At the Arlington National Cemetery Stalker and Snake-Eyes are confronted by Fred II who tells them he is Wade Collins, their fellow Long Range Recon Patrol comrade whom they left for dead in Vietnam but survived and since had plastic surgery that has made him into a Fred clone. He takes at gun point to his car and makes Snake-Eyes drive. As they head for New York he explains that they left him, Dickie Saperstein and Ramon Escobedo for dead. Dickie and Ramon were and Stalker thought Wade was as well. Wade explains: :The six man patrol were creeping through a valley in the jungle when someone stepped on a twig. Wade was walking point so angry as he was most likely to get shot at first. He was distracted by this and wandered into a Vietcong ambush. The patrol returned fire but Ramon and Wade were both hit and Dickie trod on a landmine. The others escaped but didn't take Wade with them. The Vietcong did and took him to a tunnel under a village where a surgeon dug the bullets out of him. He then spent two years in a prison camp. He curses the others for not finishing him off. Outside Springfield Candy's car has broken down. She hails a lift from another car that passes, driven by Curt who drinks a "special" coffee. Inside Springfield Buzzer leaps off a train and walks into town to find it deserted. Suddenly Firefly appears on a Ferret, together with a new Cobra operative called Scrap-Iron, and tells him to keep quiet. Inside the town police station the Soft Master has knocked out all but one of the police officers and makes the only one conscious access the computer to retrieve information on the Hard Master's murder. He also advises against reaching for the pistol at his ankle. Outside the town Candy discovers the Soft Master's suitcase is still in the care. Chuck suddenly remembers it was left by his previous passenger and Candy suggests he goes back to return it. She also pours herself a cup of coffee. On the road to New York Wade tells how he came home when the war ended and immediately on arrival in New York a female hippy spat in his face and called him a baby killer. Then his wife's lawyer arrived with divorce papers. He also found it hard to get a job with many employers refusing to take vets on. He took to wandering the United States and came to a small town where he saw a poster for Cobra. They took him in and gave him rank, influence, respect and power so he felt he belonged. When the Crimson Guard unit was formed he had plastic surgery and became a "Fred" like others. He was then sent to replace Fred Broca and took over his family. Stalker argues that Cobra are just using him and there are other options open to him. At the Springfield police station the Soft Master has found the information he sought. Suddenly more police officers burst in. The Soft Master charges through them and makes it outside, seen by Firefly, Scrap-Iron and Buzzer, and steals a police car. Outside Springfield Billy is hitch-hiking with two nuns who note he is a boy at peace with himself. They drop him by the road and he hails Chuck's approaching car. Meanwhile the Soft Master takes off with the Ferret in pursuit. Firefly launches a missile but the Soft Master speeds the police car under a chicken lorry, knocking off the car's hood, with the missile destroying the lorry. Meanwhile Candy has discovered that Chuck's coffee is almost entirely brandy. She suggests she take over the wheel but Chuck argues he's sober enough to drive. Meanwhile Billy sees a vision of the Grim Reaper striking the car. The Soft Master sees a level crossing with a freight training heading along the tracks. He speeds past the train just before it blocks the road, and passes Chuck's car where Candy is trying to correct the steering. Suddenly the car crashes into the train and catches fire. The train keeps the pursuing Cobra agents on the other side of the tracks but Scrap-Iron climbs a telegraph pole. The Soft Master looks back and sees Chuck's car on fire with three people trapped inside and turns back to save them. Scrap-Iron sees the Soft Master trying to open the car door and fires a missile. The Soft Master sees it and leaps in the way to save the others. Scrap-Iron asks Firefly what to do about the others. Firefly gives a thumbs down and Scrap-Iron fires another missile, destroying the car. On Staten Island Wade calls the Broca family into the room and tells them that Stalker and Snake-Eyes are his friends - real friends. "A real friend will tell you when you're being stupid and that's what I've been. A fool who was used by Cobra and was too dense to now a good thing when he had it..." He reminds them that he isn't Fred Broca but burnt out Wade Collins. Stalker and Snake-Eyes had almost convinced him to ask the family to come away with him to somewhere that Cobra couldn't find them, but even though he'd be the happiest man of Earth he can't ask them as they deserve something better than a substitute they never asked for and didn't want He says goodbye and heads out the door. But then Sean calls "Dad!" Crying Wade turns as the family tells him they will come with him. They board the car and drive off. Stalker tells Snake-Eyes that they could have taken Wade in for debriefing and discovered many Cobra secrets, but equally they could have brought him out of the valley and he wouldn't have had so many wasted years, and they owed him that much. Snake-Eyes concurs.

