Seeing Nadd's other apprentices—Satal and Aleema Keto, Tetan nobles who had founded the Krath cult and conquered their native star system—as a threat, Kun set out to destroy them. On Empress Teta, Kun encountered Ulic Qel-Droma, a Jedi Knight who had lost his Master to a Krath attack and had gone undercover within the group to seek revenge. Qel-Droma had been seduced by the dark side himself, and while the two briefly dueled, their battle was ended when the spirit of long-dead Dark Lord of the Sith Marka Ragnos appeared to proclaim the two fit to call themselves Sith Lords. Exar Kun was to be the Dark Lord of the Sith, and Qel-Droma his apprentice, and together they resolved to bring a Sith golden age back to the galaxy. Allied with the remnants of the Krath and the Mandalorian warrior clans, Kun and Qel-Droma commenced a bloody war against the Republic starting in 3996 BBY. In the early stages of the conflict, Kun traveled to the Jedi library world of Ossus, murdered the Jedi Keeper of Antiquities, Odan-Urr, and took possession of a rare Sith holocron. Kun then took several prospective Jedi followers back to Yavin 4, where he used the holocron's power to corrupt them and reshape them into his Brotherhood of the Sith. Kun sent his Brotherhood out into the galaxy to kill their Masters and wreak havoc, while he headed to the Republic capital of Coruscant to rescue Qel-Droma, who had been captured after launching an ill-advised attack on the planet. Ever the showman, Kun burst into the Senate Hall in the middle of Qel-Droma's trial for war crimes, murdering Supreme Chancellor Sidrona and setting Qel-Droma free. On his way out, he was confronted by his former Master, Vodo-Siosk Baas—unable to talk the Krevaaki into joining his side, Kun instead unveiled his new invention, the double-bladed lightsaber, and killed Baas in a duel. Distrustful of Aleema Keto, who had been responsible for Qel-Droma's capture, Kun sent her to her death soon afterward, manipulating her into causing a massive supernova in the Cron Cluster that was sure to destroy the planet Ossus. Ahead of the Jedi Order's chaotic evacuation of the doomed planet, Kun and Qel-Droma descended onto Ossus and ransacked the Great Jedi Library for its ancient treasures. While Kun made it in and out with a sizable haul, Qel-Droma got caught in combat, killed his brother, was taken prisoner and stripped of his connection to the Force. Shattered by his brother's death, Qel-Droma switched sides and led the Jedi to Kun's base on Yavin 4. In the ensuing battle, Kun refused to go quietly, conducting an ancient ritual to free his spirit from his mortal form so he could wreak havoc through the cosmos. He did not entirely succeed: while the ritual worked as intended and the Jedi thought him dead, Kun's spirit was trapped on Yavin 4 for the next several millennia. In 11 ABY, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker established a Jedi training ground on Yavin 4, as he attempted to build a New Jedi Order after the old Order's destruction at the hands of the Galactic Empire. After thousands of years in isolation, Kun attempted to influence Skywalker's apprentices to do his bidding, successfully turning the young Padawan Kyp Durron to the dark side and severely wounding Skywalker. However, the rest of Skywalker's apprentices banded together and, with the help of the long-dead shade of Vodo-Siosk Baas, banished Kun's spirit and finally put an end to his schemes.

Exar, in de overtuiging dat de geest van een oude Sith Lord hem niets kon aandoen, liet zich door Freedon naar de planeet Korriban, de eeuwenoude woonplaats van de Sith, leiden. Daar vond hij de Valley of the Dark Lords, een vallei waarin de grootste Sith Lords ooit zijn begraven. Gretig naar kennis dook Exar in het eerste het beste graf dat hij vond, en begon alle kennis die erin verscholen lag in zich op te nemen. De geesten van Freedon Nadd en de andere oude Sith Lords besloten Exar Kun te testen. Ze lokten hem een grot in, die ze door middel van de Force lieten instorten. Toen sloten ze Exar van de Force af, waardoor hij zichzelf niet kon bevrijden. Exar smeekte voor zijn leven, zodat de Sith Lords hem de keus gaven: de Dark Side in zichzelf erkennen en zo ontsnappen, of sterven. Ambitieus als Exar was, liet hij zijn woede en angst de vrijde loop en ontsnapte zo uit de grot. Zijn hoofd en hart gevuld met nieuwe ideeën en denkbeelden, vertrok Exar van Korriban als een schaduw van zijn oude zelf.
