  • Dionysus was the son Zeus and the mortal Princess Semele of Thebes. This was no meeting of minds as Semele appears to have been a bit of cosseted young woman and a bit of an airhead. Since Zeus was always careful never to have sex with a clever woman (he made that mistake with Athena's mother). He appeared in disguise as an interior decorator to get close to Semele and was soon showing her more than wall paper patterns. Semele was sure he wasn't a mere artisan and asked of her employee's true origins. Zeus kept changing the subject but Semele insisted and said she would only carry on the relationship if her mystery lover appeared 'in his true glory'. Also, she realised she was carrying a child and would have to inform her parents King Cadmus and Queen Harmonia of Thebes.

He also increases many attributes for Pentekonters. This makes them last longer as being the only ships that attack in melee, they are vulnerable to arrow ships. Dionysus' God Power again helps units to live longer by increasing their armor. The Hydra and Scylla, his two myth units, gain attack as they kill enemies. A five-headed Hydra or Scylla is quite a terrifying enemy to encounter.

Also, she realised she was carrying a child and would have to inform her parents King Cadmus and Queen Harmonia of Thebes. Zeus tried to dissuade Semele but she was insistent. By the law of promises that even Greek Gods had to abide by, Zeus had to do as Semele requested. He turned up one evening in her bedroom, completely nude with a rose clenched between his teeth. It was a sight immortals had been familiar with but for poor Semele, Zeus appeared to her a burning man and set light to everything in the room. Semele cried 'save my baby' and disappeared in the flames. Zeus reached out and found a baby boy in the smoke. He knew it was his son - only another god could survive that inferno. Zeus had another son to look after.

In that episode, Hercules says of Dionysus, "that old lush isn't as bad as most of the gods." The divine mission of Dionysus was to mingle the music of the flute and to bring an end to care and worry. There is also an aspect of Dionysus on his relationship to the "cult of the souls", and the scholar Xavier Riu writes that Dionysus presided over communication between the living and the dead. Greeks borrowed Dionysus' figure and within the Olympian tradition he is made to be the son of Zeus and Semele; other versions of the story contend that he is the son of Zeus and Persephone.

In Greek mythology, Dionysus is made out to be a son of Zeus and the mortal Semele. He is described as being womanly or "man-womanish". The retinue of Dionysus was called the thiasus and was comprised chiefly of maenads and satyrs. Dionysus is a god of mystery religious rites. One of the most famous mystery religions was the Eleuinian Mysteries, in which Dionysus may have had a minor role. In the Thracian Mysteries, he wears the bassaris or fox-skin, symbolizing new life. His own rites, the Dionysian Mysteries practiced by maenads ad others, were the most secret of all. Many scholars believe that Dionysus is a syncretism of a local Greek nature deity and a more powerful god from Thrace or Phrygia such as Sabazios or Zalmoxis.

Later images show him as a beardless, sensuous, naked or half-naked youth: the literature describes him as womanly or "man-womanish". In its fully developed form, his central cult imagery shows his triumphant, disorderly arrival or return, as if from some place beyond the borders of the known and civilized. His procession (thiasus) is made up of wild female followers (maenads) and ithyphallic, bearded satyrs. Some are armed with the thyrsus, some dance or play music. The god himself is drawn in a chariot, usually by exotic beasts such as lions or tigers, and is sometimes attended by a bearded, drunken Silenus. This procession is presumed to be the cult model for the human followers of his Dionysian Mysteries. In his Thracian mysteries, he wears the bassaris or fox-skin, symbolizing a new life. He was also known as Bacchus (pronounced: ˈbækəs or ˈbɑːkəs; Greek: Βάκχος, Bakkhos), the name adopted by the Romans and the frenzy he induces, bakkheia. His thyrsus is sometimes wound with ivy and dripping with honey. It is a beneficent wand but also a weapon, and can be used to destroy those who oppose his cult and the freedoms he represents. He is also the Liberator (Eleutherios), whose wine, music and ecstatic dance frees his followers from self-conscious fear and care, and subverts the oppressive restraints of the powerful. Those who partake in his mysteries are possessed and empowered by the god himself. His cult is also a "cult of the souls"; his maenads feed the dead through blood-offerings, and he acts as a divine communicant between the living and the dead. In Greek mythology, he is presented as a son of Zeus and the mortal Semele, thus semi-divine or heroic: and as son of Zeus and Persephone or Demeter, thus both fully divine, part-chthonic and possibly identical with Iacchus of the Eleusinian Mysteries.
