  • A navigator was the person on board a ship responsible for its navigation. The primary responsibility of the navigator was to be aware of ship position at all times. Other responsibilities include planning the journey, advising the captain or commander of estimated timing to destinations while en route, and ensuring hazards were avoided. Some ships may have more than one navigators.
  • A navigator is a person trained to record and alter a vessel's position relative to grid coordinates using terrestrial or celestial techniques. A Starfleet Navigator usually trains at the rank of Ensign. Upon completing the Starfleet Academy prescribed courses for navigation aboard a Starfleet vessel, a navigator usually is posted as a Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) and advances to the rank of Lieutenant after two years of service as approved by the Captain. Ensign navigators are Ops Officers and part of the Command track to eventually serve as a Captain upon appointment and assumption of a command vessel.

Tips
  • *Because the camera switches to the controlled projectile's perspective while in flight, Navigator can be used as a reconnaissance tool by firing a controlled projectile into a room and flying it around to scout for the presence of enemies. *Weapons with relatively slow-moving projectiles, like the Paris and the Glaive are more suitable for being controlled by Navigator for the purposes of attacking multiple enemies. *As Navigator consumes energy upon controlling a projectile, activating the ability after firing a projectile will use up less energy than pre-casting the ability. *Firing Kulstar then tapping Navigator on after it impacts will allow control of one of the child grenades. This can be a good "clean up" tool when facing large dispersed groups. *Firing the Sonicor with this ability gives it infinite range. *Using this ability with Torid will effect the ticks the cloud deals based on the damage multiplier. *Using this ability with a Syndicate weapon or an Augmented weapon can allow you to clean out enemies both at your location and your projectile's location essentially allowing you to be in two places at once.

Notes
  • The Navigator was a crewmember in his former life. When he was shipwrecked he was forced to dive deep underwater where he eventually encountered the Deeplings. The Deeplings believed the Navigator's figure resembled that of their god, Qjell, and hailed him as though he were. He is now commanding the Deeplings, leading a war against The Hive.

  • Navigator formed whilst students at the University of East Anglia (UEA) and began rehearsing at the Noisebox studios in norwich. Evocative of contemporaries, Mogwai, they were also compared to Tortoise and Bark Psychosis. Their first single "Killtaker" (nbx022, black vinyl) sold out of its 500 pressing in three weeks. The single attracted the attention of major record companies, music press and John Peel. The second single, "A little astronomy" (nbx026) was a similar success selling out of its blue vinyl 500 pressing in just one week. By now there was a real buzz about the band and their third single "When the wires fall" (nbx027, red vinyl) saw them tour the uk with mogwai, temporarily recruiting telstar ponies' brendan o'hare on drums after sam fell ill with appendicitus on the first night of the tour. The single also made it into the indie top ten by selling out of its 750 pressing in one day and an amateur video appeared on itv's "The Chart Show". the band played some great support gigs at this time to people like David Thomas (ex-pere ubu) and Novak. The band became more interested in experimenting and deconstructing found sounds and tape loops and were looking to move away from the song-based structures of the early singles. their fourth single for noisebox, "Assay ep" (nbx028/nbx028cd) was the point at which sam left the band to pursue a successful career in journalism. The "Assay ep" was released on a double-pack 7" (clear vinyl) which sold out and a cd single which did not. Due to contractual reasons tied up with their publishing contract with Island Music, the band went on to record their debut album for the Swarfinger label rather than for Noisebox Records. "Nostalgie" sold out of its vinyl pressing and the band played a few, increasingly radical shows where they would improvise sounds for the length of the set. sometimes it worked, sometimes not. There is a compilation album of navigator's singles for the noisebox records label available on Burning Shed . The limited vinyl releases all of these sold out very quickly."II (novo)" originally appeared on the cover-mounted cd which came with a magazine called "Sessions". the magazine is now defunct and the print run was small, so this is quite rare. Consensus within the band is that this is actually a much better version of the song.Matt Elliott's remix of Assay (under his "Third Eye Foundation" name) was undertaken as a favour to the band as an associate of theirs. It deconstructs the track completely and uses elements of other tracks from the Assay ep too. This was originally available as a limited vinyl version on the swarfinger label.