- [Source] Celui qui fut un grand Seigneur Noir des Sith, n'était, au départ, qu'un Padawan parmi tant d'autres, certes très talentueux, mais que l'arrogance grandissante, et le trop fort appétit de puissance consuma et finit par mener au Côté Obscur. Après quelques mois passés sous la tutelle du maître Jedi Vodo-Siosk Baas, durant lesquels la rage intérieure et la suffisance qui l'habitaient ressortaient pendant les entraînements avec d'autres padawans comme Crado ou Sylvar, Exar Kun ouvrit un Holocron Sith. Son maître ressentit un grand malaise à l'annonce de cette nouvelle, car il sentait bien que la tentation du Côté Obscur sur un esprit aussi imprévisible était grande. En effet, Exar Kun, devinant grâce à lui une manière plus rapide d'appréhender la Force et d'augmenter son pouvoir, fut dès lors convaincu qu'il devait apprendre le Côté Obscur. Malgré les avertissements répétés de son maître, qui tenta de le sauver de cette influence, son arrogance lui fit croire qu'il pourrait revenir de cette quête inchangé, et faire ensuite profiter l'académie Jedi de ses nouvelles connaissances, sans succomber pour autant. Exar Kun ne réalisait pas combien était profonde l'abîme où il s'engageait. Il quitta donc son maître et voyagea jusqu'à Onderon. Là, il apprit l'existence d'un sarcophage enfermant dans une tombe les restes du puissant Sith Freedon Nadd, exilé sur Dxun, et s'y rendit. L'esprit du Sith mort, décelant en ce jeune rebelle l'ambition qui le dévorait, apparut devant lui et lui enseigna la voix Obscure. Puis, il décida Exar Kun à se rendre sur Korriban, planète toute entière consacrée au culte, à la mémoire Sith et à leur science, à la recherche d'un cristal contenant l'esprit d'anciens Jedi Déchus. Exar Kun ne sentit pas le piège, et arrivé dans la grotte où se trouvait ce cristal, il vit celui-ci exploser, sous l'action de Freedon Nadd qui voulait le tester, et libérer les esprits enfermés, qui se déchaînèrent sur lui. Les tonnes de roches de la grotte s'effondrant ensevelirent le jeune homme, qui, blessé et trop faible pour savoir user correctement de la Force et s'en sortir, s'abandonna à la seule issue que lui présentaient les esprits : accepter de se soumettre entièrement au Côté Obscur. La rage et la peur le guidant, il puisa dans celui-ci pour s'échapper et se guérir. Lorsqu'il ressortit du piège tendu délibérément par les esprits morts, sa conversion était faite, Exar venait de sombrer définitivement. Cependant, s'il avait accepté de puiser dans le Côté Obscur, l'envie de le dominer encore sans s'y abandonner complètement lui restait. Il quitta donc Korriban pour se rendre sur Yavin IV, là où, 1 000 ans auparavant, le Sith Naga Sadow s'était exilé. Il fut très vite capturé par les descendants d'une ancienne expérience du Sith, les Massassi. Ce qui lui restait de jugement libre, Exar Kun le perdit là-bas, où, sur le point d'être dévoré par une Wyrm Sith géante, lâchée par les Massassi sur lui, il puisa de nouveau sur les conseils de Freedon dans le Côté Obscur tapi en lui, et en embrassa complètement les convictions. Tuant la créature à l'aide d'une amulette Sith trouvée dans les trésors de Naga, Exar Kun en profita pour se débarrasser aussi de l'esprit de Freedon Nadd, contre lequel il gardait rancune pour le piège de la grotte. Sa nouvelle force lui permit également de faire des Massassi ses esclaves, qu'il employa pour la construction de nombreux et massifs temples utilisés pour les cérémonies Sith. Progressant rapidement dans l'apprentissage d'anciennes techniques Sith, de Magie et d'Alchimie, Exar Kun fit des Massassis sa garde personnelle, et manipula de nombreuses autres créatures grâce au Coté Obscur, avant de décider d'imposer son pouvoir au delà de Yavin et ses lunes en cherchant les opposants potentiels à sa puissance. Son plus gros challenge fut réalisé en la personne d'Ulic Qel-Droma, contre lequel Exar Kun s'opposa en un duel gigantesque. Comme ils combattaient, les amulettes que chacun des deux combattants portaient réagirent tout d'un coup, de l'énergie qui en jaillit se matérialisa un groupe d'anciens Sith. Marka Ragnos, le plus puissant d'entre eux, prit alors la parole pour déclarer les deux combattants nouveaux leaders des Sith, et comme Ulic était moins puissant, Exar Kun devint officiellement le nouveau seigneur Sith, et Ulic son Apprenti Sith, pour ensemble restaurer l'empire Sith. La Grande Guerre de la Sith commençait. Exar se rendit à l'Académie Jedi d'Ossus, tua Odan Urr, puis avec l'aide d'un Holocron Sith, ramena de Yavin IV une vingtaine d'élèves parmi les plus brillants, qu'il convertit au Côté Obscur avant