woman doubt she has chosen the best hiding place after all.
  • Tweedle's uncle scolds him for his precipitate action. We discover that Tweedle doesn't want the Corbettites against him and that he knows Agatha is in St. Szpac. He explains his philosophy of royal power and where Baron Klaus Wulfenbach went wrong.
  • Agatha removes her coat, which is so completely lined with tools that it stands up on its own. As Krosp dons his own coat, Agatha releases her wasp eater from her hat. They discuss the whereabouts of Wooster, who is supposed to already be on the train. A well-dressed, dark-haired woman runs into Agatha's compartment, begging for help. Is it Wooster—or Dimo—in a really good disguise?
  • Phil, Kaja, and Cheyenne mention LonCon and congratulate the winner of the Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story, . Phil also mentions that the 2015 World Science Fiction Convention will be at Sasquan, in the Professors' .
  • Brother Vadaxxus tells Tweedle how they will deal with the Beast: distraction and destruction . Tweedle has to admit the plan is sound. But then he spots something Vadaxxus has missed: The kitchen is a rich source of free metal and a perfect Beast buffet!
  • The Corbettite Monks prepare to defend against the attack of Count Wolkerstorfer and the Armed Bears.
  • Bang mocks Gil for having previously declared that Agatha couldn't be on a train. Gil admits that he has miscalculated with regard to Agatha's whereabouts, and demonstrates how completely she has messed with his head, incidentally surprising a couple of men behind a door, locked in a tight embrace—for Science!
  • Gil discards the last pretense of being in disguise and the Castle of being fooled. The Castle says it will not harm him, despite knowing his identity—that's Agatha's job. The Castle then tells the story of Master Robur and his crisis of faith , and states that Gil's father has now outdone the Heterodynes in recklessness, having stopped time with, seemingly, no plan to restart it. If Gil can't disable the black-level device, bad things will happen, and his time is dwindling.
  • Brother Ulm operates controls in one of the sanctuary cars and the roofs fly off, as a giant gas bag inflates from the top of each car. As the bears watch in bemusement and Count Wolkerstorfer in frustration, the balloons lift the cars high in the air, well out of their reach. The Count orders the bears to "Follow them!"
  • Bang continues pressing Gil to tell her why he's been behaving like "a completely different person." She finally browbeats him into apparently telling the truth.
  • Like grunts everywhere when given vague orders , two armed bears aren't sure where they are supposed to go next. All they do know is that they are hungry, and then they nearly trip over Dimo. While discussing the etiquette of dining on Jäger, they smell that Dimo has has been with someone in charge and decide they can't eat him—they must bring him to the König.
  • A loud rumbling is heard . Agatha springs into action, asking where armaments or a workshop can be found. Ulm, having decided she is the lesser of two evils, leads the way. When they get to the workshop, however, it is in ruins, with flaming wreckage on either side, and a huge, newly dug tunnel in the back.
  • The Corbettite Railway crew go through and around the train, telling all passengers to move to the last three cars. The passengers are told to move with no delay and no luggage. If they try to argue, the passengers are strongly encouraged to co-operate. Lady Selnikov wins her argument with the monk that is trying to hurry her along, by firing three shots into his chest at point blank range.
  • Agatha notices there are more pages in the van Rign notebook than before, as Brother Matthias approaches to suggest ways of dealing with the Beast using items from the vaults. Agatha speculates that they can trap it with magnetic fields, but also displays a weakness for volcanoes, much to Violetta's dismay.
  • Agatha worries about Dimo, but Zeetha tells her to stop and reminds her that she needs to get to Paris. Brother Gabriel appears and explains that no one is going anywhere for the moment.
  • Gil, Bang, and Bohrlaikha are now on the ground. Gil intercepts a carriage traveling through the snow and calls for Agatha to come out, but it turns out to contain a Jäger disguised as her instead.
  • Brother Otto bursts into the room occupied by Agatha and company, announcing that the Church has allied with the new Storm King—the Bishop will make the Corbettites hand over Agatha ! But not if they can't find her, and Brother Otto will take her a good hiding place—the catacombs.
  • Agatha and company and the party of monks reach the vaults and find them badly damaged, including the heavy crypts. In one chamber, Agatha finds an injured monk and the Lady Selnikov, who is laid out on her back with her face covered by a cloth, apparently a scrap torn from the monk's habit. The monk says is dead—killed by the Beast.
  • Bang's hungry, so she and Gil head off to the kitchen. As they discuss Vole, they encounter Miss Pantagruel, who has a report: The Corbettites are under attack. Gil concludes this must be the work of Tweedle and decides to head out in pursuit at once. Miss Pantagruel lifts Bohrlaika up to Gil's level with one hand.