Situated in a half-circle before the dais are five fine half-thrones, similar to the Royal seat but lesser in stature and ornament. "I speak not merely of infidelity, but also of your nephew's troubles with the Church of True Light," Gell Mikin says somberly. He takes a sip from his goblet, then continues: "If he goes before the patronage of the Church with only the excuse of flying off the handle about his wife's affair, then I fear that Lord Adaer will suffer dearly and your house - the House of your Emperor - will remain scandalized. While she may very well *be* Shadow-Touched, I have never experienced that from her. I have never seen any evidence in her action to suggest it. All three just made terrible mistakes. "The Church takes an exceedingly dim view of being abused in this fashion, Lord Markus. The Church will show no mercy to your nephew. It cannot afford to, lest its credibility be damaged." He shakes his head, sighing. "No, they will show no mercy, and if you seek to protect this woman, it will be to his further detriment. However, it is within my purview to see that this woman is dealt with, should you suspect your nephew and Lord Cygony might have been unduly influenced by magical abilities secretly manifested by Lady Dianna Lomasa." Markus Kahar arches a brow, "... and, when the Shadowscourges investigate Dianna and find that she has no Shadowtouch? With all due respect, my good Hawk, I cannot lie to the Church. If they wish to investigate her I would support that, however I have no reason to suspect it. I believe she would be clean from it, were they to do... whatever the Lightmaidens do... to root it out. But this is the truth as I know it. It shames House Kahar and the Emperor, however, it would shame him more for his own cousin to lie to save the reputation of his family." "Were you to allow me to handle this matter, she would never be investigated by the Scourges," the Emperor's Hawk intones ominously. He leans back in his chair, lifts the goblet from the side table and takes a sip. Markus Kahar sighs softly, "... yet she will burn. She is pregnant with childe." Gell Mikin shakes his head. "No. Not burn. We do not burn the Shadow-Touched, my lord. That honor is reserved for the untainted like you and me. No, she would become a Lesser. She would be sent off, a slave in some mine in a distant corner of the realm. Forgotten. Her child could be adopted by a respectable family." Markus Kahar makes a face, taking a long drink of mulled wine. He stares at the rim of the cup for a long moment until the creek of an outside door opening brings his thoughts back to the moment. The servants arriving from Temple. At last he speaks. "Your arguments are convincing. Doubtlessly, it would save Adaer and the reputation of my house and my family. But if I were to tell you that I believe Dianna Lomasa carries the staint of the Shadow, it would all be built on a lie. There has been enough untruths. I would like to believe that my generation still has some honour left." The Emperor's Hawk sets his goblet on the side table. Then he regards Markus Kahar once more. "Your steadfast devotion to honor is admirable, Lord Markus, make no mistake. But know this: You stand at a personal crossroads. April agrees to meet this stranger. April cautions that if this man has information she will go back and rescue Benrime, and she'll need help - Na'ane says she would not let April go alone. As April mounts the pier, she sees a red flare go overhead: shaking her head over the celebrations getting out of hand, she walks on. She arrives, then turns in surprise to see her 'visitor'. Again, we go back a few minutes: Kian Alvane, dressed as one of the Rebels, is lingering outside one of the houses, unmarked. As he waits, he sees a red flare overhead, puzzles over it briefly, then continues on his way. He is surprised by the obvious care the Rebels have for each other. He meets Na'ane and speaks to her, asking she fulfil her part of the bargain. Na'ane tells him the Scorpion is waiting for him on the pier. Kian goes on his way. April turns to see her visitor is the Azadi soldier she met outside Friar's Keep. Horrified, she thinks she has led an infiltrator right to their camp. Kian is shocked to see her. Moved, he gives an impassioned speech: his time in the Northlands has opened his eyes. He believes the Goddess has led him on a unique path, that She has led him to April, a woman not afraid to speak her mind and tell him the truth. He says he wants to return to Sadir, and tell the Six that what is happening here is wrong. Finally, April listens to him, convinced of his honour - at least enough to tell him her name. But she's confused: why did Na'ane say that Kian had information for her? Suddenly, overhead, Azadi Cloudships - battleships - appear over the Swamp City. As April and Kian watch, horrified, ropes drop from the ships and soldiers begin climbing down. Among them is Commander Vamon, who sweeps across to Kian in triumph. He finally has proof positive that Kian has defected and betrayed his people. Kian orders Vamon to stop: the Rebels are civilians, women, children. Vamon is more interested in knowing if Kian has finally found his target - Kian says he had come to find the Scorpion but was led to April instead. April whispers the name, 'Scorpion' - the name the Azadi gave to her, after she had killed so many. Thinking he brought the soldiers here and was buying time, her tentative trust in Kian is shattered. Vamon orders Kian to kill April. He has several possible responses, but finally refuses to do it. Vamon nods to one of his soldiers, who stabs April in the stomach with his halberd. She staggers back and falls from the pier. Furious, Kian turns on Vamon, who arrests him - and thanks him, for leading the Azadi right to the rebel hideout. Vowing revenge, Kian is taken away as Vamon orders the destruction of the Swamp City. Watching in horror, Zoë can do nothing to help... then a large hand is put over her mouth. Chawan pulls her quietly into one of the huts, away from the battle. As Brynn frets over April's death, Chawan counsels escape, to fight another day. But Zoë cannot come with them, it's too dangerous. Remembering what happened to Zoë before, Chawan pours a magic sedating powder on the fire, and tells her to inhale the fumes. Zoë tries, but it doesn't seem to work. She begins to panic, then suddenly vanishes, as abruptly as she did at the Dark People's Library. As Azadi soldiers start hammering on the door, Chawan tells Brynn they must escape, but as the scene blacks out, we hear the door break and Brynn's desperate battle cry "For Raven!!" while Chawan shouts "No!"