(Star Trek: Enterprise) On Federation Starfleet vessels of the 23rd century, the navigator was a bridge officer, while the helm officer's role was usually combined with that of the tactical officer. (Star Trek: The Original Series) By the 24th century, navigator responsibilities were once again merged with those of the helmsman to form the position of flight controller, or conn. (Star Trek: The Next Generation) The Mikhal Travelers' ships only utilized a pilot and a navigator. (VOY: "Darkling") Fred Noonan described himself as Amelia Earhart's navigator. (VOY: "The 37's") In 2268, Spock opined that the M-5 multitronic unit could have taken the USS Enterprise to its current location as easily s a navigator could have. (TOS: "The Ultimate Computer" )

  • The origins of the Navigators have long been lost to antiquity like so much of the Imperium’s history, forgotten and buried beneath the weight of millennia of strife and decay. They are an ancient mutated or deliberately engineered psyker strain of Mankind "designed" to facilitate Warp travel. Clannish and insular, they have lived amongst humans since the time of the Dark Age of Technology and during the nightmarish centuries of the Age of Strife dwindled to extinction. It is not known how this unique sub-sepcies of humans first came into existence, though they may have been the result of long-forbidden genetic tampering with the human genome in a long-ago age. Some Imperial scholars suspect (paradoxically) the hand of the Emperor if not in the Navigators' original creation, then perhaps in their recreation and certain increase in numbers during the Age of the Imperium -- as their Houses gathered to Him and pledged Him fealty after His conquest of Terra during the Unification Wars. The Emperor in person granted a charter to those Navigator groups who swore Him fealty, granting them His legal protection in exchange for their services as steersmen for the many starships of the nascent Imperium. Those extreme few amongst Imperial savants who have access to the remaining archives of records dating back to the Unification Wars of the late 30th Millennium believe that, not unlike the Thunder Warriors, the Navigators were only tolerated by the Emperor as a stop-gap measure until His Imperial Webway project was completed and were to be eliminated afterwards as undesirable and potentially dangerous mutants, but with the destruction of the Imperial Webway and the internment of the Emperor upon the Golden Throne after the Battle of Terra at the end of the Horus Heresy, the once-temporary solutions to Imperial problems of interstellar travel and communication offered by the Navigators and the psychic beacon known as the Astronomican became permanent. In the late 41st Millennium, the Navigator Houses are still considered to be under the direct protection of the Emperor Himself in exchange for their unique brand of service to humanity. Whatever the cause of its appearance, the "Navigator Gene," as it is now known, has endured across thousands of Terran years and without it, much like the Astropaths' psychic gifts, the Imperium would not exist and certainly could not be maintained. This mutation has not endured through accident, but through careful cultivation. A Navigator is the result of focused selective breeding and rigorous genetic screening by their House at every stage of their development. The unique psychic powers of the Navigators are passed down through each generation. The Navigator Gene, which is recessive, can only be preserved by intermarriage -- it is lost when a Navigator breeds with an ordinary human who does not possess the gene. This factor has led to the development of the closely-related Navigator families. Even when they attain the rank of full Navigator and leave the protection of their House to take up the task to which their nature calls them, their family ties remain strong and bind them tight, reminding them where their true duty lies. Navigators are genetically empowered to see into the Warp directly without risking instant insanity or death and hence guide a vessel as it attempts to plot a course in that otherworldly dimension. This is possible because psykers of all kinds, Navigators included, use the Empyrean to empower their gifts and to this role of guiding their fellows through the currents of the Warp the Navigator is uniquely adapted. A human starship without a Navigator to guide it cannot hope to travel far without quickly being lost in the maelstrom of the Immaterium and destroyed. Even so a Navigator's ability only enables them to chart relatively short journeys through the Warp with any degree of certainty, particularly where the Immaterium is tumult, but combined with the Emperor's creation of the great beacon known as the Astronomican, the Navigator's range was greatly expanded and without them the Great Crusade and the expansion of the burgeoning Imperium of Man would not have been possible. Whilst the Navigator serves the single purpose of guiding starships through the Warp, and has evolved admirably for this task, they are also capable of far greater control over the strange power they wield and putting it to other uses. These strange and little understood psychic powers seem to result from a Navigator’s unique affinity for the Warp, another gift of their altered genetic makeup. Little is known about how a Navigator's Warp affinity works, or exactly how it is that many Navigators are able to not only look into the Warp but also enact their will on it to some extent, making subtle changes to its currents and tides.

