William Howard Taft William Howard Taft William Howard Taft William Howard Taft
rdfs:comment
William Howard Taft was President of the United States during the early 20th century. He was noted for his immense weight. The town of Hartsfield's Landing first predicted the winner of the United States presidential election during Taft's presidential run. As President, Taft was heavily involved in the growing sport of baseball. He was the founder of the seventh inning stretch. In 1910, Taft was the first President to throw out the first pitch at a Washington Senators game. Before becoming President, Taft, a Republican, was appointed to serve on the Superior Court of Cincinnati in 1887. In 1890, Taft was appointed Solicitor General of the United States and in 1891 a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. In 1900, President William McKinley appointed Taft Governor-General of the Philippines. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Taft Secretary of War in an effort to groom Taft, then his close political ally, into his handpicked presidential successor. Taft assumed a prominent role in problem solving, assuming on some occasions the role of acting Secretary of State, while declining repeated offers from Roosevelt to serve on the Supreme Court. William Howard Taft (September 15, 1857 – March 8, 1930) was the 27th President of the United States (1909–1913) and later the tenth Chief Justice of the United States (1921–1930). He is the only person to have served in both of these offices. Before becoming President, Taft, a Republican, was selected to serve on the Superior Court of Cincinnati in 1887. American president from 1909-1913. Also served as Governer-General of the Philippines from 1901-1903 (they named an avenue after him), and Chief Justice of the United States from 1921-1930. New Mexico and Arizona became states during his Presidency. One probably apocryphal legend credits him for "the seventh inning stretch". The last President to have a moustache, or indeed, facial hair of any kind, possibly reflecting a rather unfortunate bias against it. Also the first president to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. William Howard Taft was a United States president who was elected in 1908. In the early 1990s, Indiana Jones mentioned Taft to a woman at an art auction when he began telling her the story of his time in Paris during his father's world lecture tour. Roosevelt then formed the Progressive Party, also known as the Bull Moose Party, and ran as its nominee for President against Taft. The election of 1912 was the last time an incumbent President running for re-election came in lower than second place; Taft won 2 states, Roosevelt won 6 states, while Democrat Woodrow Wilson won 40 states and the Presidency. However, Taft's people, not Roosevelt's, continued to control the Republican Party, making it suck as we know it today. A fictionalized version of Taft was portrayed by J.J. Gordon in the film Mercedes Ray. In the movie, Taft is parodied as a large man of even larger appetites. thumb|250px|William Taft. William Howard Taft (September 15, 1857 – March 8, 1930) was an American politician, the 27th President of the United States, serving from 1909 to 1913. He was also the 10th Chief Justice of the United States (1921-1930), 42nd Secretary of War (1904-1908) and scion of a leading political family, the Tafts, of Ohio, which included his son Senator Robert Taft. William Howard Taft was an avid golfer. He was overweight for much of his adult life. In fact, weighing in at around 340 pounds, Taft was the heaviest president in US history.

Riding a wave of popular support for fellow Republican Roosevelt, Taft won an easy victory in his 1908 bid for the presidency. In his only term, Taft's domestic agenda emphasized trust-busting, civil service reform, strengthening the Interstate Commerce Commission, improving the performance of the postal service, and passage of the Sixteenth Amendment. Abroad, Taft sought to further the economic development of nations in Latin America and Asia through "Dollar Diplomacy", and showed decisiveness and restraint in response to revolution in Mexico. The task-oriented Taft was oblivious to the political ramifications of his decisions, often alienated his own key constituencies, and was overwhelmingly defeated in his bid for a second term in the presidential election of 1912. In surveys of presidential scholars, Taft is usually ranked near the middle of lists of all American Presidents. After leaving office, Taft spent his time in academia, arbitration, and the pursuit of world peace through his self-founded League to Enforce Peace. In 1921, after the First World War, President Warren G. Harding appointed Taft Chief Justice of the United States. He served in this capacity until shortly before his death in 1930. Known for being pretty heavy and once getting stuck in his own bathtub. We also all know that the Oval Office used to be called the Round Office until he walked in. Funny enough, his presidency led to at least 80 pounds' weight loss, and he became more interested in the outdoors afterward. As America: The Book pointed out, he was also the only President to become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, but nobody remembers that. It's worth noting that becoming Chief Justice was his life's dream: he only ran for president because T.R. and his wife wanted him to (ironically, his wife suffered a stroke shortly after his inauguration and was never able to enjoy her office as much as she might have liked). Taft was appointed to the court by Warren Harding, and is the only former president to have administered the oath of office to an incoming president (He did it for both Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover). The last President to have a moustache, or indeed, facial hair of any kind, possibly reflecting a rather unfortunate bias against it. Also the first president to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. William Howard Taft (September 15, 1857– March 8, 1930) was the 27th President of the United States of America, serving from 1909-1913. thumb|250px|William Taft. William Howard Taft was a United States president who was elected in 1908. In the early 1990s, Indiana Jones mentioned Taft to a woman at an art auction when he began telling her the story of his time in Paris during his father's world lecture tour. A fictionalized version of Taft was portrayed by J.J. Gordon in the film Mercedes Ray. In the movie, Taft is parodied as a large man of even larger appetites. In 1890, Taft was appointed Solicitor General of the United States and in 1891 a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
