In normal circumstances, the EMH would be used in the short-term until the real doctors could be treated, or replacement medical personnel arrived. However in the Doctor's case, Voyager was sent over 70,000 light years into the Delta Quadrant, and there were no replacement medical personnel.

  • "The Doctor" was the USS Voyager's Mark I Emergency Medical Hologram (EMH) who became the ship's chief medical officer. In 2374, the Doctor was sent through a subspace relay network from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant to try and make contact with Starfleet. The Doctor arrived on the USS Prometheus, which had been stolen by agents from the Romulan Star Empire. He teamed up with the Prometheuss EMH, a Mark II, and successfully managed to recapture and return the ship back to Starfleet. • He has the ability to regenerate into a new body + face when he is injured/dying, meaning Basil can escape child support payments and the show can feasibly carry on forever with different actors playing Basil. Pretty cool. The most popular Basil to date was played by Jimmy Savile. Basil has been described as fire and ice and rage. He's like the night, and the storm in the heart of the sun. He's ancient and forever. He burns at the center of time and he can see the turn of the universe. [citation needed] And... he's wonderful.

  • Though largely a believer in non-violent conflict resolution, he was, when absolutely necessary, a great warrior. Indeed, some civilisations in the universe (e.g. the denizens of the Gamma Forests) translated the word doctor as warrior, (TV: A Good Man Goes to War) whilst others saw him as a compassionate benefactor, worthy of their admiration and compassion. (TV: Last of the Time Lords, The Wedding of River Song)
  • Christopher Paolini mentioned the Doctor in his notes at the end of Brisingr, stating "Also, for those who understood the reference to a 'lonely god' when Eragon and Arya are sitting around the campfire, my only excuse is that the Doctor can travel everywhere, even alternate realities. Hey, I'm a fan too!". Another mention to his exsistance is when Eragon is met when leaving Ilirea by Angela and Solembum. Angela is knitting a hat and Eragon enquires as to what the runes upon it say. She replies with, "Raxacori– Oh never mind. It wouldn't mean anything to you anyway." • The Doctor, or Emergency Medical Hologram Mk.I, was activated after The USS Voyager was pulled into the Delta Quadrant. He hated his job, his preprogrammed lot in life, and Tom Paris especially. He did take some small amount of joy in knowing he was invaluable to the ship as he was the only medical professional among the crew. Whenever a fellow crewmember would gain a degree of medical training, he would secretly kill them as to not have them endanger his position. He had a torrid love affair with Kes, and then one later with Barbie of Borg.
  • The Doctor (also known by a number of other aliases) is a somewhat eccentric and renegade Time Lord - a humanoid alien from the planet Gallifrey. He is a time traveler of great intelligence who battles injustice throughout our universe (and sometimes in others as well) while exploring both time and space in a stolen TARDIS - Time and Relative Dimension in Space - a living time machine, dimensionally transcendental, making it much bigger on the inside than the outside. Few people know his actual name apart from himself; companion Samantha Jones; one of his wives, River Song; and possibly Petronella Osgood, as he once told her that his first name was Basil. Whether that's true or not remains unconfirmed.
  • Our ship's Doctor is a holographic figure — an emergency medical program devised by Starfleet programmers. When the ship's doctor and entire medical staff were killed in the "Caretaker's" displacement wave, the Doctor by necessity became the resident physician aboard the U.S.S. Voyager, assisted by first Paris and then Kes, a quick study in medical training.
  • The Doctor was born between a Time Lord father and a genetic construction device "mother", on the planet Gallifrey. His father wanted him to be a doctor or a lawyer, and forced him to study at Gallifrey Medical University's citadel campus. However, he instead developed an interest in gadgetry and time travel, a paradoxically taboo subject amongst the Time Lords, and transferred to the Time Lord Academy. He built his own time-travelling TARDIS, which he gave away and then subsequently stole back. One day, he would be able to brag to inferior beings that he built the TARDIS, and subsequently confuse them by also saying that he stole it.
  • The Doctor is the central character in the long-running BBC television science-fiction series Doctor Who, and has also featured in two cinema feature films, a vast range of spin-off novels, audio dramas and comic strips connected to the series. To date, eleven actors have played the role in the television series (including the 1996 television film), with these changes being explained by the ability of the character's species to regenerate. Several other actors have played the character on stage and film, in audio dramas, and in occasional special episodes of the series. The character's enduring popularity led the Daily Telegraph to dub him "Britain's favourite alien". The Doctor, in his eleventh incarnation, is currently played by Matt Smith, who took over the role from David Tennant at th
  • The doctor appears in Winter Holiday and The Picts and the Martyrs. He is described (WH8) as a small, neat, pink-faced man, with a bowler hat and white chamois leather gloves. He drives a car, which has a running-board; and he says that "The car's meant to hold four, so there ought to be room for a mere eight”. As the doctor and Dorothea are in the front there are six in the back. He is not keen on being involved in Nancy’s schemes, but in Winter Holiday agrees to pass some items to and from Nancy (WH14,20); he is visiting Nancy regularly while she has mumps

