  • Although John Peel wasn't particularly known as a major supporter of Black Sabbath, the DJ gave early radio exposure to the metal pioneers and indeed later claimed he tried to sign the band to the Dandelion label after seeing them and Medicine Head at a gig in Lafayette Club in Wolverhampton. This appears to have taken place on September 4, 1969. "He was a pioneer in his own right. If it wasn't for John Peel, Black Sabbath would never have been played on the radio. He was a good guy."[4]

  • Mumbling baritone Ozzy Osbourne had tried out for the Fifth Baptist Church of London's choir, and was rejected without so much as an explanation. He assumed it was because of his ethnicity and brought his grievances to fellow African-Americans Tony Baloney, Ward Bill William, and Terrance Geezer Butler, all of whom repeatedly asked Ozzy to repeat himself. It was eventually decided that Ozzy would be an excellent singer as his indecipherable singing would distract away from the still-learning musicians Tony, Ward, and Old.

Despite an association with occult and horror themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and apocalyptic prophecies of the horrors of war. Osbourne's heavy drug use led to his dismissal from the band in 1979, after which he began a successful solo career, selling over 100 million albums. He was replaced by former Rainbowvocalist Ronnie James Dio. After a few albums with Dio's vocals and songwriting collaborations, Black Sabbath endured a revolving line-up in the 1980s and 90s that included vocalists Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen and Tony Martin, as well as multiple members of Deep Purple and Rainbow. In 1992, Iommi and Butler rejoined Dio and drummer Vinny Appice to recordDehumanizer. The original line-up reunited with Osbourne in 1997 and released a live album Reunion. In January 2013, Black Sabbath (with Brad Wilk replacing Ward) announced that they are releasing a new album, 13, in June 2013. Black Sabbath are cited as pioneers of heavy metal. The band helped define the genre with releases such as quadruple-platinum Paranoid, released in 1970. They were ranked by MTV as the "Greatest Metal Band" of all time, and placed second in VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list, behind Led Zeppelin. Rolling Stone magazine ranked them among the 100 greatest artists of all time. They have sold over 15 million records in the United States and over 70 million records worldwide. Black Sabbath were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

Eventually the band changed its name to Earth, and then Black Sabbath. Since the band formed, the only constant member has been Iommi. By reshaping the blues-rock which was practiced by bands like Cream, Vanilla Fudge and themselves (while under the name Earth), through a more aggressive instrumental layout and soturnal themes, both in lyrics and arrangements, Black Sabbath is widely considered as the first heavy metal band and, as such, is one of the most influential in its genre. Sabbath has so far provided four tracks all of which are: "Iron Man" to Guitar Hero, "War Pigs" to Guitar Hero II, and "Paranoid" to Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, "Children of the Grave" to Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock three of them from their second album, Paranoid, released in 1970, and one of them from there third album, Masters of Reality. Also a live version of Paranoid on Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock by Ozzy Osbourn and Metallica. Currently, the band tours and is recording as Heaven and Hell, with the formation under which they toured the eponymous 1980 album (see Band members section below).

One only needs to examine the name to discover their true ambitions. They obviously wanted the sabbath-day abolished and replaced with the sabbath-night so they could spend the day-time out promoting their liberal agenda. Luckily, Christianity was spared from this threat when lead singer Ozzy Osbourne got so high he lost the ability to speak. Ozzy Osbourne has become a renowned family man, garnering praise from such heroes as Dan Quayle. While the many have questioned his sentiments of praise for Osbourne who is an admitted drug addict and domestic abuser that once tried to kill his wife, he doesn't hope that every woman in America gets an abortion like Murphy Brown and is therefore safer to leave your child unattended with. Osbourne was also one of the many children left behind during the Lyndon Johnson years, albeit in a different country, and to this day does not write any of the lyrics he sings. Black Sabbath did however, replace the genuinely affable Osbourne with a man by the name of Ronnie James Dio. Dio has not only written lyrics (despite also growing up during the Lyndon Johnson years) that have been anti-religion. Genetically, being that Dio is only about 5'4", he can not possibly have as big of a voice as he claims to have. The most widely regarded theories are that he has a large black man backstage singing for him, or he has somehow arranged a deal with the man he sings about in such high regard: Satan.
Peel first came across Ozzy Osbourne (lead vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass guitar) and Bill Ward (drums) when the Birmingham four-piece were still using the name Earth and he was working as guest DJ when they supported Van Der Graaf Generator at the Bay Hotel in Whitburn, near Sunderland, in March 1969.[1] According to venue manager Geoff Doherty, the band “gave no real indication of how big they were eventually to become.” By September, however, it was a different story. Now writing their own darker material and employing a heavier sound, Sabbath were managed by Peel acquaintance Jim Simpson, who arranged a special gig at the Lafayette Club in Wolverhampton to showcase the band for the DJ, although they eventually signed for Vertigo Records the following month.[2] In November, though, a BBC session for Peel was recorded and broadcast on Top Gear. The following year, on Friday 13 February, Sabbath’s breakthrough first LP was released. Geezer Butler was later to recall that the band heard of the record’s arrival in the UK album charts when listening to Top Gear on the way to a gig. Peel had appeared with the band at Mothers club in Birmingham a week before the album hit the shops and subsequently introduced them (with Medicine Head) on his Sunday concert show on 26 April 1970. The following month, Peel was the compere when Sabbath appeared on the first day of the Hollywood Festival.[3] Sabbath quickly emerged as one of the major bands of the 1970s, both in the UK and US. Further links with Peel appear to have been limited, although the DJ later narrated the band's story as part of the Rock Family Trees TV series and in summer 2002 played several Latin covers of their songs by Estonian medievalists Rondellus. Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne would go on to find solo success and wider fame as a reality TV star, but was quick to pay tribute to Peel’s support in the band’s early career after the DJ died in 2004: "He was a pioneer in his own right. If it wasn't for John Peel, Black Sabbath would never have been played on the radio. He was a good guy."[4]

It was eventually decided that Ozzy would be an excellent singer as his indecipherable singing would distract away from the still-learning musicians Tony, Ward, and Old. In honor of their ethnic background and love of Christ, they took on the name Black "Bloody" Sabbath. They began to write up-beat gospel hymns, and sought out a record deal. Despite moderate popularity playing church ice cream socials (and even one Bar Mitzvah), they could never seem to attract the attention of radio stations or record executives. Their sound eventually transformed into a blend of blues, rock, punk, funk, junk, and a throbbing headache, mainly because of Baloney accidentally chopping off his penis, leading to him tuning down his guitar to negative F-billion so he could strum it with his new "stub" more easily. The new sound didn't impress the gospel promoter who eventually did give the band a listen, and suggested they stick to "something you're good at, like rap or basketball." Not understanding what rap was (having not been invented by Snoop Doggy Dog yet), but understanding the racial slight of the basketball stereotype, Black Sabbath made a choice that would forever change the face of rock music. Blaming their being black on their lack of musical success, they also began blaming God for making them black. The next logical step was to blame God for their lack of musical success. They eventually became "unborn Christians" and devoted their lives, and their music, to Satan.
