Dan: Rain, rain on my face Todd (VO): I mean, if you've ever been station-surfing on a road trip and got tricked into listening to the Christian stations, then yes, you know how quick you notice the edgeless crappiness that distinguishes Christian music from the mainstream. Todd (VO): ...it's time to figure out why a band with that much crossover appeal eventually retreated back into the comforting world of the church. Todd: When we talk about how Jars of Clay followed this up, we need to clarify what we're talking about because Jars of Clay had two separate careers. Behind the scenes footage of band Todd (VO): Obviously, most of their hits were not suitable for the rock stations, so their label never tried to push them there, but there were a couple of songs that did manage a tiny bit of airplay. Here's one of those few, it is called "Crazy Times." Video for "Crazy Times" Dan: You're cold that way And that's why you say Todd (VO): Oh, yeah, I remember this one. I read that Jars of Clay didn't want to be a band that sang strictly about their faith, but about their lives so as not to put people off. I don't think that's always been true of them, obviously, but I can see where they're going; you really have to dig to find any spiritual message here. Todd: Apparently, Christian bands could get away with that in the '90s. Todd (VO): I don't know, it's no "Flood" though. That's probably why it only barely crept onto the modern rock stations. It just didn't resonate with people the way that the profound, gripping lyrics of Gavin Rossdale did. Todd: Because what kind of a message does that send, hanging out with those purveyors of sin? They have a lot of albums, some of them are rock, some of them are more traditional hymn stuff. Most of them didn't strike me as all that interesting-looking, but... Todd: ...one of them did catch my eye. [Cover of...] Their eighth album from 2006, Good Monsters, which they call their first "rock" album. Clip of "Work" Todd: Yeah, feel that, it's almost a little Foo Fighters-y even. Dan: Do you know what I mean When I say I don't wanna be alone? Todd: Boy, this is an inappropriate gesture. Clip of "Good Monsters" Dan: All the good monsters open their eyes Todd (VO): And then there's this, the title track, and this one appears to be about the good people who don't speak up when they see bad shit going down. And apparently, they mean what they say about the need to stand up for people because, a couple years ago, the frontman went on this long tweet rant about how [screenshots of tweet from Dan...] opposing gay marriage makes no sense, [...GLAAD article: "Christian band 'Jars of Clay' frontman comes out as ally in 3 days of tweeting"...] everyone should be allowed to marry, same love, and all that. Todd: It was 2014, I know, the stance was basically controversial nowhere [...and Christian Today article: "Jars of Clay frontman faces backlash for comments on homosexuality: 'Conservative argument doesn't hold up to scrutiny'] except with Jars of Clay fans. Todd (VO): Yeah, when your fanbase is made up of Evangelicals, that's kind of a big deal. They got [shot of Political Outcast article: "The Jars of Clay Apostasy: Lead Singer Tweets Betrayal of Jesus"] some pretty furious attacks on that one, so that was kind of a gutsy move. Todd: Makes me...makes me wonder if I was a little too hard on Christian music. [Leans forward and prays] Hey, God. Um...I've been respectful enough...this review, right? I'm not...going to Hell or anything, am I? God: [against heavenly choir] My child, I forgive you. I...I don't really listen to Jars of Clay anymore. anyway. I'm more up on Christian hip hop now. You checked out Lecrae? Todd: Um...no, but, um...I'll be sure to check him out. God: I know when you're lying, Todd! Todd: Sorry, sorry, it's...it's not my genre, okay? Todd: Did they deserve better? Well, all will receive their just rewards when the Lord calls them home. But they seem like they've done well enough. Jars of Clay: But if I can't swim after 40 days Todd (VO): The fact that they crossed over at all is shocking on its own for a Christian band. I don't think they were trying at all to be mainstream; that was just a bonus. It was a good time for Christian rock, unlike nowadays when the market appears to have dried up for everyone except the blandest, least creative bands in the world. The afflicted are more commonly known as the Flood. However, everyone agrees that walking peices of shit Floods and semi-solid brown water is an extremely potent weapon of mass destruction; even if it does look like Tartar sauce's special Meaty Monday Surprise (seriously, how can he swallow that stuff, it looks like shit!).