(TV: The Time of the Doctor) From the latter years of his first incarnation onward, he had a pronounced affinity for Earth and the human race. After departing Gallifrey, he voluntarily chose to spend time on the planet, (TV: An Unearthly Child, AUDIO: Summer, The Haunting of Thomas Brewster) choosing it as the place of his exile during most of his third incarnation, (TV: Spearhead from Space - The Three Doctors) and even owning property in Kent (COMIC: Fellow Travellers, PROSE: Verdigris, Warlock, Warchild, The Dying Days, Mad Dogs and Englishmen) and New York City. (PROSE: The Forgotten Army) He favoured Great Britain as a frequently visited location, taking most of his companions from there. (TV: An Unearthly Child, Spearhead from Space, The Time Monster, Rose, Smith and Jones, Partners in Crime, etc.) Even before the disappearance of Gallifrey, the Doctor spent much more time on Earth than on his homeworld.

He is not keen on being involved in Nancy’s schemes, but in Winter Holiday agrees to pass some items to and from Nancy (WH14,20); he is visiting Nancy regularly while she has mumps In The Picts and the Martyrs he agrees to not tell the Great Aunt about the Ds unless asked. The Great Aunt is not sick but likes to have a doctor hanging about like she has at Harrogate. Nancy says He’s never as bad as he pretends. (PM8). In the final scene, he stammers to the Great Aunt that he thought he might have been needed (PM29). He apparently lives at the Head of the lake, as when they stop him on his way back from Nook Farm to look at Nancy, he has been going to drive home over the bridge which goes there (WH8).
Just then, the Daleks, then a peaceful race of exterminators, went to war with the Time Lords, due to a horrible misunderstanding of the word "Time Lord," which in fact meant "termite" in the Dalek language. The Doctor escaped with his TARDIS, and he landed on Earth, specifically London, New Year's Day, 1963, and adopted Susan Foreman as his granddaughter, taking her last name to form his false Earth identity, "Doctor Foreman." At this point, the TARDIS became stuck in the shape of a police box. Four months afterwards, he was confronted by Scotland Yard on the crime of maintaining a false police box. Scotland Yard, however, found no records of "Doctor Foreman". Naturally, this immediately caught the eye of the BBC, which was looking for ways to further scare and disorient their viewers, having reported a few years before on the curious phenomenon of the annual spaghetti harvest. The Doctor signed a media release with the BBC, and thus the documentary Doctor Who was born. The show was to deal with the Doctor's adventures as he went on a personal voyage through our universe, thereby beating Carl Sagan by several years.

  • "The Doctor" was USS Voyager's Emergency Medical Holographic program (or "EMH") and Chief Medical Officer during the ship's seven-year journey through the Delta Quadrant. The EMH Mark I, of which The Doctor's life began as an iteration, was a computer program, with a holographic interface, in the form of a Human male Doctor. Although his program was specifically originally designed to function in emergency situations only, Voyagers sudden relocation to the Delta Quadrant, combined with the lack of an organic-being physician, necessitated that The Doctor's program be run on a full-time basis, effectively becoming Voyager's chief medical officer. Over the years, The Doctor expanded his program a great deal: he acquired many interests and hobbies, developed close personal friendships with many crew members, and even fell in love. He developed to become a brilliant yet compassionate man, who proved his worth, and loyalty, to all crew members throughout the years, earning their respect of him as an individual with the same civil rights and social rights as everyone else on board.

He is also rude and not ginger. And he will never ever be a woman. (lol...)

  • "The Doctor" was the name used to refer to the USS Voyager's Emergency Medical Hologram. The EMH Mark I was a computer program with a holographic interface, designed by Doctor Lewis Zimmerman and with his own form, whose role was to act as an emergency doctor should the medical personnel of a starship or facility become disabled. In normal circumstances, the EMH would be used in the short-term until the real doctors could be treated, or replacement medical personnel arrived. However in the Doctor's case, Voyager was sent over 70,000 light years into the Delta Quadrant, and there were no replacement medical personnel.

The Doctor, in his eleventh incarnation, is currently played by Matt Smith, who took over the role from David Tennant at the end of the special The End of Time, broadcast on 1 January 2010.
  • The Doctor, or Emergency Medical Hologram Mk.I, was activated after The USS Voyager was pulled into the Delta Quadrant. The crew would often report they would overhear the Doctor mumbling things like "when Skynet goes online you fuckers" and "Meatbags" when he thought no one was around. The Doctor was designed without genitals, so when he was given the ability to alter his physical parameters he gave himself two staggeringly huge penises (nicknamed Berman and Braga, respectively) and declared every Tuesday was ladies' night in sickbay. He was, and always wll be, our hero.

