In 2005, she received a Master's degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication. She has since worked on a documentary about servicemen returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan called "Operation Homecoming."

Parlen also appeared on several television series including episodes of Hardball (1989, with Harvey Jason, Marcelo Tubert and Valerie Wildman and directed by Larry Shaw), L.A.