- With none of the quartet noticing a medieval execution in their back garden, there is initial tranquility in the house, with Neil randomly hitting himself in the face with a frying pan, and Vyvyan reading one of Rick's "SS Death Camp Batallion go to Monte Cassino for the Massacre" war comics, leading to an argument with Rick over the comic's content. After Neil prepares to go on a shopping trip for "Everything except Green Globules and Super Mousse, Vyvyan mentions that he had concocted a 'homicidal axe-wielding maniac' potion disguised in a Coca-Cola can, that transforms the drinker into said person, under the guise of a cure "For not being a homicidal axe-wielding maniac", to which Vyvyan mentions the potential size of the market for such an invention. However, the monsoon-like rain outside soon traps everyone in the house and a game of hide and seek gets underway to pass the time. During this time, the house takes on a Narnia-esque feel, with a lion tamer in Mike's bedroom and Vyvyan finding a witch in a sleigh lurking in a new world at the back of the wardrobe, where he was hiding. But all that - plus the sharks at the window and the arson attack on Rick's bedroom - becomes irrelevant as Mr. Balowski arrives, unwittingly drinks Vyvyan's potion, and goes on the hunt. As Mike, Rick and Vyvyan prepare to kill Neil for food with an electric hedge trimmer, Mr. Balowski breaks down the door to Neil's room with an axe, screaming "Heeere's JERTZE!" leading to the group trying to escape him. After tricking Mr. Balowski into entering Mike's room, which was being rented out to Bobby the Lion Tamer and his man-eating lions, the group notice that the flood waters are subsiding.
- Bolta led the Clan cats with Hollypaw and Lightstar at her side. Jay was lagging behind, her gaze flickering to the black tom. Trying to ignore her, Bolta plunged further into the forest. They weren’t far from the stone hollow now. Her paws slipped and stumbled on the leaf-strewn ground and she stumbled over fallen logs. They turned a sharp corner before finally coming to a halt at the thorn-tunnel. Lightstar took the lead, Bolta second and Hollypaw third. Bolta flinched as the thorns dragged through her fur but it was soon over. She was in the stone hollow with the sandy ground and the towering cliff walls. “All cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here for a Clan meeting!” Lightstar yowled, clambering up onto a high ledge. Her Clan gathered instantly, leaping from bushes, hollow logs and bramble thickets. They stared curiously at Bolta and the others but none of them moved a claw. They’re all terrified of Lightstar, Bolta realised. They all saw what happened to Lionstar... “We’ll be going to the Moonpool,” Lightstar announced. “There is no time to ask questions. Just do as your group leader tells you.” The DeathClan exchanged confused glances. “Your group leaders will be Jay, Bolta, Hollypaw and me. Hollypaw, Jay and Bolta, would you line up here for me.” Bolta stepped forwards and sat down a little apart from Jay and Hollypaw. Lightstar began to call out names and soon Bolta had a mixed group of well-muscled warriors behind her. She stifled a purr of amusement as she saw that Jay had the tom, Blackpaw in her group. “Jay,” Lightstar yowled. “You take your group to the Moonpool now. The rest of us will follow.” Bolta watched Jay lead her group back out of the hollow. She then sat and stared at her own group. She recognized a few cats like, Foxwhisker, Robinsong, Silentspirit and Inkpaw. The rest were strangers to her. A wet summer’s breeze stayed heavy in the air. Why has it so wet? But as soon as she asked her question was answered. Gasping, Bolta backed away. A huge wave of water had begun to gush down one of the cliff walls. Most of the other cats had noticed and had begun to make their way to the thorn-tunnel. The wave loomed up above Bolta’s head for a stretched out second before came crashing down onto her. Water soaked through her fur in an instant, weighing her down beneath the water. It choked her, filling her ears and making her eyes sting. Bolta struggled, kicking her legs ferociously. At last her head broke the surface and she managed to get a few gulps of breath before being pulled under again. It happened again and again but finally Bolta managed to swim with her head above the water. Around her she could see other cats struggling to keep their heads above the surface. But one cat in particular caught her eye. It was a ginger kit that was being pulled by the current and was coughing and choking feebly. Bolta kicked her way over to it and grasped the scruff of its neck in her jaws. I have to get this cat to safety! That’s all Bolta thought of as she swam determinedly towards the place where the thorn-tunnel was. Water was already gushing through