  • The Second Battle of Vulcanis was a Dominion offensive against the Federation member world of Vulcan during the Dominion War in 2374. (LUG RPG: The Dominion War Sourcebook: The Fires of Armageddon) Following their victory at Betazed the Dominion was quick to attempt to capitalise, striking for a second time at the Vulcanis system. A large force with a core of large heavy warships drove the Dominion all the way to the fifth planet in the system before the Starfleet Fifth Fleet managed to halt their advanced after six hours of brutal fighting. With the Dominion's advanced halted Admiral Salok, the commander of the Fifth Fleet, orchestrated a number of daring attacks on the Dominion fleet. Hammering one of the Dominion's flanks with his larger ships. He used his Akira-class and Steamrunner-class starships with their attack fighter wings to lay waste to the Dominion's own fighters and capital ships. Destroyer wings then attacked the weak points in the Dominion's formation. Finally, he took his flagship, the USS Gibraltar, backed up with wings of Klingon warships and attacked the openings in the Dominion's fleet. The tactic was a success with the Dominion's formation collapsing. With the battle lost the Dominion retreated back six lightyears, giving the Federation victory. However, it was a costly victory with nearly 250 starships lost and 37,000 Starfleet and Klingon personnel killed in the battle.

With a strong centralformation of Jem'Hadar Battlecrusiers backed up by Galor class ships and swarms of Jem'Hadar Fighters, the Dominion penetrated as Far as the Class J Gas Giant Kal-Ap-Ton also known as Vulcanis V in a bloody 6 Hour battle. During the Fighting, ships from both sides swooped between and around the Dozen Moons of Kal-Ap-Ton and through the upper atmosphere as they tried to outmanuver and outflank each other. If the ships here failed to defend Vulcan then the Dominion would proceed to Vulcan itself and try to take the planet. Admiral Salok, Commander of the Starfleet 5th Fleet, orchestrated several daring assaults to break the back of the Dominion Offensive. First he used wings of large Capital ships to outmanuver and weaken one of the enemy flanks. Second, his Akiras, Steamrunners, as well as their compliments of Starfleet Attack Fighters laid waste to enemy tactical wings and then inflicted heavy losses on enemy Capital ships. Third, he sent Destroyer Wings formed from the remants of other wings to attack weak points in the enemy formation. Backed up by Klingon Wings and by his Sovereign class Flagship, The USS Gibraltar (NCC-75689), they struck at the new openings, enlarging them and then collapsing the enemy formations Realizing they had lost the battle, the Dominion - Cardassian Forces withdrew to a system 6 light years away. The Federation forces let them go as they were too battered and exhausted to pursue. The victory cost nearly 90 ships and 12,000 Starfleet and Klingon lives but was crucial for Federation security. (Decipher RPG module: Starships) As Vulcan was never known to have fallen to the Dominion, it could be presumed that the Dominion's offensive failed, although no clear references to one side's definitive victory exist.