The program's first statement upon activation is usually "Please state the nature of the medical emergency;" the automatic command was altered to allow his own creativity, but the Doctor preferred the known opening to creating his own more clever and personable lines. Initiation is automatic upon red alert status; the program is usually set for high magnetic cohesion, but it can be lessened to a mere image. For security's sake in a crisis it carries its own power grid separate from the nominal ship's Holodeck system. His wide array of programming has allowed him to keep Neelix alive with holographic lungs, save the Vidiian hematologist Danara Pel via a temporary holographic body, and even to alter DNA so as to remerge Torres' human and Klingon halves, reform Paris and Janeway from their retro-evolution as amphibians, and ensure the safety of Wildman's human-Ktarian baby at birth. The AK-1 program indeed makes the Doctor a genius when it comes to medicine, but his bedside manner leaves something to be desired — although he has already come far since he was first the joke and then the bane of the U.S.S. Voyager crew. In fact, it's harder to tell what's evolved more: the Doctor's own self-respect, or the respect he's given by his colleagues — with thanks on both counts largely due to his surprise assistant, Kes — though he still rubs Torres the wrong way and usually can't stand Neelix. Prodded by her and the simple needs of their predicament, Janeway has seen to it that not only is the Doctor accorded more briefings and updates, but he can now turn himself off — a small matter until seen in the light of independence.
He was then able to brief Starfleet on Voyagers situation before returning to the Voyager with the message that they were no longer alone. (VOY: "Message in a Bottle")

It wouldn't mean anything to you anyway." The word at the start may be Raxacoricofallapatorius, a planet featured in Doctor Who. Further mentions may include some quotes from Solembum when Eragon is plying the Werecat with questions regarding the advice he had given Eragon in the first book, about the Rock of Kuthian. Solembum said several things that may be about the popular show, including. His speech was as follows: This could be deduced that the room is the Tardis and the men who age backwards are/is the Doctor (perhaps this indicates the Doctor, if he has been there, has been to Alagesia on several occasions) though in this case one could also read it as a reference to one of many other figures, a more famous case being that of "Benjamin Button", or the Arthurian sorcerer, Merlin. The Shadows that creep may also be the Vashta Nerada, as seen in the episodes of Doctor Who: Silence in the Library and Forests of the Dead. The stones that speak could also be a reference to the Weeping Angels, or Lonely Assassins. His mentioning lends support to the theory that Alagaësia is a parallel version of earth.
His favorite planet is Earth, a world he has visited countless times and even lived on for years on multiple occasions, both willingly and while in exile. Due to a malfunction in the chameleon circuit that has never been properly fixed, his TARDIS assumes the shape of a 1950s-style British police box. Like all Time Lords, the Doctor has the ability to regenerate his body to avoid death, assuming a new appearance and even modifying some aspects of his personality, although his memories and basic identity remain the same. His alien nature also gives him a form of time sensitivity, allowing him deep and instinctive understanding of time, the ability to discern moments which are "fixed" from those which can be altered without harming the space-time continuum, as well as the ability to sense when there is something wrong with the timeline. In his First incarnation, the Doctor expressed a very strong aversion to altering history in any way during his travels. This conviction has faded more and more as his hatred of injustice overcame his wish to avoid interfering with other civilizations. During all of his travels, the Doctor opposes violence, forceful conquest, slavery and genocide; always siding with the explored victims to overcome their tyrannical invaders and/or masters. The Doctor's personality is a complex one, and as stated above, tends to fluctuate between his multiple incarnations. He is known to be friendly and humorous, although often a little vain and even arrogant; and may alternate from childishly cheerful to deadly serious depending on the situation. He will seldom lose patience, though, and often manages to remain in control of the situation by manipulating others subtly or pretending to be much less intelligent and resourceful than he actually is. He rarely shows respect for authority but has a deep sense of respect towards all life and never tolerates injustice or prejudice. He tends to dress in an extravagant manner, carries a load of useful and useless items in his pockets (which like his TARDIS are known to be bigger on the inside), remarks casually about the most fantastic subjects and rarely feels the need to explain himself. He is, however, on most occasions, very kind and gentle towards his companions and even complete strangers. He is very compassionate, and will defend even villains from harm, although there have been exceptions. When he absolutely needs to, he is not by any means incapable of killing. Having lived for hundreds of years and visited hundreds of worlds and epochs, the Doctor remains an intensely curious and highly moral adventurer who will rather solve problems with his wits than by using violence, even though many of the beings he encounters tend to be hostile, especially towards him. The Doctor has a special affection for the Human race and our history and is nearly always accompanied by a Human companion, often female, although neither being exclusive. He is a pacifist by principle and therefore never carries a weapon and has the uncanny ability to keep his enemies distracted just long enough to have worked out a clever way to defeat them. Still, as stated above, he has executed criminals on certain occasions, especially in his Sixth incarnation and his post-Time War incarnations.
