| bestiarytext | - The Tarantula is another nasty variant of the spider family. It is not bound to a certain habitat, so it can be encountered in caves, forests and ruins alike. Therefore it poses a threat everywhere but in the coldest or volcanic areas. It is aggressive and dangerous and it is not choosier in its diet than in its habitat. Anything is seen as prey and sometimes they even cannibalise creatures of their own species. Its poisonous fangs are more than enough to make these beasts a constant threat to the settlers but many extermination campaigns have driven them back from the centres of civilisation. Still the sight of a single Tarantula is usually enough for a town to hire some scouts and mercenaries to examine the area more closely.

- Tarantula was a film released in 1955. It was played at the Pohatchee Drive-In. Unknown at the time, it featured one of the first appearances of Clint Eastwood. Ironically, Marty McFly would use his name as his alias in 1885.

Alas, when trying it on rats, rabbits and a tarantula, all it does is cause them to grow to enormous proportions, and when humans take it, it causes them to develop acromegaly, go mad, and die. Deemer's two lab assisstants take the serum when he is gone one day, causing one to die, and the other to go mad and attack Deemer, injecting him with the serum himself. During their fight, the cage of the tarantula, which is already about the size of a bear, is shattered, and it escapes into the desert. Shortly afterwards, local doctor Matt Hastings (John Agar) brings in Deemer's new assisstant Stephanie "Steve" Clayton (B-Movie scream queen Mara Corday). As Deemer's condition deterioriates due to the serum, Hastings romances Clayton. But then the livestock of local farmers start turning up dead. The escaped tarantula, sure enough, has grown to even bigger proportions; now those of a large building. It is now up to Deemer, Hastings, Clayton and the local sheriff to stop it. The film is honestly one of the better 1950s B giant monster movies. While it could potentially have been a Narm-fest characterized by a cheap stop-motion puppet, like The Giant Claw, instead the special effects, though dated today, were actually pretty fair for their day. Among other things, the film is notable for the appearance of a 25-year-old Clint Eastwood in an uncredited role as a fighter pilot at the end of the film.

- In 1936, Indiana Jones and Satipo entered the Temple of the Chachapoyan Warriors in Peru. In one of the entry chambers, a large swarm of tarantulas began to crawl on the two men, and Satipo got Jones' attention about the spiders. Using his bullwhip, Jones brushed off a few that were crawling on his own back, then brushed off the multitude that that were crawling over his guide. Later that year, Jones sought to enter the Hopi cave in Arizona, which was now being used as a criminal hideout by Busby Giles. Seeing two thugs guarding the mountaintop smoke hole, Jones gathered a bag full of tarantulas and threw it at the two men. Pulling on a rope, Jones opened the bag, and the hairy spiders fell out, and landed on the guards. Distracted by the tarantulas, Mel and his partner were no match for Jones, who knocked them out, and crawled down the smoke hole. In 1957, while exploring Chauchilla Cemetery in Peru, Indiana Jones and Mutt Williams encountered some spider silk which Jones surmised was spun by the Peruvian giant knee-stripe, a type of giant tarantula. Later, as Jones pulled on a skull, a tarantula ran across his hand, not affecting Jones, but frightening Williams.

Fresco and Martin Berkeley was based on a story by Arnold inspired by Fresco's teleplay for Science Fiction Theatre, "No Food for Thought", which was aired on May 14, 1955. Bent on revenge, Tarantula attacked and destroyed a border post, killing three Israeli soldiers (an act later blamed on Hamas rebels). While on the mission, Kamal Biari was killed in an Israeli raid. Disillusioned with Hamas and filled with hatred of the West (who had aided Israel in the first place), Tarantula returned to the United States, where she founded the Ta'reen Syndicate. She soon recruited other mutants - Bodycount, Myst, Fatal, Bat and Jinx - and began working for hire as an assassin and terrorist.

- The Tarantulas weapons are the laser cannons on the tips of their front legs. These lasers cause 20 points of damage per hit. Tarantulas don't need to charge their lasers beforehand, though they can charge their lasers for more powerful shots that cause fifty points of damage per hit. Trivia: The species of tarantula used in the film was for years presumed to be the Chilean Rose Tarantula (also known as Grammostola Rosea) as said species is a very commonly used spider in movies due to its more docile nature and large availability. However, the actual species used is now reportedly to be the Costa Rican Zebra Tarantula (Aphonopelma Seemani), given its orange web spinnerets and striped legs seen clearly on its legs throughout the film, a known feature of this species.
- When Rimmer's Better Than Life fantasy began to fall apart because of his multiple neuroses, he imagined a tarantula crawling up his trousers. This immediately came into existence, terrifying Rimmer as it was the thing of which he was most afraid. Lister told him to wish it away, but they all ended up buried alive on the beach instead (RD: Better Than Life). Lister also shared this fear. When Kryten's hand arrived on Red Dwarf to get help from Lister, Holly warned Lister that something very like a tarantula was loose aboard the ship. He was very nervous, since the thought of a tarantula crawling over his sleeping body was a particular phobia. When the hand crawled up his leg, he used a keyboard to write out a warning to The Cat. He typed that a "Taranshula" was in his boxer shorts and was trying to make a nest. When The Cat saw it, he also began to type instead of talk, writing that the spider had an eye the size of a meatball. Lister wanted to kill it and was very relieved to discover it was Kryten's hand (RD: Terrorform). When Lister was later taken hostage by the Lows, they took control of his body and tortured him for fun. One of those tortures was to eat a tarantula which they had in a small tank. Lister was made to kneel down and open the tank, pick up the spider, hold open his mouth with one hand and shove the tarantula in with the other. After swallowing the spider, he declared the Lows to be "two lettuces short of an allotment" (RD: Demons & Angels).
