Plagueis tempted Sidious to take control of the galaxy in order to fulfill the promise that the Sith would one day avenge their defeats and destroy the Jedi Order, thus bringing about an era of Sith domination. Sidious worried that Plagueis was aiming to replace him, however, so he killed his master in his sleep. In 22 BBY, Palpatine told the story of Plagueis' murder to Anakin Skywalker in a successful effort to turn the Jedi Knight to the dark side.
