Sometimes he eats a log, just like other NPCs can eat food. He has a random nametag. Due to the rapid explosions all the time, it is very difficult to reach Saruman and projectiles shot at him have a chance to be thrown back. When killed, Saruman will drop nothing but XP rarely his staff and bones. One use that he has however is to make crazy orc bomb or mob railguns!

  • Also known as Saruman the White or Saruman of Many Colours (Éo."Man of Cunning"), Saruman was considered arrogant and envious of Gandalf. He was head of the White Council of the Third Age and originally was known as Curumo, a chief of Aule's firespirits. Saruman was most like Sauron of the Istari. He eventually looked into the Palantir and lost the constest of wills against the Dark Lord Sauron. Sauron failed in taking Saruman's mind over completely and ended up making Saruman into an even more dark character. Saruman the White, the Chief of the Order of Wizards, had, for most of the Third Age, few dealings with Hobbits. He traveled extensively his first centuries in Middle-Earth, studying the enemies of the Free Peoples and researching their tools and methods, becoming known to the Elves as Curunir (S. "Man of Skill"). Saruman cooperated frequently with Gandalf the Grey in efforts to preserve the northern Dunadan kingdoms and overthrow the Witch-king. During all this time, he visited the Shire seldom and aided its people only incidentally. In T.A. 2759 Saruman took up residence in the Tower of Orthanc, lying in the Gap of Rohan at the juncture of Eriador and Gondor. He strove to form alliances and secret societies in Dunland, Saralainn, and the settlements along the Gwathlo and the Brandywine to counter the influence of the agents of the rulers of Goblin-gate, Mordor, and Moria. Since his methods were more devious and generally "dirtier" than those of Gandalf and the Elves, he kept most of his network of spies hidden from all eyes. Twisted in spirit by Sauron's influence and his own desire for power, Saruman finally renounced his guardianship over Orthanc in T.A. 2953, claiming the fortress and the surrounding valley as his own. He then began gathering an army of Orcs, wolves, wargs , and evil Men in the caverns under the southern Misty Mountains, transforming the once-placid Wizard's Vale (S. "Nan Curunir") into a fortified realm of mines and factories. His minions in Orthanc called him Sharku (Or."Old Man"); this name was passed on to his mannish agents in Eriador as "Sharkey". His servants and allies in Eriador now began to gather information and resources for Saruman's own ends; the wizard betrayed some of the most noble of them in the process. When Sauron also began to take an interest in Eriador, Saruman arranged to eliminate the Dark Lord's agents and thus keep him dependent on Saruman's sources. He was able to maintain his double betrayal until almost the last throw of the dice, even managing to imprison Gandalf in 3018. Saruman eventually betrayed the White Council and the Free Peoples of Middle Earth. He made Isengard a breeding pit of Orcs, Wargs, and evil Men. Saruman imprisoned Gandalf atop of Orthanc, who could only be rescued by Gwaihir. As the White Wizard grew accustomed to the epithet Sharkey, he began to take an active interest in the Shire. He realized in 2953 that Gandalf had asked the Rangers of the North to devote more of their limited manpower to guarding this peaceful realm. The Shire-folk seldom dealt with outsiders, but Sharkey was able to use the greed and ambitions of merchant-traders like Lotho Sackville-Baggins to his advantage. Not only did he develop sources and spies within the Shire, he was also able to purchase quantities of leather goods, cloth, and bulk foods in the Shire and ship them south for the use of his growing army. In spite of Sharkey's efforts, the most important bit of knowledge he might have secured—the location of the One Ring—eluded him until Frodo Baggins had already left for Rivendell. The White Wizard then committed his armies to an assault on Rohan, only to see all his might and machinery destroyed by the Rohirrim and the Ents. As he met Gandalf the White, he ended up being cast out of the White Council by the new white wizard's hand. Saruman remained in Orthanc until his voice could bewitch Treebeard to let him go. Weakened, suddenly and horribly aged, his staff broken by Gandalf, Saruman fled northward. After leaving Isengard, Saruman rouse a band of ruffians made up of Half-Orcs, Dunlendings, and renegade Breelanders to go scour the Shire. Lotho had already seized power in the Shire; the Wizard came to Bag End in fall of T.A.3019 determined to revenge himself on the Hobbits by destroying as much of the country as possible. His Staff having been broken by Gandalf and much of his power taken away, His magic items, for the most part, were drained and useless. One of his purposes in coming to the Shire was to locate new sources of power; he expected to find artifacts here left untouched since Arnorian times. Fortunately, the Ringbearers returned home only two months after the initiation of Sharkey's plan. That return brought about the Wizard's removal and death. He finally met his end at the hands of his servant Grima Wormtongue who in turn was shot by the Halflings of the Shire.

