Desirability
  • Thrown daggers are one of the less viable weapon classes, since the dagger of returning is very rare and very weak. That said, large stacks of orcish knives can be gathered easily, which can be used with efficiency. Still, the only players that will find themselves using thrown daggers a great deal will be Assassins, as this is their strongest form of offence in the early game by far. Throwing knives have an advantage of convenience only - contrary to dagger and orcish knives, they will be recognized as missiles by the game, meaning they will be offered as an automatic reload, preventing you from having to scour your inventory for a new stack of "melee weapon" thrown daggers every time they run out.

Weapon poison can be applied to every type of throwing knife, making them poisonous. In the smithing skill, every type of throwing knife can also be forged, and two are produced for each bar consumed. All throwing knives (including the rune throwing knife) have no ranged level requirements to wield. Because of this, some players who do not have the level 40 attack requirement to equip rune melee weapons will equip rune throwing knives to make it look like they have a rune 2-handed sword or similar rune sword. This trick is sometimes used by mage stakers so that they appear to have higher melee stats (and therefore a lower magic level for their combat level) to potential opponents.
