thumb|Lt. (TOS: ) David "Dave" Bailey was a Federation Starfleet officer on active duty in the 23rd century. Lieutenant Bailey transferred to the USS Enterprise after the death of alpha-shift helmsman Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell on Delta-Vega in 2265, and Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu's repositioning from astrophysicist to helmsman. (TOS novel: My Brother's Keeper trilogy: Constitution) Sulu and Bailey were roommates. (Orion Press: Chekov's Enterprise) After Enterprise's first contact with a member of the First Federation, Bailey became the Federation liaison to this newly-encountered species. (TOS: "The Corbomite Maneuver") In 2270, Bailey was promoted to commander and given command of the USS Nelson, a destroyer on patrol near Orion territory. (Orion Press: "False Colors", "...Is Yet Revenge") By the mid-2280s, Bailey was an officer in Starfleet's Planetary Relations division. (Orion Press: "The Return") Circa 2286, Bailey was one of the former Enterprise officers who rejoined Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise-A when they battled aliens who had attacked Starfleet, Klingon and Romulan vessels since at least the 2250s. (TOS novel: Debt of Honor) Bailey studied drumming following a stint as a pilot in World War II. According to All Music Guide, Bailey helped popularize the bossa nova in the 1960s. Bailey served stints with a variety of jazz ensembles, including those led by Johnny Hodges, Charles Mingus, and especially Gerry Mulligan, who he worked with from 1954 until 1968. His own solo or headline album credits, often as head of "The Dave Bailey Sextet," include One Foot in the Gutter (1960), its sequel Two Feet in the Gutter, and the appropriately onomatopoeically titled Bash! (both 1961). In 1969, Bailey returned to the military as a pilot and flight instructor. He later continued his musical involvement as an executive director of the arts and educational institution Jazzmobile, Inc. in New York City. Lieutenant Dave Bailey was a male Human Starfleet officer who lived during the mid-23rd century. He served in the command division aboard the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk, during a historic five-year mission that starship undertook. In 2266, he served as one of the ship's navigators; he was promoted to lieutenant a short time before stardate 1512. Bailey was on duty during a star mapping mission that same year, when, on the third day, the Enterprise encountered a warning buoy, and later the First Federation flagship Fesarius. The tension of the encounter detracted from the gung-ho lieutenant's performance and might have ruined his career. Initially relieved of duty for a near nervous breakdown, he requested permission to return to his work even though the ship was apparently seconds from being destroyed, confirming Kirk positively assessing his character and fitness for bridge duty. At the conclusion of the encounter, when Kirk put together an away mission to visit Balok's pilot vessel, he offered to take Bailey, to give him "a look at the unknown." When Balok commented how lonely he was, and suggested that even an alien would be welcome company, Kirk looked to Bailey, who eagerly volunteered.
