  • French physicist Marie Curie (1867-1934) was one of many historical figures on the original 1893 expedition to Mars. When the Avatar and company met her in Martian Dreams, Curie was living and working in the human settlement of Olympus. She quickly proved to be a storehouse of useful information about the radioactive element Radium, and had learned much about the habits of the rockworms that dwelt near it. From her room, the Avatar was able to obtain a lead box and a set of tongs, with which to safely handle and store any radium they acquired in the future.

  • This Polish-born French physicist discovered the radioactive properties of radium and polonium. In 1903 she was rewarded with the Nobel Prize for physics, followed by one for chemistry in 1911. She died of leukemia, no doubt caused by her pioneering research into the nature of radioactivity. Some of the Martian artifacts discovered by Lowell and others were powered by radioactive substances, making her expertise invaluable.

  • Maria Skłodowska-Curie was the Human co-discoverer of radiation, on Earth, in the late-19th century. A holographic simulation of Curie was among the historical personality profiles studied by The Doctor, in 2373, during his attempt to expand his personality subroutines. (VOY: "Darkling") The 24th century Federation Type 15 shuttlepod Curie and the Type 6 shuttlecraft, Curie, both assigned to the USS Enterprise-D, were named in her honor. (TNG: "Evolution" , "Parallels" , "Lower Decks" ) According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 172) , the birth and death years of physicist Marie Curie were 1867 and 1934, respectively. The other co-discoverer of radiation was her husband Pierre Curie. (The Star Trek Encyclopedia stated that together they discovered radium and polonium, which were sources of radiation.) She earned two Nobel Prizes for her study of radioactivity.

She was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity, the only person honored with Nobel Prizes in two different sciences, and the first female professor at the University of Paris. She was born Maria Skłodowska in Warsaw, Vistula Country, Russian Empire, and lived there until she was 24. In 1891 she followed her elder sister Bronisława to study in Paris, where she obtained her higher degrees and conducted her subsequent scientific work. She founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and Warsaw. Her husband Pierre Curie was also a Nobel laureate, as were her daughter Irène Joliot-Curie and son-in-law Frédéric Joliot-Curie. Her achievements include the creation of a theory of radioactivity (a term coined by her), techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes, and the discovery of two new elements, polonium and radium. It was also under her personal direction that the world's first studies were conducted into the treatment of neoplasms ("cancers"), using radioactive isotopes. While an actively loyal French citizen, she never lost her sense of Polish identity. She named the first new chemical element that she discovered (1898) "polonium" for her native country, and in 1932 she founded a Radium Institute (now the Maria Skłodowska–Curie Institute of Oncology) in her home town Warsaw, headed by her physician-sister Bronisława.
