Second Battle of Deep Space 9
rdfs:comment
The Second Battle of Deep Space 9 was the opening battle of the Dominion War, in which the combined forces of the Dominion and the Cardassian Union, led by Gul Dukat, launched an assault on the Federation-held starbase Deep Space 9. Although the station was captured by the Dominion, the battle was a strategic victory for the Federation because they successfully mined the Bajoran wormhole, preventing the Dominion from sending reinforcements to join the battle from the Gamma Quadrant. (DS9: "Call to Arms") Also, the Dominion's diversion of forces away from their front lines to attack the station, enabled a Federation-Klingon fleet to destroy vital Dominion shipyards. The Second Battle of Deep Space 9 was the opening battle of the Dominion War. The battle began when Dominion forces attacked the station in an attempt to prevent Starfleet from mining the entrance to the Bajoran wormhole with self-replicating mines, which would prevent further Dominion forces from entering the Alpha Quadrant. Starfleet was ultimately successful in setting the minefield, though the station was lost to the Dominon. The station would be retaken by a combined Federation-Klingon offensive the next year. The Second Battle of Deep Space 9 was a battle which took place between Federation forces and the combined Cardassian/Dominion forces in 2373, and was the opening battle of the Dominion War. Gul Skrain Dukat led the combined Cardassian/Dominion force in the attack against Deep Space 9 and successfully captured the station from Federation control. Although it was a technical Dominion victory, the Federation ultimately succeeded because Captain Benjamin Sisko and his crew were able to mine the entrance to the Bajoran wormhole, and prevented Dominion reinforcements from entering the Alpha Quadrant. (DS9 episode: "Call to Arms") The Second Battle of Deep Space 9 was a bloody attack on DS9 and Bajor in efforts to show the Federation how powerful the Galactonian Fleet was and act as a prelude to invasion.
