Members of the hippy movement also regularly consumed drugs such as LSD. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home) Noted hippy Henry Starling discovered a UFO while camping in the High Sierras in 1967. (DS9: "Past Tense, Part II") In August 1969, the Woodstock festival, the pinnacle of the "hippy movement", was held near New York City. Maury Ginsberg, a tower operator at the concert met his future wife, "the groovy chick with the long red beads", prior to the concert when, after his van broke down, he was picked up in a jeep driven by Quinn. Hippies wore their hair long, and favored faded jeans worn with colorful clothing. Many Hippies were as dirty as revered Mediaeval saints. Many hippies also experimented with alternative living arrangements such as communes, where all work and all possessions were shared. In the movie "Easy Rider" the protagonists visit a hippie commune in California Tom Wolfe's account of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters in his book "The Electric Acid Test" documented one aspect of the hippie scene. Hippies were preceded by the counter-culture Beatnik movement in the 1950's. Conservatives are still easily moved to eye-bulging rage at the mere thought of the Hippy counter-culture, which rejected all they hold dear, and use the term "Hippy" as a pejorative. There is, of course, a certain irony in the fact that the hippies probably lived a more Christian lifestyle than most conservatives, based as it was on peace, love and a disdain for material possessions.

Hippie fashions and values had a major effect of culture, influencing popular music, television, film, literature, and the arts. Since the 1960s, many aspects of hippie culture have been assimilated by the mainstream. The religious and cultural diversity espoused by the hippies has gained widespread acceptance, and Eastern philosophy and spiritual concepts have reached a wide audience. The hippie legacy can be observed in contemporary culture in a myriad of forms—from health food, to music festivals, to contemporary sexual mores, and even to the cyberspace revolution.

Hippies are well known in EarthBound Beginnings for their battle theme which is inspired by Chuck Berry's song Johnny B. Goode. A remixed version of the battle theme can be heard in EarthBound in fights against New Age Retro Hippies and Frank Fly, and can again be heard in the Mother 3 versions of the song called Rock and Roll (Mild) and Rock and Roll (Spicy). Oddly, in very rare cases, an enemy named 'The Hippie' can be encountered in Merrysville, which isn't hippies' usual location, namely Podunk. Their name is The Hippie instead of Hippie, though their stats are identical. This is most likely an error by the game developers, as they are rather weak compared to other enemies in Merrysville.

(TOS: )