  • Agatha and Violetta catch up. Suddenly, Agatha senses imminent danger and leaps to defend herself. Too late! She gets a snowball in the face as Zeetha crashes through the window.
  • Agatha is ready to take things up a notch in the fight with Count Wolkerstorfer, but a highly agitated Dimo commands her and everyone else to get on the train and get away as fast as possible. The source of his alarm becomes clear when the troop accompanying Count Wolkerstorfer is revealed to be made up of arms-bearing bears in the final panel.
  • The train cars fall, each one pulling over the next, faster and faster as the tipping point approaches the sanctuary cars. As a monk fumbles with the quick-release coupling, Zeetha appears and severs it with one blow, saving the sanctuary cars, and getting her due reward.
  • Gil is back on Castle Wulfenbach, briefing his staff. Seffie, who is also there, talks to Gil about her brother and his ambitions to be the the new Storm King.
  • Tweedle decides to face the Beast and stays in the kitchen as everyone else flees. He discovers the Beast can manipulate all metal, even non-ferrous metal, magnetically. And that the Beast thinks all metal belongs to it, even his crown…and his prosthetic hand.
  • Higgs tells the Castle Agatha has escaped. The Castle approves. Gil talks to it in French, to hide his identity. He finds out the Castle is hindered by the "time-freeze" field, but not not completely disabled. He tells it he is going to perform an extraction. The Castle demands to watch.
  • After narrowly deciding to signal a state of "High Alert" rather than ejecting Agatha, Brother Ulm hears her explain why she isn't trapped in Mechanicsburg and welcomes her aboard the Wyrm of Limerick.
  • Count Wolkerstorfer tries to remember what he is doing by mentally retracing his actions. Suddenly, he has it— tell his enemies to surrender or be destroyed! Dimo is impressed; Krosp, not so much.
  • Brother Ulm explains the rules of the Corbettite Railway and Agatha arranges for a private compartment with a surprisingly large donation.
  • Gil jury rigs a device to let the Castle see the Extradimensional Being. The Castle panics at first—this is not what it was expecting. It then estimates that Gil has two years before the Being can reach Klaus/the black-level device. It tells Gil and Higgs to destroy the device. When Higgs expresses doubt that they can, the Castle says to fetch Agatha without fail.
  • Gil and Higgs discuss Jäger lore. Gil releases Vole's containment field.
  • Under Gil's direction, Higgs operates the temporal extraction equipment in an attempt to pull Vole out of the "time-freeze field." Vole starts to bellow, apparently in pain.
  • Brother Ulm and Agatha converse as he shows her to her private compartment. Agatha states her intention to visit the libraries of Paris, and, if possible, the Master of Paris himself. Krosp speaks up at an appropriate moment, surprising Brother Ulm.
  • Agatha and the monks activate the rail gun, which extends one of the broken train rails to skewer Count Wolkerstorfer's giant clank. Wolkerstorfer uses his magnet to rip the rail gun off the tracks and into his clank's claw.
  • Agatha's normal-person plan actually worked! Except, before he can leave, the assassin is confronted by not just an armed-and-dangerous Krosp, but Zeetha, Wooster, Violetta, and even Lady Margarella, as well.
  • Several Wulfenbach minions are trying to get Gil's attention at the same time, addressing him as Herr Baron. They are making reports. A member of the crew tells Gil Captain Dupree is there. He dismisses the others and goes to see Dupree, who has found "her."
  • Agatha tells the party she wants to a chance to talk to the Beast after is is subdued. As she is speaking, the car reached the surface and they exit into the yards. They meet a party of Tweedle's knights and Tweedle asks how the fight is going. The answer comes back, "All things considered, your Majesty, we're doing pretty well—".
  • Agatha describes how the rail gun works and demonstrates, turning Count Wolkerstorfer's magnet against him. Brother Matthias chides Agatha for her enjoyment of the demonstration. He takes the controller from her, only to continue demonstrating even more gleefully.
  • Tweedle questions the Jäger, asking him his name and getting him to reminisce about the good old days, back when he fought the original Storm King.
  • Agatha's smartness is discussed. Bang is insulted. Killing is suggested. A Jäger is set free. "That other guy" is mentioned.

  • The graphic novels in the canon consist of fifteen in print, a sixteenth volume complete and available and a seventeenth volume in progress on the web. Starting with the fourteenth volume, the story has now entered Act 2 and the volume numbers have started over at one. Volumes in Act 2 will be identified in the chronology by the act number, a dash, and then the volume number; for example, Act 2, Volume 1 will be numbered 2-1.