While many navigators must have basic knowledge and ability to use the common tools and abilities of their trade, they are also required to pick up on new matters that make traveling across the seas easier and better. In particular, navigators traveling through the Grand Line must gain an accumulation with the Log Pose, the only known compass that can travel through this part of the world. Due to its intricate and delicate nature and its special attributes such as coordinating with an island's magnetic field and the ability to point in directions not normally known for travel (such as the sky or the depths of the ocean), navigators must come to grips and understanding the nature both of this compass and of the world upon which the Grand Line is part of and assist in allowing the rest of the crew to make necessary adjustments in their ship so they can follow the desired path. Without an active navigator, particularly in the Grand Line with an understanding of the Log Pose, journey becomes much more difficult leading to the crew getting lost, like Brook once he revived, or coming across unexpected matters whether or not they are already mapped out. In One Piece, navigators are the most crucial members of a ship, especially when traveling the Grand Line. Whenever a member of a crew, be it pirates or marines, is seen with a Log Pose tied to their wrists, their position as their respective crew's navigator becomes immediately evident, since Log Poses are one of the most crucial tools of a navigator. A ship is only as good as the navigator that directs it. Otherwise, the ship will be damaged or shipwrecked by unforeseen obstacles. A strong example of this is when the Barto Club is caught in a hail strom and have no idea what to do, because they have no navigator despite being in the New World. Unlike other members of crews, such as captains, doctors or chefs, navigators aren't formally introduced. Characters that are classified as navigators are rare, despite how important they are to the ship.

In days of old, a navigator worked from a known position or fix. Using time, heading and speed, the navigator would compute a Dead Reckoning (DR) position that could be used to obtain a fix based upon a Line of Position (LOP). When navigating by land, an LOP can be used from a prominent point as sighted by a sextant. Waypoints, or desired fixes, were used as a point for a computational DR positions along a route on a navigational chart. Where the LOP intersects with the DR becomes the new fix and is entered into the navigator's log as the basis for navigation from this point on. The more LOPs obtained directly determine the fix accuracy. Navigators have served on almost every type of vessel known to the United Federation of Planets. In modern navigation theory, one LOP and a DR equate to a Most Probable Position (MPP) that can be used as a fix if the navigator deems it the best and most accurate information available. Two or three LOPs are considered more desirable because the intersection of LOPs is the definition of a fix. Three LOPS, whose lines form an equilateral triangle, was considered the best fix as the MPP is within the triangle. The tighter the triangle; the tighter the fix. This is essentially two dimensional navigation. In the open seas navigators truly mastered their profession and earned their bacon. A navigator would navigate by celestial observations of the sun, moon, stars and planets. The early Egyptians and Phoenicians charted the known Old World. Their charts were highly prized because terrestrial LOPs could be computed using their depictions of land and sea. Two of the more accomplished navigators ever were Magellan and Vasco da Gama. A sailing ship's Captain often was the navigator because they were wizards in determining new routes the undiscovered country or territory. The HMS Enterprize or Enterprise under the command of Captain J. Paul, circa 1705, is the first sailing ship to bear the name that would become legend in Star Trek. Eventually their navigational feats around the world inspired a British competition to devise an accurate chronometer or watch that could accurately keep time which is a very important entering argument in celestial navigation. The invention of the atomic clock can be seen as the direct descendant of the chronometer and the requirement for accurate time signals. NON-CANON follows: Atomic clocks in the 21st century eventually gave way to time buoys as developed by Doctor Salvador Pacheco, who won an intergalactic competition to create The Atomic Clock in the Stars Device (ACSD), which enabled starship navigators like Checkov aboard the USS Enterprise to navigate amongst the stars. NON-CANON ends. Navigation in the air used the same DR procedures and incorporated radar, basic navigation systems (BNS that basically navigated using time, heading and airspeed to compute a DR position using Doppler signals) and Inertial Navigation Systems (INS). LORAN and Omega were early radio based systems that preceded INS. Aerial navigation is three dimensional navigation. During the 1960s, the United States of America launched the first satellite, Transit, that was used by the US military. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the United States Air Force (USAF), launched a series of satellites that enable Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to navigate with pinpoint precision from "Point A to Point B". A GPS syncs its time signal with the satellites to determine its position determined by the intersection to of the satellite LOPs. Sputnik, the first satellite launched by the mid 20th century nation known as Russia, involved complicated three dimensional navigation that is depicted in the opening scenes of Star Trek: Enterprise. Prior to Zepram Cochrane's launch of the first human warp capable starship, the Vulcans devised a series of star charts that were highly prized for the star trek to other worlds. Starfleet (a direct descendant of the USAF), and the United Federation of Planets would eventually establish a treaty with the Vulcans for usage of their star charts.