He also rapidly began work on a genetic engineering program, uniting the races of Orcs and goblin-men, forming the dreaded Uruk-Hai (although there are rumours he simply took football hooligans and spray-painted them grey). He soon waged a war against Middle-Earth, but once again ran afoul of the authorities and was banished (by means of painful death) to Legoland.

  • Saruman the White, aka Sharkey, Saruman of Many Colours and The White Wizard, ws an Istari wizard who came to Middle-earth during its darkest days. Saruman was the chief of the wizards and of the White Council—those who were opposed to the rule of the evil Sauron. He was also a clever and cunning strategist as well as a talented practioner of alchemy. The first that Middle-earth saw of this mighty wizard was as Saruman of Many Colours, a young, dashing and handsome Istari who was also a cunning warrior and strategist in secret. Saruman had a natural affinity for nature, frequenting the forests of the world (including Fangorn). He would often plant trees, shrubs and herbs along the forest beds, all the while striking up conversation with the animals and the natives of Fangorn, the Ents and Huorns-folk. Saruman was also prone to fits of recklessness with his powers at times. For instance, during an encounter with a band of Melkor's forces in the plains that would later become Isengard, Saruman's dislike for the dark powers of the world caused him to lash out at the orc brigades with a fervor that scared even Gandalf when he had heard of it! When it was all done, there was a great crater in the middle of the plains. Although the battle was won, Gandalf expressed a deep concern for Saruman's temper, and did his best to rein in the wizard (which Gandalf eventually did). In time, Saruman left off his youthful rage at the forces of evil, and sought more clever ways of dealing with them. In fact, he became so brilliant a military strategist, and such a huge diplomat, the other Istari were convinced that Saruman would make a great leader of their legion. It was then that Saruman of Many Colours was transformed into Saruman the White! For a time, Saruman was part of the White Council, on which also served his one-time friend and fellow wizard Gandalf the Gray, Lady Galadriel, Lord Elrond of Rivendell, the elven warrior-prince Glorfindel and Radagast the Brown, another wizard companion of Gandalf's. During one of the council's meetings, Saruman attempted to dissuade the others from taking action against the Dark Lord Sauron (whom Gandalf alleged was hiding out at Dol Guldur under another name, "The Necromancer"). At another meeting, Saruman relented and agreed that he and the others needed to attack Dol Guldur immediately. Behind this was an ulterior motive: Saruman voted for the attack because he did not want Sauron to reclaim his lost Ring. Gandalf, however, had a sneaking suspicion that Saruman wanted the Ring for himself... Saruman accompanied Elrond to Dol Guldur to battle Sauron and his Nazgul, and aid Galadriel in rescuing Gandalf, who had been taken prisoner by the Dark Lord. Eventually, some time after the Battle of the Five Armies, Saruman retreated to his tower fortress Orthanc in Isengard and fortified. Soon after, sadly, Saruman became ensnared by the lure of Sauron's power, and he began to also seek out the One Ring. It was later learned that Saruman, in his quest for power, sought to not only destroy the free peoples of Middle-earth, but also to overthrow Sauron and take rulership for himself! Even with his creation of the "super-soldier" creatures, the Uruk-hai, Saruman's designs were inevitably overthrown following the Battle of Helm's Deep and the Seige of Isengard. Furthermore, one of his servants, the Rohirrim Grima Wormtongue, literally stabbed him in the back and sent the wizard plummeting down from atop Orthanc. One thing to note, though, is that although Saruman from the movies was killed by Wormtongue while both were atop Orthanc, the "book" version of Saruman managed to persuade the Ents in letting him go free once he handed over the keys to the tower. The wizard lived the rest of his days as a Shire criminal lord named "Sharkey." He led a band of rebel hobbits and ruffians in a last ditch effort to take control of the Shire (at least). But Saruman was eventually betrayed and killed by Wormtongue after refusing one final chance of redemption given to him by Frodo Baggins. In the movies, it was Gandalf who offered Saruman redemption.

