Ihre Eltern Ludmilla und Drago Lubinov besaßen eine Schneiderei, die einen sehr guten Ruf genoß und durch Aufträge des Adels zu Wohlstand und Ansehen kam. Sie bekam eine gute Erziehung und Ausbildung und genügte dabei den hohen Anforderungen an Fleiß und Handwerkskunst. Als die Verlassenen Gilneas verheerten und gleichzeitig der Worgenfluch über sie hereinbrach, war die Familie völlig überrascht worden und wurde in den Wirren aus Leid und Tod auseinandergerissen. Verstört und in Todesangst irrte Laika in der Stadt umher und wurde von einem Worgen angefallen, konnte sich aber dem Angriff erwehren und schließlich auf ein Flüchtlingsschiff retten. Verflucht rang sie um ihre Menschlichkeit, die sie nur durch beherzte Hilfe der Alchemiekundigen und Elfen bewahren konnte. Erschüttert über die Erlebnisse und von tiefer Trauer überwältigt glich Sie im Flüchtlingslager eher einem Gespenst denn einem Menschen. So vegetierte sie in Selbstmitleid und Verzweiflung einige Tage dahin, bis ihre stolze Natur und der Wille zu Leben über den Selbstzweifeln und den Suizidgedanken, die der Fluch schürte, dominierte. Sie beschloß, ihr Leben selbst in die Hand zu nehmen und schloß sich einer Gruppe Abenteuer an, die ihr Glück in der Ferne suchen und sich selber Nebelwanderer nennen.
