Miranda started his film career in high school, when at the age of sixteen he wrote, directed and acted in Clayton's Friends. After graduating from Wesleyan University, he formed a hip hop comedy troupe - Freestyle Love Supreme. He started work on "In the Heights" in 1999 while he was at college. Although his film and television work is limited, he is a hardworking stage actor. In addition, he has worked as an English teacher, columnist, and restaurant reviewer. He is currently working on a part of the sound track for Disney's new movie Moana and starred, of course, in Hamilton.

Miranda also made several appearances on the 2009 revival of The Electric Company, and provided the translations for the 2009 revival of West Side Story. Miss Piggy name-dropped Miranda in a 2017 interview with InStyle. Asked about her musical theater crush, Piggy said: "Lin-Manuel Miranda, of course ... but only after he completely assured moi that Hamilton was not some kind of veiled porcine insult. He’s adorable, and strictly entre nous, he's going to be writing a new musical for moi. Right now, I’m not at liberty to tell you more, but as soon as I tell Lin about it, you’ll be the first to know."
