  • Howitzers are used for firing shells at high trajectories and low velocities. They are typically used in large numbers by a ground force to stave off opposing ground units at a moderate distance. Howitzers are not used against aerial targets given the lack of accuracy against high-speed aircraft. While howitzers can be easily destroyed by any type of weaponry, usually only taking one player-launched standard missile to destroy, allied ground forces under howitzer fire are typically pinned down and must await air support.
  • In the taxonomies of artillery pieces used by European (and European-style) armies in the eighteenth, 19th, and 20th centuries, the howitzer stood between the "gun" (characterized by a longer barrel, larger propelling charges, smaller shells, higher velocities, and flatter trajectories) and the "mortar" (which was meant to fire at even higher angles of ascent and descent). Howitzers, like other artillery pieces, are usually organized in groups called batteries.
  • Being a defensive unit, these should generally be built at your home base or surrounding. They have relatively low HP for a defensive structure, so should not be left unguarded. They are best placed in the center or spaced out around your base to ensure you can attack as many units as possible.
  • This howitzer can be used to shell the area, provided that your party can find Howitzer shells. Operating the weapon can raise your AT weapon and demolitions skills.
  • Howitzers were the modern U.S. military cannon given to the People's Freedom Army leader General Benjamin Juma from American businessman and Starkwood's chief executive officer Jonas Hodges for his men's bombardment on Sangala's capital city during Redemption. Howitzers were also lined up on Pennsylvania Avenue to salute the inauguration of President Allison Taylor.

  • Howitzers are indirect-fire ballistic cannon often mounted on Bolos as secondary weapons, starting with the Bolo Mark III in 2018 which carried four such guns.
  • The howitzer is a world object in Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas and appears as an unnamed artillery piece in Fallout 3. The model of the howitzer (NellisArtillery) is used in other artillery pieces.
  • The Howitzer Genjutsu is the signature technique of Banawi, once cast the enemy is subjected to illusionary impacts equivalent to a battery of Howitzers. The immense sound kills the opponent's hearing temporarily, a time period of about an hour. The illusion also causes paralysis and immense physical pain as well as the sensation of third degree burns making even the slightest contact after the illusion immensely painful. As noted by it's user it has a very similar effect to artillery in the battlefield and acts as a form of fire support in combat.
  • The Howitzer is the artillery unit of the Modern Age. It can built at the Factory, once a nation has developed File:Military Research Icon.png Military 6 (Nation-in-Arms), requiring both File:Metal.jpg Metal and File:Oil.jpg Oil to be produced. Like all artillery units, it takes up two population points. There are no nation-specific Howitzer units in this game. The Germans, however, use a special model for this unit called "Hummel" (see below).

  • Its voxel model was inspired by the mobile artillery from the previous game, but was likely modified into the German Tank destroyer, as the main difference, besides the colour, is the angle of the cannon. The tank was created using the Soviet scheme, however, and all its voiceover sets (save for the selection) were shared with the Allied Destroyer and the selection set is shared with the Grizzly battle tank. Its artillery role was taken by the Prism tank, while its South Korean exclusive unit role was transferred to the Black Eagle jet.
  • "Be slowly lifted up, thou long black arm,Great Gun towering towards Heaven, about to curse;..." While neither as powerful nor as accurate as most other artillery weapons, the Howitzer is however cheaper, and also has another special ability: it has the largest and highest level of splash damage, making it highly destructive and marking it as a general-piece artillery unit, although when fielded against Culverins or Bombards its defects will be easily seen. Still, if you need to bring up an anti-personnel, anti–fortification unit up front and cheaply, the Howitzer is your best bet, making it a worthy upgrade to the Trebuchet. Note, however, that Howitzers can only fire at a specific angle, and so have a great deal of minimum range, making them highly vulnerable if units marching towards th

  • Unlike its late introduction in the game, historically Howitzers were a fairly early development: "In the middle of the eighteenth century, a number of European armies began to introduce howitzers that were mobile enough to accompany armies in the field. Though usually fired at the relatively high angles of fire used by contemporary siege howitzers, these field howitzers were rarely defined by this capability. Rather, as the field guns of the day were usually restricted to inert projectiles (which relied entirely upon momentum to achieve their destructive effects), the field howitzers of the eighteenth century were chiefly valued for their ability to fire explosive shells. Thus, there were many cases where, for the sake of simplicity and rapidity of fire, dispensed with adjustable propella

Note, however, that Howitzers can only fire at a specific angle, and so have a great deal of minimum range, making them highly vulnerable if units marching towards them can survive the first salvos fired at them. Although most artillery tends to be referred to as "Howitzers" today, in pre-industrial conflicts the distinction between Howitzers and other firearms — especially large-calibre guns — was rather substantial. All modern Howitzers could trace their descent back to a single gun type introduced by the Hussites, a group of religious radicals in Central Europe, called the Houfnice or "heap gun". This weapon had a short but deep barrel, and was meant to fire at plunging angles over obstacles, which suited the defensive tactics employed by the Hussites. The Hussites soon fell amongst themselves and were eventually dispersed, but the new gun they introduced soon spread to Europe and later on to the rest of the world.
