  • Dollhouse is an American science fiction television series created by writer and director Joss Whedon under Mutant Enemy Productions. It premiered on February 13, 2009, on the Fox network and was officially canceled on November 11, 2009. The final episode aired on January 29, 2010. Production wrapped in December 2009, with a total of 27 episodes produced including the original pilot. The show revolves around a corporation running numerous underground establishments (known as "Dollhouses") across the globe which program individuals referred to as Actives (or Dolls) with temporary personalities and skills. Wealthy clients hire Actives from Dollhouses at great expense for various purposes. The series primarily follows the Active known as Echo, played by Eliza Dushku, on her journey towards self-awareness. Dushku also served as series producer.

Not all can simply roam the streets for prey to satisfy their darker pleasures, not everyone will benefit from the public branding of those twisted desires on the minds of the populace. It is only natural then that The Abyss may come to life. Its trade is the body, its clientele the shadows. Politicians, corrupt officers, investors, or just rich deviants. They come hearing the promise of anonymity, the guarantee of their public face never leaving the club's walls tainted with what goes on within. The Abyss, ladies and gentlemen, is a slave pen. All that is needed is credits, and they can be rented for an hour, for a night, or even bought to be taken out the doors for whatever use you have in mind. You can ravage them, scar their bodies, mutilate or even kill these beings for whom rights and privileges no longer exist. For them, whether the club bought or 'found' its merchandise, there are only two ways out; Purchase or death.

The Dollhouse is very selective about its clientele and performs thorough background checks. According to a leaked and since discarded pilot script, each assignment is supposed to last only 10 hours; engagements seen on-screen have lasted as long as three days. Each Doll supposedly voluntarily gives up five years of his/her life to work for the Dollhouse after which they get "a ridiculously large sum of money and no memory of anything they did for the Dollhouse." However, a former Active will still have "Active architecture" in their brain. Dolls that do not perform satisfactorily are "sent to the Attic", like other people Rossum is unhappy with. According to the urban legend that surrounds the Dollhouse, it has been around in Los Angeles since the 1980s.

Alice Liddell had to defeat a series of dolls and puzzles to reach the heart of the new corruption of Wonderland. The dollhouse symbolizes Alice's loss of innocence, the loss of innocence of children and contains themes of identity. This disturbing rendition of a corrupted child's paradise acts as a wake-up call for Alice to realize the truth before it's too late - if Alice fails to search the deepest recesses of her memories, mind and subconscious, she will "die" psychologically.

Melissa was spirited inside the Dollhouse as well and came face to face with Susan, who was being transformed into a living doll by the evil structure - together the two braved their way to the Dollhouse's attic and took a leap of faith out of the top window: freeing themselves from this toy-like prison. Melissa proceeded to return to her aunt and uncle, revealing Susan to them as well - later that night Melissa's uncle proceeded to take the Dollhouse and burned it on a bonfire to stop it from claiming any other victims.