de les envoyer tuer leurs anciens maîtres et semer la terreur dans la galaxie. Il dut aussi se rendre sur Coruscant, pour libérer Ulic Qel-Droma, qui avait tenté de son coté de conquérir le pouvoir seul. Ce fut là-bas que le chemin d'Exar croisa celui de Vodo-Siosk Baas, son ancien maître, qu'il n'eut aucun mal à tuer lors d'un duel grâce au pouvoir obscur, et à son Sabrelaser à double lame, le premier connu. Il put ensuite tuer le président du sénat devant lequel Ulic avait été traduit. Puis il repartit pour Yavin 4. Désirant faire d'une pierre deux coups, à savoir attaquer de nouveau l'Académie d'Ossus et se débarrasser de certains de ses adeptes trop gênants, il envoya Aleema Keto et Crado utiliser un artefact Sith dont la puissance bien trop grande déclencha une supernova dans l'amas de Cron, détruisant plusieurs mondes et les millions d'êtres vivants s'y trouvant, y compris les deux adeptes. Ossus aussi était menacée par la supernova créée, et l'Académie commença l'évacuation, ce que désirait Exar Kun, qui profita de la panique pour attaquer par surprise et tenter de s'emparer de nombreux artefacts Jedi et de leur puissance. Il y parvint d'ailleurs et retourna sur Yavin avec ces objets. Mais Ulic rencontra dans la fuite d'Ossus son frère, qu'il tua, au cours d'une bataille sanglante, enfermé dans sa rage. Cet acte horrible brisa cependant l'emprise qu'avait sur lui le Côté Obscur, et, ouvrant les yeux, Ulic, dans l'horreur de ce dernier meurtre, fut capturé par Nomi Sunrider, privé de ses pouvoirs et de la Force, et dans un acte de rédemption tardif, révéla aux Jedi l'emplacement de la base secrète d'Exar Kun. Les Jedi se réunirent alors pour que leurs forces conjuguées arrivent à anéantir le seigneur Sith. Sentant sa fin proche, Exar risqua le tout pour le tout, et, sacrifiant ses guerriers Massassis en leur prenant leur énergie vitale, il transféra son esprit dans une tombe de granite, dans les temples qu'ils avaient construits. Passant ainsi pour mort aux yeux de l'univers entier, il attendit patiemment de pouvoir prendre sa revanche. Cette occasion arriva 4 000 ans plus tard, sous la Nouvelle République. Yavin IV, après avoir servi de base pour l'Alliance Rebelle, fut le site que choisit Luke Skylwalker pour ériger la Nouvelle Académie Jedi et reconstruire l'Ordre. Ce fut la présence de certains Padawans très réceptifs à la Force qui réveilla son esprit endormi depuis si longtemps. Il apparut au Padawan Gantoris, qui, inexpérimenté et peu puissant, fut tué aussitôt, rendant ainsi après des siècles d'abstinence l'appétit et l'ambition à l'esprit d'Exar Kun. Il put corrompre plus facilement le talentueux Kyp Durron. Il s'attaqua même à Luke Skylwalker, qu'il faillit tuer, séparant pour un moment son esprit de son corps. Mais les Jedi firent cercle autours de lui, et ensemble, avec l'aide de l'esprit de Luke et de celui de l'ancien maître d'Exar Kun, ils vainquirent l'esprit du seigneur Sith. Exar Kun mourut cette fois pour de bon, son temple fut détruit par Corran Horn.

Juntos formaron la Hermandad de los Sith, y empezaron una salvaje cruzada para construir una nueva Edad de Oro de los Sith. Tras matar al maestro Odan-Urr en Ossus y robar su holocrón Sith, Kun consiguió atraer a su causa a muchos estudiantes Jedi a los que prometió conocimientos que sus maestros no podrían transmitirles. Tras corromperlos con el lado oscuro, Kun ordenó el asesinato de sus maestros para consolidar así su dominio sobre la Galaxia desestabilizando los cimientos de la Orden Jedi. El mismo Exar Kun combatió y mató a su maestro, Vodo-Siosk Baas, durante su duelo en el Senado Galáctico. Más tarde, Exar lideró el ataque hacia Ossus para robar todos las reliquias Jedi que pudiera. Allí perdió a su aprendiz y compañero Ulic que, atormentado por haber asesinado a su hermano, traicionó a Kun y reveló a los Jedi la ubicación de su base en Yavin IV. Muchos Maestros Jedi se unieron para derrotar a Exar Kun en Yavin IV. Pero su espíritu se alojó en una de las pirámides Massassi, y permaneció aletargado hasta la fundación del Praxeum Jedi del Maestro Luke Skywalker. Entonces despertó y poco a poco, intentó pervertir las mentes de los estudiantes atrayéndolos hacia el lado oscuro. Finalmente fue totalmente derrotado por los estudiantes Jedi de Luke mediante la unión de sus fuerzas y la ayuda de su anterior maestro, Vodo-Siosk Baas.

Possedette due studenti, Gantoris e Kyp Durron, convertendoli al lato oscuro ed uccidendo alla fine Gantoris. Ebbe anche successo nel prendere l'anima di Luke dal suo corpo, ma alla fine fu sconfitto dal potere combinato degli studenti di Luke.