  • During the later Third Age in an attempt to control Rohan, Saruman bought the allegiance of King Théoden's chief advisor, Gríma Wormtongue, who then counselled the ailing king to do nothing about the steady resurgence of Sauron's armies. Saruman and Wormtongue's treachery would have crippled Rohan's military might, had not Gandalf interfered a year later and revealed to Théoden his right-hand man's true designs, healing the old king and revitalizing his political and military rule. Saruman did not reveal his true intentions until Gandalf presented him with the discovery and location of the One Ring. He then revealed his contact with Sauron and belief that they must join the Dark Lord or fail. Saruman then stood forth as Saruman of Many Colours, and when Gandalf refused to join with him, he held him captive in Isengard. Gandalf later escaped, and so Saruman's treachery became known to the rest of the White Council when Gandalf reported it during the subsequent Council of Elrond. Saruman soon also betrayed his new master Sauron by lying to the Witch-king when he arrived at Isengard. Sauron had sent the Nazgûl searching for Baggins, who had found the One Ring years before, and the Shire, his home. Saruman pretended to know nothing about the Shire, but the Nazgûl later captured one of his Shire spies. Caught now between both sides as a known traitor to both, Saruman put all efforts into obtaining the One Ring for himself. Saruman implemented a strategy of attacking Rohan, endeavouring to kill the King's son Théodred, sending spies to waylay Frodo Baggins on his flight from the Shire, and dispatching raiding parties on likely routes a company of the Ring might take to Gondor. Ironically, one of these parties captured Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck and transported them to in time to mobilize the Ents. Gandalf also suspected Saruman had found (and destroyed) the remains of Isildur, who had worn the Ring before it had been lost. Saruman's Shire network failed to capture Frodo Baggins, Gandalf rallied Rohan to victory, Éomer stopped his only partially successful raiding party, and control of Isengard was lost to the Ents. Aware he was utterly defeated, Saruman briefly considered repenting for his deeds, but at the last moment could not go through with it. He must have still had some hope he could somehow escape, and even that infinitely small chance was better than his certain humiliation at the hands of those he had tried to destroy. Saruman still made a final attempt to woo Théoden and Gandalf to his cause but failed: his staff was broken and he was dismissed from the order of the Istari. It must have been during Gandalf's captivity in Orthanc that Saruman began to build his army of Orcs, Dunlendings, and Uruk-hai, since Gandalf came to an as yet undestroyed Isengard. One can speculate that if matters had developed a little more slowly, his puppet Wormtongue would have gained full control over Rohan, and the Rohirrim would have been enslaved or destroyed. Saruman's plans likely failed because he, like Sauron, was forced to reveal his hand early by Gandalf's subsequent escape, and therefore he had little time to perfect his plans. As Saruman considered himself "unfallen", he honestly believed he had a chance of converting Gandalf to his side, and felt honestly betrayed by Gandalf when he was refused. The failure to capture the Ring at Emyn Arnen further ruined Saruman's plans, as he was revealed as a traitor to Mordor now as well. Left out of the final stages of the War of the Ring, he eventually managed to convince his captors, the Ents, into letting him leave Isengard, proving that the magic of his voice still remained. He then went to the Shire, which his agent Lotho Sackville-Baggins (undisturbed by events elsewhere) had brought under control. Spending his final days as a small-time thug lord in Hobbiton known as Sharkey, he was eventually betrayed and killed by his own servant Wormtongue on November 3, T.A. 3019, when even this operation fell apart after Frodo and Samwise Gamgee returned. Saruman, as a Maia, did not truly die, but his spirit lost its shape (much like Sauron's after the Downfall of Númenor and after his defeat by the Last Alliance). As a discorporated spirit, he should have been called to Mandos, but the tale implies that he was barred from returning. We may speculate that his spirit was left naked, powerless and wandering in Middle-earth (perhaps like Sauron's after the One Ring was destroyed).