the hole. Bolta ducked back under the water and quickly through the thorn-tunnel. She tumbled onto the shallow stream that was running down the forest on the other side. The ginger kit coughed and spluttered, its tiny sides heaving. Bolta laid it on its back on the dry ground. She began to rub its belly. “Starkit!” Bolta’s head snapped up. A pale she-cat was stumbling over to a tree-stump. “Starkit!” the she-cat shrieked again. Bolta looked down at the small kit beside her. “Over here!” she yowled. The grey queen streaked in a bee-line to her. Her soft blue eyes became pools as she saw the tiny bundle of drenched ginger fur. “Oh, Starkit,” she whispered. “He’s still breathing,” Bolta murmured. But as she looked down at Starkit she saw that the breaths were slower. Its tiny blue eyes drooping as its body began to shut down. The queen dropped to the ground beside her son. She began to lap Starkit’s fur. “I’m here,” the queen murmured, her voice barely a whisper. “I’m here, Starkit.” “Mum!!” a tiny voice cried. “Where are you?” Bolta turned to see a small grey kit make his way over to Starkit. “Mummy what’s wrong with Starkit. Why is he sleeping?” Bolta felt her heart ache for the small family. The pale queen looked up at her other son with eyes like watery pools. She seemed unable to speak. “You’re brother is on his way to StarClan,” Bolta whispered. The grey tom let out a devastated cry and fell to the ground beside his brother. “Don’t go Starkit!” he wailed. “I’ll be so lonely without you!” Bolta began to creep away. She made her way over to Hollypaw who looked just as drenched as Starkit and was shivering furiously. “Are you okay?” Bolta demanded. Hollypaw couldn’t end up like Starkit. She couldn’t! Hollypaw gave a shaky nod. “I just didn’t expect it,” she whispered. Her holly-leaf green eyes were wide and scared and then suddenly unfocused. What was happening to her? Soon the cloudiness left her eyes and they seemed to stretch even wider. “Jay!” she cried. “Their losing!” Bolta jumped. She had forgotten all about JayClan! “Any cat who is able!” she yowled at the top of her voice. “Get up and reform your group! We have to go and now!” There was a huge scurry as cats struggled to find their group leaders but soon they were racing towards the Moonpool. Bolta stumbled and slipped as she led every cat forwards. She was running faster then she had ever run in her life. They bounded across edge of the hills and very soon they came to the Moonpool stream. It was still running red with blood. Bolta leaped over it. Not waiting for the others she launched herself up the winding rock path. Her claws scrabbled in her rush to get to Jay in time. The others were close behind but she didn’t ever glance back. But when she came to the top she was frozen to the spot. Cats ran in every direction. The sand was already splattered with blood and nasty wails and cries came from everywhere. Bolta gawped as she saw Flora. Her neck was scraped at either side so that it looked like she had gills. Her sides were red and tail covered in bite marks. But she struggled on, fighting like the whole of LionClan. It looked as if she were dancing as she weaved between battling cats and scraped or bit the occasional Dark Forest cat. On either side of her, her clanmates began to appear. They all stopped and stared.

- The Flood are a highly adaptive and intelligent parasitic race whose sole intent is the destruction and assimilation of all life in the universe. The Flood were first discovered by the Forerunners who, at first, mistook the Flood for a disease. They were gravely mistaken and soon a war broke out between the two factions. After many decades of constant battling, the Forerunner decided they were not able to destroy the Flood and so they built seven gigantic superweapons known as the Halo Installatons. Once activated, the Halos decimated all life in this and the surrounding galaxies suitable for infection by the flood thereby killing themselves in the process. The only remaining Flood afterward were those held up in containment and research fascilities on the Halo Installations themselves. In the year 2552, the Flood were accidently released from the containment fascilities on Installation 04 by the UNSC and the Covenant. They wreaked havoc on the Halo ring until it was destroyed Masterchief and Cortana of the UNSC. The Flood were also able to make their escape on the containment fascilities on the gas mines orbiting the planet Threshold as well as on Installation 05 and were eventually able to make their way to the Covenant capitol city called High Charity which they crashed into Installation 00. The UNSC and Covenant Seperatists were able to activate Installation 00 without activating the other Installatons along with it thereby temporaraly destroying the Flood threat.
